I love this way of presenting history, where you pick a theme instead of just going over an event

Correction: The canal that Necho tried to build was not like the current Suez Canal, but connected the Nile to the Red Sea. The reason he stopped, and sent an expedition around Africa instead, is that an oracle predicted that the canal would be used to invade Egypt.

I mean if there’s giraffes I think the Horn of Africa is a better guess than mid east/ Sri Lanka 🤷‍♂️

Regarding who you missed: Eudoxus of Cyzicus, who in the 2nd century BC travelled to India in Egyptian service, then on his own tried to circumnavigate Africa from Gades (Cadíz) to India.

Great to see you again, I always enjoy your videos. The hit and miss of what information survived the repeated cataclysms of history is fascinating: Bits of Hanno's journey; Recipe for Roman fish sauce; Half a Greek play; Inventory of a Mesopotamian merchant. It all combines into a rich tapestry, but the full reality of our ancient past would probably blow our minds.

I genuinely get excited when you post a video, because it's always good :D Africa is a cornucopia of interesting history. Sadly for Africans, history just keeps happening there

The ancient Egyptians I believe had a pretty good idea of the source of the Nile. So they must have looked.

Ancient geography is one of those topics that's intrinsically interesting. I'd love a video about what the ancients knew about India!

Hi Generic History I know this comment might be out of nowhere but I was wondering if you had any book recommendations on Spartan society and economics. Their society really interests me and I'd love to learn more. thanks

Paul Cartledge is a pretty good author for Spartan history. He published a book on them 2002 that I read a few years ago and really enjoyed.

Dear Mr Generic - Your graphics need to be proof read before you incorporate them into your videos, there are nearly always one or two mistakes in each video. (E.g. 'Wondering' on your Hanno map should read 'wandering', (to move nomadically). 'Wondering' is what you do when you don't know something and are imagining the possibilities, like this : 🤔 ). I can help with proof reading if you like. I've been an English language teacher for 18 years. 😉

Hano, Herodotus, and many modern people prefer to measure distance in travel time. In Alberta it is common to say Town X is 3 hours away rather than 300 km.

No, he didn't. He discovered Lake Tanganyika, which is part of the Congo basin, not the Nile basin.

Dear Mr Generic - are you going to tell us about the other explorers who you mention at the end of this video, and make a part two ? I agree that imagining what the ancients didn't know, and their attempts to find out, is fascinating. ❤

I hope to cover more explorers and discovery stories in the future as it's a source of greta fun for me. I find the idea of pre-modern people taking to the waves fascinating! and thank you for all the proof reading by the way! it's a historic blindspot of mine

why would the Egyptians even try that? Portugal only did it because they wanted to cut the Turks out. is it really worth it too go all that way if you are right at the middle? very strange that they even tried too do that. I mean they also didn't know how big Africa is and hindsight is 20/20 but still.
