Ancient Wood Preserving Technique For Log Cabin

Shou-sugi-ban Yakisugi is an old traditional Japanese technique for preserving wood, by burning it with fire. Because I only want to use nature's resources, and do everything myself, this was naturally a good technique for my log cabin. Tar, Turpentine and Linseed oil was mixed and used as a finishing treatment on the wood. These are all natural resources that I wanted to create myself but unfortunately couldn't this time. I will do a video on how to make this yourself in the future.
My new puppy is called "Barr" (meaning spruce needle in Swedish). He is a Vorsteh, German Shorthaired Pointer. He is now my companion and you will get to follow his journey in all future videos.
What Clothes Do You Recommend For Hard use in the Forest❓
I have always been very cautious with answering this question, because I have used a lot of different clothes and brands. I have now been very fortunate to work with the Swedish brand "Revolution Race" 🪵🏞️ for 4 months and counting. I can now happily say that this is a brand I stand by. These clothes are priceworthy, durable and functional. What I love about the company is that they really listen to the customers and is willing to make improvements.

I'm a grandma in New Zealand and your video journey reminds me of my youth, living off-grid at 11,000 ft elevation in Colorado and sailing with two others, 17,000 nautical miles from NZ to Seattle on the Pacific Ocean. These adventures taught me to be self-reliant in an age before GPS and computers, which is what I most admire about you, and no needless distracting chatter. It's fantastic you honour your grandpa. Everything you choose is designed for a task, not looks which is why you are right to be cautious commenting about clothing and footwear. In life-death situations you are not the fool with trainers and soggy matches, your axe never stowed unprotected or used one-handed risky. The only cringe was Klas swinging an axe with trainers on. Forget about the sooty cautions, I see you preparing for work well. I hope a sweet, practical, knowledgeable young woman finds you and I especially liked the way you lit up in the Stockholm University journalist interview.

Yes, old technology cement and a tractor treated 2x4s still mad respect but I wouldn't have used them P.S. I know some people might think I'm just saying this because i want people to think this or that, but no 1) I view alot of these things as sort of cheating and would've taken longer to make most things from scratch even if it means I get a worse outcome in the long run 2) I couldn't afford to cheat even if I wanted too because I'm a broke bastard

I grew up in a pioneer town in northern British Columbia in the 1960s. I see so many techniques used by the old timers in your videos. My wife's family came from Sweden and her great grandfather built several log structures, one of which is still standing. I see similar detail in his work. It's worth noting that most of these skills can be learned, except the most important two: patience and diligence. Either you have them or you don't. This lad has them in spades.

I appreciate all the work you put into filming, editing, and posting. Barr looks like such a nice playful companion and is into everything at the moment like pups do. It was very interesting seeing you use the Japanese technique. I thought once the wood was burnt and brushed off that was enough protection from the elements, was surprised when you started to paint the wood with the Linseed Oil, Turpentine and Tar concoction. I guess one is never to old to learn. You are coming on along beautifully with your build. I am sure you must be very proud with what you have built and achieved and I have never seen a person of your age build something like this on his own and all by hand. I enjoy watching your achievements and your videos very much. Till the next time. Greetings from the UK.

I didn't know you would add an oil/sealant (?) to the Japanese art of Shou sugi ban but considering you get the same weather as we do in Canada in makes sense. Nice to see Barr. He's all puppy. Seems like he could have a career in hunting truffles as well. At around 6 to 10 months the adult teeth will come in (literally overnight) and he'll begin to settle down. The first two years are the best & worst so enjoy every moment. He seems really happy and that is a reflection on the love you give him. In Scandinavia/Norther Europe it's been an age old tradition to use tar from the pitch and roots of Pinus sylvestris to protect houses, roofs and boats. It was a relatively expensive process, hence only important/royal constructions was originally treated. In Norway we have 900 yr old stave churches that are still treated with tar (and are the world's oldest standing/functioning wooden buildings together with the many Japanese temples). Also, there even was a law how to use tar and wool to protected the viking ships, like the Oseberg ship built in 820 AC. A more modern version is now to replaced the ancient hole-in-the-earth kiln burned tar with retort tar from cast iron vessel (still 1 company in Norway). This process meant that tar became more available as prices sunk, and another change was that ppl started mix the tar with additives, like: 6 parts pine tar (the preservative), 3 parts boiled linseed oil (gives a golden surface), and 1 part turpentine (thinner consistency/penetration).

Great video! My understanding is that fire treating wood is a traditional way of building around the Nordics too, at least here in Finland it's been traditionally done in construction. Also for example hay spits and telephone poles have been seasoned in this way, so they would last in harsh conditions for many decades. I've seen this done with a blowtorch in a house project, not as hard core as building a fire like you've done. 😀

I used this technique to make cedar lights in my bathrooms. They came out great. You work SO hard! Truly an inspiration for all ages.
