My mother took the test, so all my matches to my mother say "Mother's Side". Meaning even though my father has passed, I know exactly which side all the cousins match on. Yet, I get Thru Lines suggesting my father's side for someone literally matching my mother in their own database. You can't exhibit the problem with Thru Lines any better than this.

Great video. I love thru-lines. Some cautions. As you said, DNA doesn’t lie - people do and they make mistakes...and they copy trees....many of which were copied from the same tree with the same mistake. (Don’t just copy other people’s trees - or at least verify.). Ex: I make a mistake. 10 distant cousins copy my tree. We all line up at the common ancestor from my mistaken tree. We all link up...at the wrong person or couple who are not actually our ancestor. How can we tell and use thru-lines to discover mistakes? Go to the next level. The common ancestors parents. Do we all line up with the parents other known children? If not and they had many kids - likely error in the ancestor or the assumed parents. This is especially true when several people lived in same area with same name. Here’s another very similar. Other cousins linking our ancestor to wrong parent and thru-lines gives the suggestion. But hmmm doesn’t make sense. But geez, I have DNA matches from several kids of that suggestion. Must be correct? No! Don’t assume it’s correct! It could be that you simply link to those distant cousins through a completely different line. These are real examples from me. I had an ancestor who was born in Va but lived most of his life in TN and died there. A person combined him with a man of same name and age to a man that died in VA, and it was copied over and over. Theu-lines suggests the parents. Coincidentally, I have many DNA connections with those parents other children. Geez. Must be right? No! When I study all those cousins from the other children, none of them match that line. They are coming from another line which I confirmed. Be careful and verify. Don’t assume.

Yes,yes,yes. I have a couple of these but the most egregious involves my 2ggrandp. The trick is that we don’t know who either of their sets of parents are. No one prefers to believe that, so the incorrect parentage lingers, despite my having shared death records that dispute the claim. I wanted to take them off my Thrulines, then remembered you saying “it’s not your tree.” So I moved on and just ignored them. Thanks for this session, Connie!

Yes. I have one relative who is extensively into Genealogy, so one would assume that she has done her homework. Sure, my DNA matches everyone in our immediate families (we are 2nd cousins), but anything past our great grandmother only connects via Thrulines.

I have cousins who match DNA wise as closer cousins to me on my dad’s side than they actually are because the grandson of his paternal great grandmother’s brother married his mother’s (my grandmother’s) sister. Due to the variances of DNA distribution the brothers (3 of the 7 kids have done the test with Ancestry) show differently related to me in DNA matches (one shows as a probable 1st cousin the other two as probable 2nd cousins). If I didn’t already know how they were related to me before without ThruLines I might plop the brothers as being uncle and nephews instead due to the different implied relationships.

I liked the DNA circles better . At least they used common DNA to match you and not questionable trees . Your thrulunes matches are your cousins but not necessarily thru the thrulines common ancestor . I have potential ancestors on thrulines that I know 100% do not even exist , because I added them to my tree early in my research . Later I deleted them from my tree but since other people copied my tree input they are still in my thrulines 3 years later

I call them Untrue Lines. If I used only Thrulines I would have an extremely erroneous family on the far back lines. If everyone had the same erroneous info in their trees it taints the Thrulines. It's ok for the more recent relatives but beware after that.

Fair enough. Keep in mind that everyone's experience with Thrulines is going to be different. You likely have DNA cousins with errors in their trees throwing off your view of ThruLines. Again, it's just a hint feature. Use it for clues and decide which clues are valuable to your research.

Thrulines are only as accurate as what others have--or have not--added in their trees. There is one of my father's lines that had absolutely incorrect information added to it that has since been debunked by Y-DNA tests yet people are loath to remove incorrect information without being able to replace it with something else. I HAVE had o-n-e useful hint that led me to a 3rd great-grandmother's parents/siblings and that was delightful!!!

Love yr channel. Your so clear and explain slowly 🙂 thank you. What interests me is say 8cm sharing on thru lines. If thru lines is just suggestions based on peoples trees on Ancestry then how accurate is their shared 8cm on thru lines.??

8 cM is the bottom threshold. I usually don’t use anything less than 20 cM unless I have to. As long as you have enough cousin matches, I would not worry about cousin matches at 8 cM. Focus on the cousin match list more than ThruLines.

She stated that there were only descendants of two of the eight children who have had their DNA tested and that is not always correct. She only shares DNA with descendants of two of the eight children. It is possible that there are descendants of some of the other children, but she does not share DNA with them. It is unlikely as close as that ancestor was in her video, but as you get deeper into your ancestry it is much more likely to happen. It is a real good video and shows all of the new screens. She did a great job of explaining how ThruLines can work for you.

Thank you Dennis. In part you are correct, that Thrulines is only showing the cousins that I share DNA with... but in this case the cousins 1st and 1C1R are close enough that it would be very unlikely that a cousin would not show. Maybe if there were half cousins etc. but it would be a stretch that they would not show. Had this example been further back in time, then yes... it is possible.

I just today watched your video on the ThruLines. I have been using ThruLines to some success, but recently ran into some confusing information that has shown up. So I needed a refresher and watched the video. I have a question about how you moved from the DNA Match with a common ancestor directly (it seems) to the ThruLine graphic? I realize that your video was aired in May, and now it is December. Did Ancestry change the way you move to that graphic or am I missing something? When I click on the Common Ancestor tag, all i get is the DNA match information with that person. If I want to see how they fit in with Through Lines I have to actually open the ThruLines and go to the Ancestor I think that person and I are in Common with and then look at it. I like the way it appears in your video, what am I doing wrong? thanks John

Hi John. I've read your note several times and I'm still not clear on you question. I think I know what you're asking. If you are in the DNA Match screen where you are matched with one person (says so at the top of the screen with you and the other person circles on top), the left column says Common Ancestors (if you have a common ancestor with that person), and the cousin matches mini tree on the right... if you click on the Common Ancestry "View Relationship" on the left side column, it will take you to the Thrulines screen. I found a place at about 17:35 in the video I clicked on Common Ancestor and it goes directly to the Thrulines screen... What you don't see. is I think I edited out the step described above in the interest of time. Either that or they have changed the way it works now. If that is what you are asking, I understand your confusion.

Thank you for an excellent video. Just a comment on the way Ancestry is showing the ThruLines - wouldn't it be more accurate to show the ancestral couple of Herman Madsen/Franciska Jensen as the link, rather than Herman and Franciska as individual suggestions? As Herman and Franciska as the most recent common ancestor, the DNA could be a combination of Herman and Franciska's DNA. Does that make sense or am I getting confused?

Interesting point. But I’m Frances’ case she was the only child when her mother died and the her father remarried and had a bunch of kids. So the ThruLine for the next generation back would be different for Frances half siblings.

What I was trying to say is that Frances and Herman are the most recent common ancestral couple for you and your cousin. So rather than show Frances and Herman as individual truline suggestions, the DNA you and your cousin share could have come from a combination of their DNA or just from either Frances or Herman. The fact that Frances' father remarried does not change the DNA you and your cousin received. Sorry, I am not trying to be pedantic, I enjoy all your videos and have learnt a lot from them. However, I am new to DNA and I am just trying to get my head around it all. I don't understand your comment about the next generation back. Why would that have any impact on the DNA you and your cousin share? My apologies for the long winded comment.

Does Ancestry associate your matching segments with the common ancestor found between your trees? Or does Ancestry stop at simply determining that you and the tree match have some sort of DNA match? For close cousins examined in this case study, there is little question about how you are related. When looking at 5th and 6th cousins you could have a suspected tree link, but a DNA link with an entirely different person. Or does Ancestry include some assessment of the specific DNA segments (which we cannot see because Ancestry does not provide a chromosome browser)?

Greg... that is a really good question. I will ask Ancestry. Here's what I know. They combine the member family trees with the predicted DNA (cM) to estimate the Thrulines. In some cases, they show more than one possibility or Thruline. If you go to the cousin matches and click on a specific match you can get more detailed DNA information. For example, here is what I pulled off of the page where I'm matched with a first cousin. 11% shared DNA | 737 cM across 29 segments Unweighted shared DNA: 737 cM Longest segment: 56 cM So you can see they are looking at the number of segments and the longest segment. If that has a factor in how they put Thrulines together or not, I don't know. I'll see if I can find out. Good question!

Your channel is very informative, Ive been researching my family history for 35 years and there is always something to learn and new avenues to search. I have watched your video and still have a question. WHat do we do with this part of DNA true lines. This is where I get lost. I go to the DNA tab then to TruuLines. When I scroll down a box shows up for a potential Paternal great grandfather. The text there says, You are currently the only tested descendant connection to this TrueLine. It suggest I evaluate relationship paths. I contacted a person relating to the tree of that tree and we could not make a connection based on what that person knows. Can you help me understand this. TY

This is challenging b/c I can't see exactly what you are talking about. Remember that Thrulines is only hinting at what the possible relationships are. They do this by what other trees suggest and by the network of DNA they are seeing. It is only a suggestion. This is where traditional genealogy research comes in, to find the paper trail that either matches or doesn't match what Thrulines is suggesting. If it is correct, then you could add that relative from Thrulines. Click the Evaluate button on the potential ancestors to see what records or member trees they are suggesting you review. Hi Connie, One more "ThruLines" question... My direct great grandfather or his brother had a son out of wedlock and has been discovered exclusively by DNA matches. That’s exciting! However, when I look at 'thrulines,' Michael W. Hearn - the illegit son, has 4 dna descendant matches with me through Kendal B., my gr. grandfather, at 15-25cM. However, if I check 1 generation further back, then over to my gr. grandfather's brother, James R. I find 1 dna descendant match with the same Michael W. Hearn, but at 115cM... a much stronger match! However, the other 4 matches at 15-25cM, which is through my gr. gr. grandfather do not show up in this match! I’m curious, if they are related to me through my gr. grandfather, wouldn’t they also be related through his brother, but possibly at a strong cM number? Since the cM is higher through my gr. grandfather’s brother, I would guess he’s the father instead of my gr. grandfather!?! Any thoughts?

Briefly... possibly. To be sure you would need to research all persons in the Thruline (plus FAN club) for both scenarios to ensure there are not half relationships that would skew the results... or cousins marrying cousins. Hello Constance. I enjoy your videos and they are very informative. I didn’t see an email address listed, so here is my question. I have 10 great-great uncles/aunts who have the same parents. Why would 6 of them (and their descendants) be listed as “half” relatives? I only see the term “half” when using through lines. Note - I had to correct their relationship earlier yesterday because they had the incorrect mother listed. Does it take time for through lines to update?

Hi Joel. If you're seeing half siblings, then it's likely that those 6 have one different parent. Either 6 of them share the same mother, or father... and the other 4 share the same mother or father. Study the death and marriage dates of the parents. Are there children born before they married? Alternatively, she could have had an affair and had children by an unknown/secret father. Don't rely on Thrulines to give you the answer. You'll need to investigate the reality. Create one timeline with every person in that clan and see what you learn.

All 10 siblings have the same parents listed within ancestry.com . Maybe the parental information right, maybe it's not but how would ancestry.com know that?

Facinating. Such a clear explanation of Thrulines. Thanks Connie. I'm adopted and am still waiting for feedback from my freedom of information request which has been delayed due to Covid-19. I have been corresponding with a first cousin I was linked to through DNA, whose mother, (my Aunt?) has no idea about me. She has a brother and a sister, (one of whom might be my parent), but as my 'Aunt' emigrated from Ireland to America when she was 20 leaving her younger siblings behind, she has no idea if they had a 'secret child' (ie me), so I have to wait until my freedom of information comes through and hope there is a name or some details there to confirm or deny the connection with this 'Aunt' with whom I share 1,750 Cm. Luckily I am not desperately seeking my birth family, as I had a great upbringing. I am mildly curious but am realistic and realise I may well still be a 'secret' and may never find out who my birth parents are.

My thrulines doesn’t seem to be working. Not many of my matches have our common ancestor in their tree, so could this be the reason? I am being told by thrulines that I have a connection with an ancestor I have in my tree, and it shows me a straight line down to me.

It might be that you’re the only person working on that line and have a DNA test with Ancestry. You would need two things for a ThruLine like I showed... one is another Cousin who has tested with Ancestry AND they would have to have the same ancestor in their tree for you to see a ThruLine.

I have a question concerning ThruLines, some of the grandparents on my daughter's tree is not included as a Thru Line. It's basically one line of my mother's father's side of the tree. None of the grandparents from that line is listed at all.

ThruLines is built on the backs of other member trees collectively. You will see a lot of differences from one DNA kit to another... and over time. Use only for hints, not as a fact.

If a person shows up on thurlines are you automatically related by DNA ? If you put a person you think is your parent in your tree, will thrulines automatically put them as a parent or only if they are your DNA parent. Thankyou

The genetic connection (cM) is real but how you connect is only as good as the man made trees. So if your tree is guessing at the parent then the ThruLine may not be correct.

I would not put him in guessing where it goes. It's fruitless in my opinion. In short, a true 2nd cousin means that your son and this one 2nd cousin share great grandparents in common. So looking at the 2nd cousin, what great grandparents do they have and research their tree. Do the same with all second cousins. You'll start to build a web/tree that overlap. It might be that descendants of that person have not tested... or... they haven't yet discovered your ancestor in their own tree. You might be the first one.

That is a complicated answer. I'd work the paper trail first... and the DNA match list to search their trees for clues. Remember ThruLines is just a hint feature.

I have not found this to be the case. My ThruLines are based on someone else's data that is not correct for my family. My ThruLines has 0 (zero) DNA connections to the person who is supposed to be my 3rd, 4th or 5th great grandparent according to ThruLines. Don’t rely on Thrulines to match your traditional tree. It is a hint feature, showing possible relationships. It’s built on the backs of other peoples trees in combination with DNA. If somebody else’s tree is wrong then TruLines could be wrong. Focus on the records and build the DNA connections yourself based on traditional genealogy. Overtime TruLines may correct itself when you do.

Make sure you verify the connections with documents. It might be someone else has it wrong in their tree, thus it might be showing you a false connection.

My thru lines is exact through GG, however, beyond that, it is hard to verify. It shows English ancestry, which I was unaware of. How reliable is this? I have taken the DNA test, and have traced many, many ancestors. Thanks.

Eileen. Think if ThruLines as hints to records or other trees. You need to evaluate the evidence. ThruLines is built on other member trees, so it is only as good as those trees. While it is not expected to be accurate, it is a great place to find clues as to where to look. You'll need to verify the links just like you would verifying a record to see if is correct.

Both of my grandmothers had 13 brothers and sisters even on my dads side I have a grandfather 5 generations back that had 17 children between two sisters that all lived to adulthood . There was a book on the family originally done in the 60s he called everyone up asking who their cousins were who their brothers and sisters were. The Book is titled Moak and Related Families of South Carolina you can type it in at Google and it's free to view. They are in fact redoing that book were members of the Moak lineage are submitting information. We are over 200 followers currently. But I like to check random names I see because we are so scattered in alot of ways. In my line though I'm twice related to alot of them as one of my ancestors 17 children had a son who had an additional 20 children with 4 wives of one of the 20 children he had he had a daughter that wound up marrying one of her my 5 great grandfather whom was one of the 17 children (Uncle and Niece) on my grandmother (The nieces side) her mother had 2 sisters that were married to two of the other 17 children. Twice relations are very common in my line and get confusing the more I go deeper

When would a Thruline-person's ancestors 𝘯𝘰𝘵 have the blue Thruline icon? If a person is a member of a Thruline, aren't all his/her ancestors also automatically part of the Thruline?

That's a great question. There might be a couple of possibilities... one is a half relationship... so the person without the icon might not be genetically connected but married into the line? Another thought is that since Thrulines is built from other member trees... there may be errors in the other trees. That's a good question... I don't know for sure.

I'm good with this explanation; however, I need information about the EVALUATE listings in Green-- People are "matching" my well researched ancestor with a very very common name--and then this attributes the tree that puts my ancestor wrongly in their tree--- so it is asking to EVALUATE-- this I get... but I can find no way to say NO this person is NOT linked to my tree because this source data, that source data, etc --my only way to be in touch, that I am aware of, is to message the person who wrongly put my ancestor in their tree---- How do I stop this from continuing because people in OTHER trees will add my ancestor wrongly to their tree.... I hope this makes sense. I can get no help when I call Ancestry on this

What does it mean when some Thru!ines have a dotted border instead of a solid border? Are these just suggested connections? I have quite a few like this on my maternal side, but I can’t find them in my tree so don’t know if they are actually connected with me by DNA.

Dotted lines mean they are not in your tree. You can click the evaluate button and a side panel will pop up. Review the records (if there are any suggested from other trees). If it looks like the records support the connection, then import them into your tree. Good question. I may do a video about this.

@@GenealogyTV Feedback and one suggestion. My ThruLines is full of potential distant ancestors “suggestions.” Difficult to ignore those bright green boxes with distracting dotted borders. However, they never go away. There should be a way of turning them off like one can ignore/dismiss regular hints? I examined everyone, as you do, and quickly discovered they are all bogus. The suggestions are incorrect people in the trees of my DNA matches. The errors are obvious to me as I live in country of our common ancestors, Ireland. You know, just because you are born in a stable doesn’t make you a horse ; )

Well... Thrulines is just a hint feature. So if you treat it like a record that does not match then I would just ignore it. You could research it thoroughly to make sure that you are not wrong.... Write a proof argument, add it to your online tree, then reach out to the others and suggest they take a look at your evidence and conclusions. If they don't respond, let it go and move on with happier research. :)

What I don't understand is that I have a Thru Lines connection with an incomplete tree. I could only take that particular line back to the Grandfather, and without knowing, I probably shouldn't have put a surname at all, as he was apparently adopted. (No adoption papers, but the records do dovetail, so I would say he was definitely adopted, by the married sister.) Thru lines have given two unknown ancestors before linking with a definite common ancestor with a 4th - 6th cousin 43 cM 1 segment. This is linked to Tom Bowling the donor's Father, yet Tom has been missed out in our tree! So it's back to the drawing board. I am about to make my own Thru-lines tree with 3 more cousins with the same ancestor. I will allow for 43 cMs not being that close. Even more, I have the Y DNA results which suggest we are Bowlings by adoption and surname. Amazingly, myself and another researcher had already suggested surrogacy as the sister who married a Bowling had no children after 8 years of marriage. However, who she married is a mystery, and I had theorised that he was a bigamist. The character whom I am accusing of bigamy shares the same common ancestor on Thru Lines.

What happens when ThruLines predictions are wrong. I have a case on Mom’s side and another case on Dad’s side of the family. All because someone puts wrong information in their tree, and it gets copied all over the place, even by people that don’t have any connection to my tree.

Yes... well there is nothing you can really do. Try to treat ThruLines like a hint feature... Just like any other record like a marriage record that is not the right record for your family, then you ignore it. Same goes for ThruLines... it's just hinting, based on others trees (right or wrong). Over time, it my correct itself when enough people have corrected their trees. Ancestry is aware that ThruLines can be incorrect at times. I asked them in a meeting, if they could somehow allow us to ignore incorrect information in ThruLines. They basically said, that's a good idea... but they don't know they can do it. It's a very complicated algorithm to make work for everyone.

How long have DNA tests been available to the general public ? Surely these cannot suggest ancestors who haven't been DNA tested and only one or two generation of recent family would be highlighted. Secondly if I don't get DNA tested in Ancestry are my searches for my family pointless.. or at best restricted.

DNA at Ancestry has been around since 2012... so not that long. I recommend testing at Ancestry first because they have more to match to (20 million DNA test takers) than any other. You can always transfer the DNA to another site later.

Thrulines assumed that I am a descendant of Jesse Chisholm or at least his wife. There’s a lot of coincidences that can prove it’s case. But even then I’m still doubtful.

You know wish they use thurlines on each tree would be more helpful. Thurlines work I used it on my tree with three generations of Adopted or Adophage children. Now it is link up to my DNA cousins on that side. But my BF side is to hard for anyone. Even I get confused by that side.
