"Most people can't afford that," which is one of the reasons why the US eventually pulled out of Vietnam. There comes a point when a nation's public has had enough, and they start complaining about a long war and bankrupting the nation. That, and the other side's anti-war propaganda has finally worked upon the public. At the time of Vietnam, there were communist sympathizers within the public, and within Congress, (especially the House), who were doing their level best to halt the war. That, in reality, lasted from the Korean War until today, even over the covert actions in South and Central America, as well as in the Caribbean. Eisenhower's policy was all about stopping the spread of communism, and containing it.
Jaii Raph guess you never saw “we were soldiers”. despite our own propaganda to the contrary, La Drang was a fucking disastrous battle. There are plenty of other examples too, it’s just that many of those have been disguised through clever use of semantics and through propaganda.
