I've heard of these folks because they're from the local area. But I've never listened to them before. They are eminently talented and skilled at what they do. I will have to check out of their songs to see what else I like.
Please check out their original video: • Polyphia - Playing God...

Talent = hours of practice and passion for doing it.

AND TALENT.... meaning you have a pre-desposition for the thing... that's what talent means... if i have a talent for painting and you don't my hundred hours of practice will yield more impressive results than your 100 hours of practice.... talent is not practice, nor passion... it's how much you improve when you employ those 2 things compared to another person who does the same but doesn't possess your talent

You should look up Tim’s writing process. It REALLY sheds a light on how he puts this stuff together. It’s very interesting how he leverages available technology to songwriters.

i think i recall that he used to use rap songs as a basis for his rhythms or something of the sort. but he stopped doing that a while ago.

Some people refer to this type of music as "Math Rock". You should check out their track "Ego Death" featuring Steve Vai, former Frank Zappa guitarist and world famous guitar virtuoso. I think you have to have a certain type of appreciation for guitar skills to fully enjoy this type of music, I love it.

I refer to Polyphia’s genre as “Maximalist Fusion”.

it's funny that you bring up how he thinks of so many notes seemingly at random at the point in the video that you did, because he actually talked about how he used a piece of software during his writing process that creates a lot of sounds and also arpeggiates note sequences at random based on a few parameters (like key, tempo, etc...) and so he let the arpeggiator come up with a sequence of notes for that ending "solo" and after throwing his own spin on it, he forced himself to learn it lol. If memory serves me correctly, I think he mentioned it on his personal youtube channel where he talks about the making of this song and shows the original recording session that he wrote the song in.

Please react to Ego Death by Polyphia next, featuring Steve Vai. I think you'd love it.

Good review of a great song and group. "Po-liff-ee-ya" lol. Tim uses an arpeggiator program to mix up his cords to "flex" now and then. The hard part is taking the arpeggiated notes and applying them to the fretboard. He says it can be a real bitch to figure out, and I believe him.

It's Po-lyph-ee-uh haha everyone gets it wrong. I saw them for the first time about 10 or so years ago. They are amazing live, gotta go see them when they come around your area. Edit: they have songs that are more "metal" especially their older stuff. But they don't often use distortion these days, opting for a clean chime like lead. This song being an exception with the signature acoustics being put at the forefront. I remember this song coming out and not long after the guitars being in production. I'm pretty sure they are sponsored by Ibanez.
