If my voice sounds a bit odd, that's because I was a bit sick during recording. Oh well. Additionally, let me save hours of furious AnCap typing and response video editing with the following addendum: Rational self-interest is strictly a "first person limited" thing, i.e. the person decides what is rational based on their own reasoning, perspective and life situation. What might seem a completely bonkers act to outside observers might make perfect sense to the actor. In other words, "rational self-interest" is determined internally by the actor, and not externally by a theoretical "rational observer". However, outside observers can still extrapolate what the actor will do based on their circumstance and past actions.

@@Andy-hi2nm i have an interest in debating a couple of things and ile mainly ask questions (cus im sure most of you dont even understand anything about economy) First point would be: do u think, IF market is privately owned, it is capitalist, and if market is publicly owned it is socialist period. Second point is do u think racism/wokeness whatever u want to call it has anything to do with fucking economy or being left or right? and do u think racists can be socialist Third main point is, if a country is truly socialist by definition (equal pay in exchange for ABILITIES and WORK) then how would immigration from the 3rd world actually work in such a state Final point is if i told u lower africas average IQ was 82 and many countries have close to dull levels of intellect and education, (many are at 70 iq) would u say its racist

@@xyria3230 well, for once my point is that this video and the discussion surrounding is not about wether socialism works or not, neither it is about how or if race relations factor in capitalism and liberal ideology. So it's barely a step above bait to take those strawman points up since the discussion's not about either of those things Edit: like yeah ofc he wouldnt bring up socialism or how racism factors in this simulation because it's not on the scope of the video. Amazon and Google even put an actual listening device in your home that people PAY for! But it's only bad if the government does that right? Because people can just stop paying these companies and they'll go under! Oh no wait, they won't because most of all people are entirely dependent on them either directly or through the multiple other companies and services they buy out to cull any form of alternative to pop up to make it impossible for people to do exactly that! If a government doesn't provide it's services you have to wait till the next election, but if we are comparing things that way, if this model of businesses were to be compared to a government, it'd be equal to a goverment party being able to disband any opposing party so that nobody can vote for them. @Galil the same time though there are examples of nearly all of these tactics being used in the past or currently. Look at most companies nowadays and you see most of them atleast in part. In the past entire company towns were designed like this, try protesting the guy in charge for his mandate on segregation, religious purity, prohibition and the likes when he pays everyones wage with his own special currency so you cant buy outside of the town with your savings, runs your utilities, supplies your grocery story, owns the police, all housing, is himself the local government and organizes all local community events and regulates work hours. The only reason towns like those collapsed was because of outside help, as well as the brutality against workers becoming so great the government had to step in and break most of these systems up.

@@Cacowninja Yes, if drugs were legalized (in both sides of the border) now companies who pay taxes and are regulated would be the ones providing the drugs. Thing is in an anarchocapitalist society that isn't going to happen. A case study you should check out is the state of Michacán in Mexico. Long story short, it doesn't have a government. The cartels fight one another AND the militias the people have formed to defend themselves. The state is nonfunctional and nonexistent and the military has explicit orders not to engage. What makes you believe that in an anarchocapitalist society that wouldn't happen? @@Toddalotapodamus "it's not an ideal starting point because it handwaves the emersion of an ancap society as if how it is achieved is of little consequence." OK, sure. It handwaves that part, but I don't know if that's really important for this case. I think this is talking about where it ends up, but the specific ideology might not really matter when we're just saying what the result will be. If some system unavoidably ends with 90% of the population starving or in death camps within the first five years of the regime, hypothetically, then...would the ideological underpinning of that system really make a difference? Other than recognizing it as something we should put a stop to the second we see it on the horizon, why do we care? "We can discuss if you want." OK. From my perspective, libertarian and ancap type systems have some really critical flaws that lead to power concentration in one way or another. I think that power doesn't naturally self-distribute in an unregulated environment, so you need a system (government with adequate strength) to distribute it. You also, of course, need to engineer that government to be resistant to takeovers, which requires things like voting rights, education, and general awareness of politics and understanding of things like media and propaganda by the general populace. All of this is essentially attempting to maintain order within chaos and will eventually fall in the same way every living organism will eventually die, but we can still aim for more equitable and stable systems over the ones that will collapse into utter chaos or power concentration right away. How do you see these systems?

@@TheMisterGuy I definitely appreciate that you have ideas beyond what the video provided, especially as I find it so wanting. That said, I'd like to address some of that before moving past it. Adam's video posits nearly every claim from a vacuum. We're to make multiple leaps of logic merely to arive at his starting point of this make believe city. In his premise, we're told that society would have it's infrastructure in tact, but that pretty well goes right out the window immediately after being presented. Society seems to be structures in some weird post-civilisation future where populations are such that only one man has the idea to provide better water (an issue that effects everyone) but there is somehow the manpower and wealth to build the infrastructure for his expansion. For some reason, even though these people would have the same education, technology and weaponry as we do today, nobody questions the shadier aspects of Billy Bob's enterprise. Somehow there's no competition Bob has to overcome. And somehow, Bob manages to accomplish something that there is no recorded history of ever being done before: shut down a potential competitor with predatory pricing. And he's somehow able to do this several times. We can move past the video, but do you see why I'd find it lacking? Do you disagree with anything I've said so far?

"AnCapistan 2: Till Kingdom Come" where the civil war breaks out between his children and the fighting impoverishes much of the middle class inside the wall. From this a popular leader from among the people arises and the final living Billy-Bob child assumes the thrown. Then a third to round out the trilogy... where the Blackwater solders are told to fire on women and children approach Billy-Bob's inner wall demanding bread. The security forces fracture under conflicting amoral orders. A commune is formed by the outside farm workers, revolting solders, and now impoverished former middle class from inside the walls. Call it: "AnCapistan 3: Long Live the Commune."

Ancapistan has been tried, in the American "Old West", where the federal government couldn't really reach with any high degree of force. So what was it like? Unsurprisingly, corporations created their own city governments built around whatever resource extraction operation was there, enslaved the population through housing, loans, debt, and private "taxes", and created some of the worst living conditions in all of human history. Thousands upon thousands died in the mines in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no way of escaping, including child slaves. Some people literally went to WAR with the company that owned them, usually unsuccessfully. That is the promise of Ancapistan, or Companytowns as they're more commonly known.

The Icelandic Commonwealth is incredibly interesting. It arguably started out as something more akin to anarcho-communism, being as it was a bunch of self-sufficient familial agricultural communes, before the people with the most wealth and power did what they do best and snatch up more wealth and power, everyone else is too poor to stop them, there are no checks or balances to stop them, it stops looking like a bunch of self sufficient farming communities and starts to look more like a bunch of warlords having territorial scuffles, and at that point the King of Norway is infinitely preferable to the Icelandic Commonwealth. Ancom without checks and balances creates ancap, ancap without checks and balances allows a few small, powerful people with all the wealth and money and power to take over, and at that point it's literally just feudalism: landlords holding all the power.

Even if ancaps get rid of State, there will always be people willing to use violence to form it again. We just keep opposing them just like we did in the first time. Ancaps don't support a revolutionary take down of the State like socialism because that just creates a power vacuum thay will be filled by a tyrant. Instead it is about changing people's culture until this kind of violence becomes rejected by society as a whole. Then the State won't need to exist any more. However, anarcho syndicalism proposes abolition of currency, which I don't think can happen without coercive enforcement. I remember working 24 day shifts in a huge remote oilfield compressor site in Canada for a full year. I stayed in a camp 3 km from the site. The days lasted 12 hours. The atmosphere was stressful and workers were layed off regularly for breaking safety rules. A foreman got fired because the cleaning personnel found an empty beer can in the dustbin in his room. I was just too mentally and physically exhausted to make conscious decisions and I was constantly forgetting things. But time somehow flew by. Some people even stayed at camp during their 4 days off of the month. They jokingly said "Why pay rent!?". I'm convinced that given the choice, some people (who work 2 jobs and can barely afford rent/food/bills) would gladly accept feudalism for the guaranteed shelter, food and savings on top. Both of which were piss poor straw man arguments based on nothing in actual reality, whereas in actual reality Herbert Dow broke the cartel.

The really, really fun thing about AnCap is not the consequences upon being established. People don't understand (Adam doesn't mention it either) that of course there is a good example of AnCap: Prehistory. Between the emergence of the first humans and the founding of the first civilization, we had "perfect" Ancap. Which of course meant tribalism, violence and with that the rapid creation of governments.

I think anarcho-capitalism is just purely unrealisitc: you cant combine huge differnces in property with stateless society. What would hindr people from just not respecting your property? In the best case this would turn out to no property (so we would have a actually good from of anarchy, but no capitalism left) and in the worst case it would create a corporate semi-state which basically does everything a capitalistic state does, but without any democratic claims (so we have no anarchy left). Either way, anarcho-capitalism will (luckily) not persist

Either this fantasy view of human nature that everyone will value everyone else in a dog-eat-dog world without any social safety nets, but no worries because all these generous rich people will shower the wealth on the poors through private charity instead of you know, centralising the wealth more and more to provide for their own families and grow more and more powerful, or they have private security forces protecting their property, but in such a case, they have the force and can just take your property whenever they want because they have the guns and no nebulous principle of no-aggression is going to stop them. And at that point you'll have warring groups of mercenries and warlords fighting with each other for territory, which they'll turn to the public in order to finance these wars at the threat of either incarceration or execution, and holy fuck does this sound familliar. Or private property doesn't exist, because it is inherently a violent concept, and if it doesn't, then the society will become a communist one.

Really good video the only issue I have with it for the anarcho-capitalist model is Billy Bob is the only person really doing anything and so ends up monopolising almost everything under himself. I think a more feasible outcome would be an oligopoly where a handful of ‘great men’ end up controlling different sectors and protect themselves and one another to maintain the status quo, more Russian oligarchs than feudal lord
@nobodyimportant6582
@nobodyimportant6582 2 года назад
Well those other men better be able to make water themselves or they'll likely get theirs cut off The point is in that system, if you control a vital resource, you can absolutely create a huge monopoly and quite easily. Don't take my deal to buy your mine? Good luck when I shut off the water to that area.
