As we were preparing to open “Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence from the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston” in October, Kendall DeBoer, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, stopped by SAM to talk about a few of the contemporary artworks included in the exhibition.
In this close-looking video, DeBoer offers a detailed explanation of San Francisco-based artist Nancy Genn’s “Opus 7.” An early member of the West Coast’s abstract expressionist movement, Genn attributes her interest in geometric abstraction, water, light, and calligraphic forms to her mother, Ruth Wetmore Thompson Whitehouse. In 1917, Whitehouse purchased a set of the Hokusai Sketchbooks, which she eventually passed down to Genn. These pen and ink sketchbooks greatly influenced the lines and structures of Genn’s paintings.
