One of the best things about Seeker is the people I meet. As a Data Base Admin in the IT world, I lived in a small box, surrounded by other people in small boxes. I was happy in my box as were many around me. We were well-paid to solve puzzles. But there is so much more to the world and I have learned that happiness grows in proportion to the puzzles, difficulties, and even discomforts we pursue. And pursue them we must, because our default mode seems to always be: sit on the couch and watch a screen. On Seeker, I have people like Leigh who spent his life on the water. And world-class sailors and boat builders who visit and share their stories. They open doors into a whole world of new adventures and problems to be solved. An endless supply of happiness waiting to be pursued.

I love that after being an aircraft mechanic for 23 years I'm still learning what mechanical "gadgets" are out there. I'd never heard of a chain coupler before. There truly is solution for everything. You just gotta find it.

Too avoid bristles coming off cheap paint brushes, take super glue and applyit to the top of the bristles at the ferrel and spray with some activator and that will stop bristles from coming out.

It isn't OCD about the wobbling motor. The flexible coupler is to take the loads off of the bearings in the motor so that they don't wear as fast. Even though you are not running that motor often, since it is taking a heavy load and is hydraulic, having those twisting loads on the motor shaft will shorten motor life significantly as the bearings are not rated or designed to take those loads and the surfaces in such a motor are extremely sensitive to wear from the bearings being damaged. My motors classes for becoming an industrial electrician covered this topic in depth, for all types of motors, including hydraulic. Also, there are specially tools for putting couplers together when motors are in place, but since you are the design engineer, you can design your installations where you shouldn't need them or simply make your own tools for such a task.
@jeverich

@@jeverich Let's see, I could trust you as some guy on the internet who I don't know about their qualifications or I could trust the 3 instructors I had in that program that each had spent at least 30 years in industrial maintenance and had seen what not putting couplers on motors did to them. They even had some examples that they showed us in class. It sounds like you have been using motors that have bearings rated for those forces. Not all motors are rated to have the shaft take those forces. Even if it is rated to take those forces, a couple will extend the life of the motor's bearing and usually the life of the motor in general. Couplers are not that expensive compared to the benefit.
@jeverich

I have a chain coupler connecting the generator (motor) on my wind turbine to the blades, I use a Martin 6018 Cover, Chain Coupling Cover 6018COV, (obviously there are many sizes) It seals around the coupler and you put 30 weight oil in it to constantly lube the chain. That might be a solution instead of a ton of grease for this for you

Hey Doug question why not use that yellow cover and put one of those grease gun fittings and fill it up with grease or whatever you want to pack it with. Also how can I make one of those double chains?
@SVSeeker

The cover is open at the ends so it's job is to just keep you out of the grease. And I have never make a double chain. Its not just to singles put together, the pins are twice as long. I've seen plenty of them on eBay.

Welder could have a capacitor failing, causing a weak start. Capacitor failure is pretty common, with the quality available today. You can also add more capacitors, for more starting power. Use a multimeter with mf (microfarads) setting, to test the capacitors. If you have trouble finding a meter with mf setting, they are common in the hvac field.

The chain coupling is in the ridged or grid coupling family and the housing or coupling shell, has shaft seals that prevent the lubricating grease from getting slung all of the deck and prevent water from getting in. This type are very common on industrial motors coupled to hydraulic pumps or compressors.. The rpms of this winch are so low that the “Doesn’t really matter approach works” fairly well too.

You are going to heat your oil some, don't know whether it is going to create an issue yet. You said the pump-motor had 1 inch ports, and you started reducing from that. In hydraulics, you need to go the other direction. That first elbow needs to be 1.25 inches, any bend needs to be the next size larger, don't reduce the size that comes out of the pump or motor anywhere. Get rid of the quick couplings, probably the worst heat creator in hydraulics, you only need quick couplings on something that is truly temporary, that's not. Why wouldn't you leave that motor on permanently? Like I said, it is going to heat some, but you don't know how much yet. Just remember heat destroys hydraulics. Keep the temperature of the oil at least under 160 degrees.
