Love this. I have a mac and you can use shift+command+4 and it lets you drag the cross-hairs to whatever place and size to copy and it saves to your desktop. Also shift+command+3 copies the entire page to your desktop. love it!! thanks for the great tips.
One nice thing about printing to PDF is that the text is searchable. So, if you have a folder where all your genealogy stuff lives you can use the system find tools to find every document that contains a certain name. FWIW, screenshot tools and print to PDF are built in to the MacOS: Shift-Cmd-4 for screenshot and "Print to PDF" is an option in the Print Dialog.
I use Mac and I have used print in PDF form for years and don't need to use Cutepdf it is part of the basic print screen and Mac has a utility called Cut in the older version and in the newest software update it is called Screen print where you just crop like snipit that you have for windows.
I do print to PDF and use the snipping tool. I also have the option to print to my Google drive. Thus saved to my hard drive and the cloud. Thank you for you videos. I learn something every time. I will check out the PDF program mentioned here.
I use tools very similar and have also used them for years. Only thing I wished was that message in Ancestry allowed images. I have to get person’s email to send these kinds of captures.
Hi Larry. I just went to Ancestry to print a Family Group Sheet, and as you suggested I went to settings to turn off hints so that they would not show up on the Family Group Sheet. This did not work. They still appear on the tree and on the Family Group Sheet. I don't know why the change isn't taking. Perhaps when hints are turned off, it doesn't mean the same thing to me and Ancestry?
just checked it, your right, it now shows :) and remains showing even with hints turned off (it only turns hints off for tree now, which thisis group sheet from a tree, you would think that ifyou turn off hints, it wouldnt show hint right? LOL I dont know if ancestry reads comments on older videos but if you do, please fix :) group sheets is a drop down option from trees, the tree hint settings should apply here :)
i have never used cute pdf before and i am not sure what jpeg is however isnt this that you are ahowing a security issue because everyone can see a death date and names of your family. although i would love to find my real father and my kids that i was forced to give up.. one daughter and 3 sons i miscarried one child on christmas day and hemoraged and i have 2 more children other than the four that i listed above.
Jpeg is a picture format. those with a death date probably not worried about someone taking their things :) as for family, if someone wants to investigate mine well enough to do fraud, hey, come on board and get paid for that :) I could use that information too! :0( Seriously though the important things i have people have attempted before, most in jail now :) none succeeded. plus, if there is nothing valuable in the box, most dont want to risk it for pennies LOL :)
So many things that could be, i dont think i can help with this one, but if printer connected to the computer, check the cable between them, then make sure that printer is the default for the device, when u bring up the print check to see if the default is the same printer, if wireless check blue tooth connection, most common printer issue is power, then cable, then default printer, then printer out of ink/toner, if wireless then connectivity to same wifi network (many houses have a primary and guest, make sure didnt flip to a different one, after that your getting into network and LAN debugging, as therea re literaly hundreds of things it could be, hopefully these will help "(but likely youve tried them)
In Linux, it is merely a matter of selecting "Print to file" instead of selecting the printer and naming the file with the file type at the end of name e.g. ".pdf". The equivalent of snip is "PRTSC". It maybe necessary to have preciously installed the screen capture or print screen program but that is usually quite easily done with the install tools in Linux.
Thank you so much. I used the snipping tool with an old laptop using Windows 7, years ago. When I purchased my current laptop, I didn't know it came with Windows. I sure missed using that tool. I'm very, very computer illiterate. I am looking forward to using CutePDF. I hope it works for me, I get very frustrated with computers, and give up easily.
Another gem for me. I've been looking for a good free pdf program for a long time, so cheers for that, Larry. As for snipping I've been using that for several years, it went down very well at the university I used to work at when I showed several departments how to use it.
Why does it lists my minor children as husband or wife and Im listed as husband or wifes parent. On myself it lists me as wife. But without a husband. Its very frustrating.
In an utterly bizarre coincidence, I was working on much the same today! I’m still trying to get an export of certain data to excel. I did know about these two, but that’s only from doing tech support for many years. These tips are super valuable - always. You would be surprised at how many need this. I would if I had not been in that field. What I have found to be fun today was to send it to OneNote. Then I can organize it there in folders for the person or family group, etc. Another thing I did was hit Print from the facts screen and the story screen just to see the information in various ways. And on the Source column, I did a highlight down that row, copy and pasted into Excel so I can start keeping a record of what I’m missing in my research of a particular person. Anyway, fun stuff for all us family archivist nerds. 😂
Thanks for this and all of your very detailed vids on Ancestry tools. I like the family groups sheet option but if an ancestor is married more than once, the group sheet only displays one spouse or ex spouse at a time. How do you export and organize your family groups in excel? I’m having trouble keeping up with who’s who and when etc. for instance- I have some 4th cousins who I know are related to me in my Father’s side but it’s hard to find the common ancestor in our trees for two reasons: Missing data on African Americans during slavery and no way to truly flip back and forth to find that missing link. What do you suggest?
I use Family Tree Maker ( MacKiev.com) It makes it easy to keep track of multiple marriage, lineages, adoptions, etc. It integrates with Ancestry too for easier searching and also with familysearch.org so you get quick and easy hints in both sites. Plus it syncronizes with Ancestry to keep it consistant For the 4th cousin question - have you color coded the DNA matches yet (video on it)? The comparison should show all who are related to both and give you information on that lineage of matches. From that, while you may not know where/how they link to you just yet, you can begin estimating at what point in your tree you "expect" the MRCA to be at (with a STRONG percentage of accuracy with a probability within a node either way) That doesnt sound helpful when trying to build a tree, but it actually is for difficult trees. You know that 3400 is parent/child. 1700 is a node father away and you divide that by two each node of separation (see centimorgan video for better explanation). Important thing to note is that when your matching someone, you go up to the common ancestor then back down their line like a step stool with steps on both sides to get to the top step which is the MRCA. each step dividing. So knowing the CMS you know if they match you at which point and in which line (mother/father and then grandparent lines, then great grandparent lines). Any secondary marriages or births by different fathers/mothers makes line delineation much easier and precise. You wont be able to match names to the nodes yet but youll be able to begin matching people to great grandparents, 2x ggp, 3xggp etc and on lines to cluster them. Then any information they have will accelerate your tree. As for African heritage for Americans I do have some things that will work there but like any complex searching a bit to long for comments and results are as unique as was the situations of that time and place. I have really have been considering a video (or 2) in this specific area because it poses unique challenges prior to 1870 census information for Americans with African Heritage. For now, lets see if i can help you get past current spot, what year(s) are you stuck on? Perhaps i can help recommend a resource for that timeframe or methods to help triangulate locations to look.
I am not sure how I missed this video, Larry but it really is full of great information. I can not function without my snipping tool. Cute PDF is new to me, but I am am running, not walking to download it. Just the other day I was trying to figure out how to save a file off of my doctor's office "my chart" thing for my own records and could not find a way to do it. I was able to print it, but now I will be able to. :) Thanks so much!
DNA Family Trees I very much like the way you present things. I’ve watched several videos now and 15 mins and one basic subject is perfect imo. It gives me time to try the subject you presented and then move on to the next video when I’m ready. I hate long videos that show too many subjects. You present things very well! Thank you I look forward to more.
K.A. Bercaw thank you for that feedback I did 10 in 6m and appears it was to fast, 5 in 25 at 5m each did a lot better Looking for the sweet spot for our topic and group I really appreciate you taking time to comment I may pull that 10 apart into smaller but more thorough groups ( and consensus so far is to lose the music lol) So will tone that WAY down to inaudible or remove completely
Thanks for this video. I had used cute pdf at work from 2016 to 2017 when i left, but had forgotten about it since then, so thankyou for reminding me about it! Also i am member of dna matchfinder tool groups on facebook and the admins suggested i use the snipping tool to post my matches into those groups which is fantastic! I have suggested your youtube channel for people who need help with thrulines!
That is so cool John! These two free tools (one we already have if using windows) have helped me SO MUCH over the years. I am glad to hear you used them too! I am looking forward to seeing how many people have used them before. Ill have to look into how to do a poll on RU-vid, i think there is a way, I really would like to know how many people watching use these and perhaps other tools that I NEED to be using that I am not. Hopefully the community will share those with us too!
Pamela Morrison me too! Also on find a grave when I click on image you can right click on the new page and select view image. Then that image u can drag and drop onto computer Often you won’t lol get a much larger and higher resolution since people uploaded camera photos Some of the older pictures you get better results snipping Where I use it most on findagrave is if an obituary is on the page or more family listed then I grab that for sure
sorry for the delay, i missed seeing your comment. in windows 10 bottom left type in " snipping tool" it is different for the different windows versions. what version do you have? if not windows 10 ill find it for you
I am a huge fan of SnipIt!!! So many people think it’s the same as a screen shot but it is NOT! Not only can you get specific about what you want to save, but it is SO much more clear than a screen shot. Thanks for thinking of pointing this tool out to people! 👍🏼
Hello! I just started watching your videos to learn about DNA. I’ve been researching my family for 20 years, so most of the information in the tree based videos is not new to me. I had RU-vid on auto play, so this video popped up. You asked for comments about the tools, so here are mine: I have been using Microsoft One Note since about 2006. I find it much easier to use than the PDF printers that are available. With One Note, you can print directly to an online notebook, organize it any way you wish, print on paper at any time, add text, draw, paste snips from the snipping tool (I use that a LOT), clickable links, and more. It eliminates the need for desktop file folders to organize those individual PDFs and allows much more freedom for customization. One Note is Part of Microsoft Office, so if you have that, it’s free, and already on your computer. By now I sound like an ad for MS, but I really do love it! As for the videos, thank you so much for explaining the DNA. They are easy to follow and very helpful. Consider me a new fan! Lol
Hi, I’ve been looking at your videos for only 2 weeks and have learned so much! Didn’t know about these two things. Also didn’t know how to expand the census reports to read the information clearly. Great videos. Thanks for taking the time to share!
You said that the snipping tool is part of Windows. But where does it live and how do you invoke it in Ancestry? Thank you for making this vid and the others as well. (BTW, the “muzak” in the background was distracting, IMHO)
sorry about the music, alot of people felt as you so later videos dont have it :) I do listen to the feedback. if windows 10 just type snipping tool in the search box at bottom and it will appear. it is a seperate program taht pops up but when you click new (as in new snip) it can be used to highlight the ancestry page (or anything on windows for that matter, i sue it al the time in other things). hope that helped
I've used cute pdf and the snipping tool for years and both are excellent. Great that you are telling folks. I used cute pdf for a book of over 300 pages, full of photos, and it coped perfectly with a huge amount of material. I did have to download the snipping tool from the Microsoft site as it wasn't on my latest pc for some reason. Thanks for another helpful video.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and subscribe and to give feedback! I am surprised at the number who actually have used one or the other. I think youll enjoy cutepdf, like i said, i make it the default printer for ALL my computers (that alone saves me quite a bit of money)
up at the top right click on your name, then site preferences. There is a check box for "display hints in tree", for "display potential ancestors". more information here - support.ancestry.com/s/article/Ancestry-Hints-1460091979344-3686#onoroff
I have real family tree but my ancestors are hard to find since their names were changed around (it's mostly made up of descendants from my parental grandparents and my maternal great grandparents from my maternal grandfather). Now I just create fictional family trees to make things more interesting.
:) what is the surname you have the issues with? perhaps someone watching has information that can help you? I have thought alot about a video on just that topic, name changes, nicknames, etc. I have (had before biological line changed due to the DNA test) an ancestor who everyone knew as LAFE, his grave maker has the name LAFE, his real name was Presley. That took a bit to work through ill tell you LOL. Add in the changes in spelling of the surname Basey from Basye and from Basse and alot more variants. Was one of the first challenges i had to overcome when i started genealogy because it was the eldest member of the family anyone knew off and this was before the internet, so I had to get through this one manually. Today with the search variations it is easier. if you need a second look, be glad to see if I can help ya break through or at least come up with some ideas of things to try that might help.
@@DNAFamilyTrees It's that my original ancestors were from India, so it's hard to find any records. I am waiting to buy an Ancestry DNA package and I find the ancestry subscription too expensive (waiting until I could afford it to get it again). My half sister who is part Irish and English has already taken her DNA Test. I subscribed for a few months last year. During that time my aunt, who has an Ancestry.com account shared to me family members from my maternal grandfather's side. My aunt came from another mother, so it was irrelevant to what I was searching for. She was lucky enough to find alot of relatives from her maternal side because she's part English and the Ancestry.com happened to have alot of records (She probably had family who knew alot about their ancestors as well).
@@theuploder8424 When you get your DNA test, use the methods in the color coding video to segment off the different lineages of DNA matches. This will help you target the specific area you are looking for. If your lucky perhaps even within a free trial period. I know a lot of countries don't have public records online yet but if you can make some matches using the color sorting method, perhaps you can contact some people who can help and who knows, perhaps even match a fairly close relative who has information. another thing you can do once your DNA results are back is download the raw data and upload to some other sites such as FTDNA and Gedmatch which are both free. There you get to compare against their databases too. And both offer some tools much more technical than ancestry (which is really more for high level research) where you can actually analyze the chromosomes for matches. Follow up if you take the DNA test and I will try to help you out.
@@DNAFamilyTrees Alright. Anytime I choose to subscribe to Ancestry.com again could always share my family tree with you and my DNA results with you if you like. By the way could you give my your ancestry account name so that I could have a way of contacting you when the time comes (or any other form of contact info at all)? Mine's Darren Ramlogan.
