My 12 reasons why I recommend Ancestry.com to clients and is my most used website in 2022. Ancestry has NOT sponsored this video - these are my honest opinions. #Ancestry #genealogy #familytree #familyhistory
I build all my family trees for myself and clients on Ancestry. I currently have 5 pages of trees, that's about 125 genealogy trees, and I clear them out twice a year! There are good options out there both for the computer like Rootsmagic and Family Tree Maker as well as online platforms like MyHeritage and Find My Past as well as FamilySearch. These other options are good, but why is Ancestry.com great for me?

I’m a fan of Ancestry as well. Like you, I always like to open up the record and link it from the full screen. I’m really disliking that they have disabled the ability to do that. It’s still buggy, too. I’ve noticed that once a hint is accepted, the change doesn’t show up automatically unless I hit refresh. I find myself skipping directly to Search and looking for the hints there so I can see them full screen.

Ancestry without DNA is limited to finding what you can in census data, issuance of licenses/permits, payment of taxes, services in the military, old family bibles, etc. Most of us do not have a recent relative who is a direct relation to some family name that is famous in history. In fact, searching back down your 'family tree' you might come to the point that your family 'took' the name of the Laird, etc. who owned the land/farm/etc. I do have a famous family name - Cromwell. Oliver Cromwell's father was my great, great's brother. Oliver was born in 1599. The first of the Cromwells left England for America, arriving in 1600. My mother's brother was typical of the Cromwell family tree - tall, thin, dark hair/eyes and premature balding. I've seen one branch of the Cromwell English family tree traced back to northern England in 624AD. Other family tree ancestors brought me back to criss-crossing northern Europe between France- Belgium-Netherlands-Germany back to 256AD. (You almost had to be a King to have your name recorded this long ago, and we weren't.) But, we did come from Normandy, France with William and Mary in 1066 to conquer England. But, Geneology from the genes in your body can teach you so much more! I sent cotton swabs to CRI Genetics for my male hapolog test. It showed each gene change that resulted from a boy child of a marriage who then carried on my genetics to the next intermarriage/gene.

I use both MyHeritage and Ancestry. I find using both I get more information than using only one. Ancestry often does not have data on things I would expect it to. Better on MyHeritage. On the other hand ….

WITHOUT ANCESTRY my family on both sides can go back over 350 years. For some reason they kept excellent records. My mother was the unofficial keeper of family records on both sides. I computerized everything including photo's that go back before 1900. I'm leaving it all to my nieces, nephews and anyone else in my family since my wife and I never had any children.

Ancestry NEEDS to add basic DUPLICATE CHECKING when adding people
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee Год назад
You can see duplicates by going to "Tree Overview" and then "People" understand the "Summary" on the right. That will give you an alphabetical list of people in your tree.

Hi Aimee! So weird to realize we're related! It really is a small world! Our family trees probably don't connect but since we all came from Adam and Eve, somewhere in the past our families must have connected! lol lol ha ha ha! Just teasing. Really, I'm just now researching how to research my family history and saw your video. It was very interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing! This is the greatest thing about the internet that I can think of. Connecting with family and friends lost by geographical changes, etc. Anyway, aloha and good day, cuz 😉!!!

I do 70% of my work on Ancestry. I especially like the description box for the facts. I make sure I have at least 1 Fact for each Source & at least 1 Source for each Fact. I transcribe every bit of information in the image of each source into the description box. If there isn't enough space I create a 2nd Fact. For example, when doing a census, often there is too much for the Head of Household, so I create an Occupation fact and add job, industry, earnings, unemployment, etc there. It makes me slow down & see everything in the record.
@AncestryAimee

I hadn’t thought of adding occupation facts and such. Interesting! I like it! So great to source your facts! Thanks for sharing.

If one is playing the "guess the daddy" game, like I am and im sure many others are as well - its incredibly frustrating that women are not required to list their maiden name. It dilutes an otherwise good idea. Also, ive reached out to several - no one has written me back. I suppose ill just stay someones dirty little secret

It's also good to test in other databases. I have different matches in Ancestry vs 23andMe. And like Aimee mentioned new matches can pop up at anytime. But like you, I've had a lot of people not respond.

@AncestryAimee Год назад
Yeah. It takes some getting used to.
@novelist99
@novelist99 Год назад
I find it very helpful and information comes up fast, but it's frustrating as well. Sometimes it will add an extra box or two on the tree for parents. A few times it has duplicated sections on the tree and put them where they don't belong. I also hate how every time I add a parent, I have to load up the whole tree again to see it, which is time consuming. I also think the price is ridiculous!
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee Год назад
It is expensive. I’m not sure about you mean about adding parents and duplicating sections. Maybe you’re adding someone already in the tree so you are seeing their ancestors? Not sure. But you’re right it isn’t perfect.

Video Request: can you do a video on going past the 1800s? I can confirm up until my 5th great grandfather in one of my lines using what’s on ancestry. For my 6th great grandfather in that line, lots of people have the same person for him, but there is no evidence. It seems he does have a will in Kentucky, but my 5th great grandfather is not named in it. Is DNA my only option? This kind of video would help lots of people go back further.

Why does it cost so much which it's ran by volunteers and the Mormons are so rich? Irritating to say the least.

Ancestry is not owned by the Mormons. It’s a private company. I believe it’s founders were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (aka Mormons) but they sold it long ago. FamilySearch is owned by the Mormons and it’s free.
