Katsushika Hokusai continued to create art until his death in 1849. In this close-looking video, Dr. Sarah Thompson, Curator of Japanese Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, shares insight about one such work the artist completed in the final year of his life: “Li Bai Admiring a Waterfall.”
This one-of-a-kind scroll humorously depicts a drunk Chinese poet appreciating a magnificent waterfall. An often forgotten detail of this artwork, points out Dr. Thompson, is the inclusion of a small child holding up the drunk poet to ensure he does not fall into the cascading waters. Watch our video now to get an up-close look at this painting and learn why waterfalls appeared in so many of Hokusai’s works. Then, see “Li Bai Admiring a Waterfall” for yourself by visiting “Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence from the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston” before the exhibition closes on Sunday, January 21 at SAM.
