"[Sormin] takes these fragments, pieces, and bits from places and time... and sutures them together into this almost Frankenstein-like amalgamation of memory, feeling, and material that then becomes something strongly provocative and emotive." - Kendall DeBoer, Curatorial Assistant, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Since its creation in the 19th century, countless artists across the globe have drawn inspiration from Katsushika Hokusai's "Under the Wave off Kanagawa," also known as the "Great Wave." Among them is contemporary Canadian artist Linda Sorman.
In this close-looking video, Kendall DeBoer, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, considers the details of Sormin's 2023 sculpture "Boru Sibaso Paet, on the foam of the primordial sea" and explains the reasons why she considers this work to be a necessary addition to "Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence from the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston."
