Definitely would love a second part to this! It would also be interesting to see this concept in reverse (I don't know if you have done it), as in take myths and pair them up with books that follow the same path but aren't necessarily retellings of it. I can't wait to read Circe, and I did buy the Emily Wilson translation of the Odyssey per your recommendation! I adored it and it was definitely worth the money, also the book itself is so beautiful!

I’m so glad you enjoyed Wilson’s translation. It’s amazing when you hear or read interviews with her where she unpicks some of the sexist language historical scholars have used when translating it. As well as a lot of erasure of enslaved women being referred to as servants, as if that’s the same 🙄

Thank you so much for making this video, I am obsessed with Greek retellings but am ashamed to say I haven’t actually read the original stories because I always find it so overwhelming to chose a version to read. I’m definitely going to add a few of these to my TBR for 2122.

This is honestly the video I’ve been waiting for! I’ve been loving retellings but I’ve been in a web finding ancient versions so this is soooo helpful! I love the Eros and Psyche myth so anything relating to them would be amazing!

I loved this video! I actually also penned down some of the modern retellings because I hadn't heard of them before (like Lavinia!) I want to try The Odyssey someday and the translation that you have has such a beautiful cover that I'm tempted to pick it up. 🤩

Ah I loved the Emily Wilson translation!! So good, and I thought it was also really easy to read compared to some other translations because of the rhythm!

Thanks for the database! What a great source! I just read Kurangaituku by Whiti Hereaka which is a retelling of the Maori myth Hatupatu and the Birdwoman. I loved it. Highly recommend.

I just finished reading your book on Greek mythology and am living for it! ⚡️ I was in line for a covid test with my dad for 4 hours and brought your book with me and was discussing it with my dad. I love Greek myth but am yet to read any of the classics (I have just added this translation of the odyssey to my TBR). Do you have any recommendations of translations of Hesiod’s Theogony that you would recommend to a novice?

I've been thinking about writing some little stories of my own based on mythology (Orfeo et Euridice, for example), but wanted to have the whole selection under my hand. Best Regards!

Is there any Iliad translation you particularly recommend? I listened to the Odyssey on audiobook (Fagles translation, read by Sir Ian McKellen!!!) and it was so fantastic, I'd love to have a similar experience with the Iliad. I've been bouncing off it so far, unfortunately I read Antigone + Home Fire right after another at some point and both definitely gave me a better understanding of each other haha. I was completely on Antigone's side in the original play, but after reading Home Fire I was like ohh yes okay I get everyone else's objections now wow idk now :')

I really like the Richmond Lattimore translation which is the one in the video ☺️. The newer edition has a different cover but I’ve linked it in the description box if that helps. I haven’t listened to the audiobook version if there is one though sadly :(.

15:08 that is a mistake the source of the myth is mesopotamian not greek so it isn't the earliest sources of the myth
