Georgia. Anauri fortress.
There is Anauri fortress on the Military-Georgian road, 70 kilometers from Tbilisi.
It rises majestically above the picturesque Zhinvali reservoir. The reservoir is filled with water Aragvi. It provides the work of the Zhinval HPP and feeds the central cities of Georgia. At the end of summer, in early autumn, the water level is very low. Aragvi has become shallow and the Vedzathevi tributary has almost dried up.
This makes it possible to consider the old bridge through the tributary. The military-Georgian road passed along it, until the construction of a modern bridge. Until 1985 the reservoir did not exist. The fortress stood at the confluence of Vedzathevi in Aragvi. It protected the entrance to the Daryal Gorge. Perhaps the first tower was built in the 13th century. Until the 18th century nothing was known about the fortress. In the 18th century the fortress served local feudal lords. Fortress served Tsar Taymuraz II in the wars against the Lezgins. And it served his son Irakli II in the war against the invasion of the Aga-Magomed Khan's troops. At the beginning of the 19th century, the garrison of the Russian troops was in the fortress. Today Ananuri consists of two parts: the citadel and the lower fortress. The lower fortress is badly damaged. A large open space, a picturesque reservoir, a historical dominant - a fortress, an autumn forest on the surrounding mountains, give pleasure to lovers of species.
