Featured is the game between Viswanathan Anand and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov from the 2019 Tata Steel Masters. The opening is a Caro-Kann Defense, Advance variation with 3…c5. Anand’s decision to exchange his d-pawn provides Mamedyarov with a natural target on e5. Anand’s 11th move influences black’s kingside structure and grants Mamedyarov the bishop pair. With Mamedyarov deviating from the “capture towards the center” principle, Anand must take care of his sensitive f2 square. Mamedyarov, having played the seemingly natural b6, must have been taken by surprise when the Tiger from Madras pounced decisively in response.

8:39 didn't find c4, but I was looking at sacking the rook on d5 without c4. Giving away a rook for 3 pawns lol. Realized it was dumb though.

same. after seeing c4 though, it does make sense as a way of prepping Rd5. maybe I would have spotted it if I thought about ways of prepping the sac. (which I didn't, but something which occurred to me might be a good idea, to consider more in future)

I'm bad at playing with an entombed bishop in any variation, but especially in the CK. Here the bishop is just tragic, it can never move and then when it finally does it basically costs black the game. Harsh.

Something I've heard a lot of chess players say: "x is impossible" or in this video "c4 is not possible". Obviously it's not literally impossible, so it leads me to believe that it translates to "the idea behind c4 doesn't work" or maybe "the plan is impossible to execute if black plays correctly". Is that about right?
@paulgoogol2652
@paulgoogol2652 Год назад
It was explained... c4 was trying to get the pawn off d5. When the black rook could take it, d5 pawn would be kept in place.
@OmneAurumNon

@ghost79ish

@@paulgoogol2652 I know it was explained in this video. But I've heard that phrase many times in the chess community in reference to a bad move or idea, not literally impossible.

Black generates a lot of counterplay with g4, kicking the knight, and then an eventual g3, Qb3, looks very scary for white.
