This video is so dense with really good takes presented in a really accessible way. Thank you so much for making it.

I totally agree. Zoe has an awesome voice to listen to. She projects calmness and authority in the subject (if that's allowed)

Does it follow that I reject all authority? Perish the thought. In the matter of boots, I defer to the authority of the bootmaker; concerning houses, canals, or railroads, I consult the architect or the engineer For such special knowledge I apply to such a "savant." But I allow neither the bootmaker nor the architect nor the "savant" to impose his authority on me. I listen to them freely and with all the respect merited by their intelligence, their character, their knowledge, reserving always my incontestable right of criticism and censure. I do not content myself with consulting a single authority in any special branch; I consult several; I compare their opinions and choose that which seems to me soundest. But I recognize no infallible authority, even m special questions; consequently, whatever respect I may have for the honesty and the sincerity of an individual, I have no absolute faith in any person. Such a faith would be fatal to my reason, to my liberty, and even to the success of my undertakings; it would immediately transform me into a stupid slave, the tool of other people's will and interests. -Mikhail Bakunin

Another reason to value this kind of research, is that often, contributions made by anarchists in different fields are completely ignored (not even mentioned in academia nor media), or at best disassociated from their anarchist influence.

It's actually pretty radical that anarchists historically included the *freedom of personal development* as a core part of their conception of liberty. I feel like this doesn't get talked about enough. We talk a lot about freedom of movement, freedom from landlords, freedom to be fed and safe, etc. But I think we need to talk more about the political goal of a world in which each individual is empowered to develop themselves into the best version of themselves possible. I think this is a really strong motivator for joining a movement. Yes, healthcare is great, having a guaranteed place to safely live is great, but really those things are the bare minimum. What makes being human so exciting to me is our capacity for creativity, ingenuity, and learning. We need human flourishing to be part of the future we are striving towards and inspiring people with.

Thanks for posting this Zoe. You've covered freedom/equality/solidarity in other vids, but I really appreciate the way you consolidate them here as 3 core Anarchist values. I especially valued the Emma Goldman description of freedom as creating the situation in which humans can develop themselves. Speaking of self-determination, I remember watching a video YT video where Cameron of Libertarian Communist Platform (formerly Libertarian Socialist Rants) spoke about Self-determination Theory - I saw this back when I had only recently radicalized myself, and it really helped develop my political ideas and anarchist worldview. Edit: I find it funny that I'm listening to this video while at work where I'm in the middle of sanding hundreds of dugout boxes in a row. At least I'm developing myself by listening to anarchist theory.. I suppose.

I am going to slowly make a diagram of the information you give in this interview because i think it could be a helpful start for me in mapping out anarchism a bit. so far after about 3 hours of work, I managed to do the first 6min ahhahaha its still a big work in progress though, I look forward to finishing it off over the next week :)

I had an idea of getting two anarchists (I dunno, like Bakunin and Tucker) tattooed on each ass cheek like they are debating one another and you talking about the 'fallacy of the famous dead anarchist' makes the idea even more appealing.

@Balaclava Bandit Tucker published one of the first magazines that was promoting Proudhon style anarchist socialism in US. He professing a philosophical individualism does not make him a liberal. It just makes him wrong. Proudhon was the chief theoretician to reference for anarchist and market socialist camps in the first international. He was also a misogynist pig and a windbag, who never was able to be a consistent libertarian in the issues blindspotted him. But his writing and journalism important for radicals back then.

Republican and perfectionist understandings of freedom actually overlapped in the labour movement. Self-development was seen as impossible if someone rented their freedom/will. This was the classical critique of alienation.

A really good video; I was just wondering if you could, perhaps, as you are informed on anarchistic history and thought; make a response to this video by Springtime of Nations; which claims that anarcho-capitalists, not only are anarchists, but are, in fact, the real anarchists; and that anarcho-communists are not anarchists.

What about parties specifically dedicated to abolishing the state once voted in office with a promise of dissolution if they do not continue for that goal?
@space1546
@space1546 Год назад
Historically, those parties get voted in, try to use the state as a means to abolish a bunch of stuff, realize the state doesn't have enough power to do all the things they want, try to build up state power, get invested in the power of the state, and then never actually abolish the state. Even *if* a party that intended to abolish the state actually started to abolish the state, there would just be a military coup and it would be the same situation as before the party, just with a military dictatorship as the opponent instead of a republic.
