Ancient Treasure? + My Big Mistake!!!!! Barley Seeding - Montana
In today's video, I noticed something weird in the ground while seeding barley. I jumped out of the tractor, after pulling the seeding drill out of the ground. I discovered an old plow of some kind. So, I picked it up and brought it with me. Dad was very happy to hear that I didn't throw it back in the field!!! The ancient treasure is an ancient plow! hahahaha This discovery made my day seeding interesting for sure. Then I made a big mistake by forgetting to turn on the seeder so the drills were actually seeding. I didn't waste any seed but I am very disappointed that I had to turn back and make sure the seed was coming out. I learned a lot from my mistake and I will try not to do that again!!! We are still praying for rain because we are in a drought again this year! Thank you for watching my video!!!

Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

Kate, you have a good eye to have seen the sweep laying in the field. Even though you were not happy with yourself, earlier in the video. For making a mistake. At the end of the day, again I know your father is pleased with the job you did. Even more so, because you stopped the tractor before running your equipment over a hardened piece of metal from another piece of farm equipment. You would have really been upset if you had damaged something as you were seeding. For being a teenager (an awesome teenager, with great majurity), you proved yourself again today! Showing everyone really how important it is to always be paying attention to your tractor, your implement and equally the ground/field you are working in. At the end of the day, I hope your father told you, "Kate, you did a good job today". First, you caught your error and corrected it. Second, you really are paying attention and didn't cause an issue/damage to your farm equipment. This is why you should be getting a pat on your back. And feel good about yourself. Good eye spotting the metal plow part and removing it to avoid damage. Really appreciate the way you learn from mistakes and take corrective action to prevent a repeat. It’s like error proofing when you take a action like covering the unused hydraulic controls to avoid accidental activation. Great that you have taken us through seeding, fertilizing, rolling, combining, thrashing, etc. so we can understand how each part contributes to harvest. With all that is going on in the world with impacts to food production right now it is so very important to get it right. Can see you are looking for perfection but it is human to make mistakes. When you strive for perfection you achieve excellence. A big thank you to you, Darcy, your dad and the rest of the team for what you do. Best wishes for harvest. Your ancient treasure is a duck foot shoe. So called because of the way it looked. We used a duck foot with a rod weeder, with a spike drag , or Harrow behind it, to take care of that green carpet of kosher and break up the crust in the spring before seeding. The duck foot part of the toolbar you had set about two-and-a-half to 3 in to cut the roots off and lift the soil and drop it the rod Weider was set at about 3/4 to an inch to break up the crust that was left and loosen the soil around the weed roots.The harrow was Set at an angle to flip the weeds up on top of the soil so the sun can dry them out. This is how we did things before chemical herbicides.

Finding that shoe was a very good thing. It looks fairly new and you may have saved a tire or breaking the combine. So even if you missed some seeding the loss wouldn't exceed the potential damage cost. I think your doing a great job.

We call those types of blades, sweeps and they are usually on cultivator sections to shear the weed roots off just below the soil.

Great field find from the early Iron Age, Kate. Better found in the field rather than sticking out of a rear tractor tire!! In the Midwest, it is called a "field cultivator sweep". Some sweeps are called "duckfoot sweeps", with the entire tillage machine referred to as just a "duckfoot". With Midwest accent, one might say, " Hook onto the duckfoot and run it through the north 40", ha, ha, ha. Enjoy your videos, Kate, especially when you show that "I" am not the only farmer to make an error. Besides, once an error is corrected, it never becomes a mistake. John in Wisconsin BTW, I bought a new Walls chore coat, now made in Bangladesh, but I am not giving up the old one.

Oh man. Another blast from the past. A farmer I worked for would take those plow sweeps and weld a special point on them and then hard surface the sweep with a welder. They lasted a lot longer but it was tedious work. I went through miles of wire reconditioning those things. Nothing like sitting out in the hot Montana sun with a finicky Miller wire welder laying down hard surface beads.

Amazing you found this piece of metal in the field. You always notice important things that can damage the machine. I guess that's why your dad trust you so much (and of course also because you always do a great job, never take any risks and always do what is told you to do). All people make mistakes Kate, that is why we learn so much. I always wonder how you make those video's (well of course I know with your handy). Do you use a special programm like moviemaker or so? I guess you use the laptop or desktop for editing your video's? It is always great to watch your video's. I guess your family watch the video's too! You must have a big archive of your video's now! For me, I make a lot of pictures with my camera. Sometimes I also make video's. For the last two years I made some video's of my cat Kiki. I send the video's to an agency and now she was in two movies in all the cinema's in the Netherlands! Ha ha that would be great, Kate's AG movie in the cinema too! Hey Kate. You shared that you're in a drought there. Too bad that we can't share some of our rain with you. It's really wet here and we're still waiting on it to dry out so we can get started planting corn and baling hay. It's supposed to be dry over the weekend and next week so maybe we don't have too long to wait. Mistakes happen but, oh well, in the end, it worked out. You were able to get it fixed and that's all that really matters.

Hi Miss Kate ! Great video, That was pretty neat you spotting that plow blade. Thats what happens when you are paying attention. On another note, you need to quit putting yourself down. You are Amazing ! and you expect to much from yourself ! You are HUMAN, and humans make mistakes. It's ok. you learn from your mistakes and move on .If you think about all the talents you posess and the different things you do and each different job you do requires a different thought pattern and you are trying to inform us on every detail you are doing and why , and do the job you aare doing at the time. anyone would get confused and make an ocasional mistake... thats why they call them mistakes. it wasn't done on purpose . Very good catch on the plow piece! I think it would blend into the field and be difficult to see in time before possibly damaging the implement. In my opinion catching that plow piece before damaging the implement far outweighs the little seeding do over you had to do! LOL. The plow piece might make a nice hood ornament on your vehicle.

The way you add the music to your videos is funny and great. The music clips are very short, so they're not annoying. Then the different types you add have a sort of humorous effect. Another great video kate. 😀

Hello Kate, that metal foot as you call it, is for weeding out the weeds its about 12 to 14 inch wide on a chisel plough or a digger I think you call it in the USA , you have sharp eyes to see it well done, about the little mistake ,it happens to the best of us even your Dad & Uncle, I can see you are managing very well, keep up your good work, Farming is in your Blood, so Keep on Keeping on,show the world all about Farming & where food comes from, Regards to All your Family, Trevor.W.Bacelli. Hello Kate. As time goes by, you get prettier, and prettier! Lucky you didn't broke anything on your piece of equipment, with that piece of metal in the ground! When you mentioned using fifty pounds of barley with a hundred pounds of fertilizer, I immediately thought about the price of fertiliser that has increased so much this year. But as you mentioned, you use a lot less fertiliser for your crops, than most farmers do in your area. I'll pray that you will get rain in your area, to have good crops this year. I believe that my God can do it. He is all powerful! May he bless your hard work kate! You are in my prayers. Byyyyyeeeee!.

Great video, hope the seeding is going well. A bit of a mistake but thats ok you noticed it and sorted it. making mistakes is not a bad thing it's how we learn. Even found some ancient treasure, think of the damage that could have done. Seeding looks hard don't think i could do it. Great work. Thank you so much.😀
