Who isn't always looking for good free websites when researching their ancestry? These sites are those I use the most in genealogy research and the majority are FREE! Instagram: ancestrybyaimee Facebook: @aimeecross2
If you want to build your family tree you need to know where to find information. These 25+ websites are my most frequently used websites (other than county-specific websites) as a professional researcher. Most are free, but some do cost. Here I'll explain why those which do have a cost may be worth the money and also provide some alternatives that are at no cost to you. This video quickly discusses these fantastic genealogy websites. Hope they help you in your family history research!

In family search a lot of the records have the key symbol which indicates that one needs to go to an FHC or affliliate to view the record. But a lot of the time a record with the key symbol will actually open up for you anyway. Always click on it just in case it does open for you remotely from home.

This is a great video. Never ceases to amaze me thatthere's always something new to find in my searches. Worth mentioning that the image search is cool at FS. Having no index is tough but my strategy is twofold. Look at records with the least amount of images first. Too many scans at once is never a good idea, unless you're a speed reader. Then check the side notes. It saves time. I've had good results as i found an interment record for my great great grandma.

If you go to a family search library, they have a partner access to Ancestry, MyHeritage and several other normally paid for sites. I have a free tree on Ancestry and have limited access on records. So I am building my tree between Ancestry, familysearch and MyHerotage. Then, I can always go back later and upgrade to a paid subscription.

@@hrh597788 every time I move, one of the first things I do is hunt out my local FHC. Lol. Most decent sized areas have one within a good distance. They want to make it available to all their members, which makes it accessible for all the rest of us. 💙 They have Fold3, as well. Seems my local county library has stopped their subscription to Fold3 and My Heritage, which makes me rely even more on the FHC. However, I HAVE taken advantage this year of the 40% off Ancestry discount... and I am SOOOO glad I did! It has actually helped me tremendously this past month. I got it from the Memorial Day sale... it's being offered again already for Father's Day.

@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee Год назад
Around the turn of the 19th century county, history’s and biographies were really popular. A publisher would go into a community and ask if you wanted to be included in the book. And so people would submit information about their family. We tend to paint ourselves in a positive light so it’s not always completely correct, but it can be a great start when you’re lacking any other information. The county history can also provide a wealth of information about what was happening in that community during the time your family live there.

I do have a question. I have a grandmother who was placed in a Kansas insane asylum and kept there for 12 years. This happened because she assaulted a Kansas city police officer with a knife in hand. I have been trying to get information on her attacking the officer and her being put and kept in the mental hospital. Her children where dispersed to other family members and the husband left her alone with the kids. Anyone who may of had any information are now all deceased. Can you name any resources for possibly obtaining an old police report or court records and maybe some way finding old medical records. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I truly loved this video and will be watching the others on your site. You make things easy to understand. You're awesome.
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee 2 года назад
Contact the county court - depending on the year and county/state, they may have the records at an archives, but they will tell you. You might also reach out to the police department or a local historical society for information on the police records, if they exist. Medical records are tough, in most states, even if its been over 100 years they won't approve the release. Sometimes if you can prove you are a descendant with birth certificates and marriage records they will allow it. Or you can get a court order.

If you cannot find the actual records - contact your state or county library research department. Librarians will know where to look.

I live in Puerto Rico and I have a hard time finding family members because the way they write. The census doesn't help when everyone is put from Puerto Rico and not even from what town their from. I am about to give up searching for my 6th grandparents Joseph da Fonseca Lopez from Portugal and wife Antonia Ramos, unknown to any information of her. I call this Enigma.

its been my experience that about half the family trees on Ancestry are incorrect. They do not have source citations and much is pure speculation. The records collections however are the best available anywhere. Always verify and do not accept posted family trees as fact.

It is frustrating. It helps to realize that it is not done with malice usually just ignorance. Some people actually think their relative is the only Jack Jones born in the year of your relative who you have added detailed sources to, do not despair. Just keep a separate tree like Aimee suggests. I have been chastised a few times when I thought I had been helpful adding to my Swiss relatives, only to be told not to touch these records because they had been verified officially. So I don't even look at them now.

Good question. Usually you find it in the social security applications and claims database or the social security death index.
