@Ian Williamson When I first started hearing (& understanding !) that some people are Born-of-the-Spirit while incarcerated, it struck me how powerful a testimony that is. [Here you are - your body so limited, imprisoned - yet, your spirit comes to (eternal !) Life and your soul is as free as ever it can be !!!] God alone is able to restore our souls within us, no matter where we are 🙂 I rejoice with you in your awesome Redemption/Salvation. [My ‘imprisonment’ was a spiritual one - like Mary Magdalene I was (literally) ‘inhabited’ by demons. So it was a radical Salvation.] Brother, I hope you’re being blessed by watching the program “The Chosen”. Just get the phone App (same name), & it casts to your TV. It’s rather amazing. Godspeed.
I'm 25 years old. I remember singing this hymn in the Methodist church as a child. My relationship with Christ has gotten more serious in these past few months. Glory to GOD.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, don't you think that it is amazing to realize that whatever country we go to, there is a Christian church, even where persecution against Christians is tough? This sacred hymn helps me think of it and how unbeatable Christ is. Greetings and blessings from Italy.
I often listen to this hymn in awe, both at what our precious Lord did for us and at his including ALL peoples, tongues and nations into one beautiful family. "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me to fully grasp."
We are using this hymn as our closing hymn tomorrow morning at our Anglican church in North Idaho, USA. I am the organist and can’t wait to play it with gratitude!
Absolutely breathtaking. This hymn helped my dad when he was suffering a stroke then a heart attack. He was singing along and crying even when nothing else made sense. So thankful for my Savior, Jesus Christ!
I was at my little Chapel.. with about 7 other members one Sunday evening about 23 years ago now..this was one of our hymns that evening. I had never heard it before. .. was completely overwhelmed with it and the rousing singing from our small congregation..I immediately said this is the hymn I want at my funeral. "My chains fell off. My soul was free" how brilliant are all the words! I have left instructions that I definitely want this hymn at my funeral...thank you..
Why can't we have these songs in our churches now, instead of all the younger teens repetitive music? These types of hymns are truly uplifting and full of real voices sung with passion and true belief.
My self and family moved to Alabama after 37 years in WA state. The churches there most of them have modern worship and praise leaders and there isn't anything that would inspire like the old hymns do. I'm sure there some new songs like Mary did you know? or Praise the Lord. Most songs that repeat one verse for 5-6 times get this music trained Baptist just bored to tears. GOD bless the old masters and mistress Fanny Cosby for their blessed hymns.
How profound are the words of this song. Imagine Christ leaving his Father's throne above, emptying himself of all but love so he could shed his innocent blood for Adam's helpless race! I am part of that race, the human race - a race so pleasant, so gifted, so immensely creative and yet on the flip side also capable of destructive greed, selfishness and pride. That is who we are because of the sinful nature in us. But praise be to God! Christ bled for us, the helpless race and now calls us to reconcile with God. I listened to that call in 1983 and today I join in to sing this song with gratitude because " I am alive in Him my living head and clothed in righteousness divine." The words of the song come alive in me because I realized that only by accepting Him as my Lord and savior can I fully understand the meaning and purpose of life. I am so grateful I did. You who reads this and yet haven't done the same, please repent of your sins and accept the lordship of Christ over your life and you will truly enjoy the words of this song. Amen.
Written in May 1738 a few days after Charles Wesley truly found his relationship with God and gave himself to Christ on Romans 8 and when St Peter felt the chains falling from him Charles must have felt the same assurance and peace . The beginning of writing 6,000 songs and verses in faith. Truly written in the Spirit this song is as powerful today as it was nearly 300 years ago. May everyone who watches and sings along to it be as blessed as I am. Chris x
I am so much in agreement with you here. I have heard this hymn since my tender ages and as I mature, it becomes very powerful in my heart. Chris, bless your heart for sharing this profound history of such a distinguished church hymn.
My late mother's favorite hymn. She passed away suddenly of a heart attack on the pre-dawn morning of December 22, 1996 and we sang this at her funeral. I cry every time I hear this because it reminds me of her. When I was a child she taught Sunday School and was an elementary schoolteacher during the week. Now I live in Asia and I have followed in her footsteps to become an elementary school teacher, teaching English as a second language. My father has long since retired as an attorney and he always says he is proud that I followed my mother's profession. Thank you, mom, for inspiring me, for loving me. Every time I play this song on my phone, I dedicate it to you.
I woke up with this hymn in my spirit. Thank you Jesus you did it all for me. All Glory ,Praise, Honour Adoration and Thanksgiving be unto your Holy Name forever and ever. Amen
Love this. So beautiful to hear a crowd singing together. Even if you can’t sing, get in a large group and this is how we all sound. There’s just something about God’s children harmonizing together. Absolutely beautiful.
My sentiments exactly Terry. I am 78 years old I missed the old hymns that each Taylor Story of the Savior and the love of God! There’s always praise teams in the church services now the local bodies of Christ not involved in the worship services it’s a shame.
@@jennieparker327 You are two years ahead of me on our journey to join the Lord. I figure this one will be sung by our heavenly cloud of witnesses...and I sure hope to join them!
Now THAT is spine-tingling good doctrine! He searches and saves, we arise, repent, and follow! Oh if this could only be sung and understood in churches today!!!!
Amen! Even Holy Mother Church incorporates many of His hymns to this day. How sad that for so many what passes nowadays as "Christian music" isn't much more than 1) I love You, God, 2) I think You're awesome, 3) You "lift me up." It's just so lazy and only aims at appealing to the broadest audience without bothering to offering any theology to it
I heard this hymn in my childhood as my grandmother came from the Methodist church. And today, oh bless the Lord for this amazing hymn. The beautiful poetic words, verse by verse is absolutely captivating, fascinating and mesmerizing.I'm now in my mid sixties and I listen to it every night before I fall asleep. Thank you Lord.
This is perhaps one of the most amazing hymns written by the great classic composer: Charles Wesley. My favorite stanza is that which attempts to describe the love of Jesus Christ speaking of Him willfully leaving His Fathers thrown above... so free, so infinite His Grace... He Emptied Himself of all but Love... bleeding for Adam's helpless race to save us from eternal death. Truly, …AND CAN IT BE!!!
"He Emptied Himself of all but Love." That phrase fascinated me, every time I heard the hymn sung, from the earliest age. What a thought. What a mystery to be investigated.
@@WaterlooExpat You're right! I think there is an element of mystery in God’s love for mankind. It’s in the solving of the mystery that we discover our value to God - The Mystery of God’s Love. As the Psalmist cries out with 'wonder' and 'declares' in (Psalm 144:3-4), “LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Indeed, what a mystery to be investigated!
Two years ago, I was searching the internet for hymns that were specific to the crucifixion. The search engine suggested Can It Be That I Should Gain? I wandered to RU-vid and typed it in and found this video. I have been in love with this song ever since then.
My 30th born again birthday is this month, and I am constantly struck and captured by the fact that it is God's keeping power that holds us in the palm of his hand. From 1 Peter 1 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. I am so grateful.
I listen to this at least once a week, i find it very healing and uplifting following the passing of my beloved Mother. The organ played this as we walked out of the Church. Always been my favourite hymn.
This song was ringing and singing in my mind, and I u-toobed it, and arrived here. What a blessing to see brothers and sisters of all shapes and sizes standing together to sing one of the greatest hymns of all time!!! The laypeople of this church, from all walks of life, did an incredible presentation. It also warms my heart to see that this Holy praise is on the verge of 5MM views! Despite what you've heard in the media, Almighty God is STILL large and in charge, now and forevermore!
Charles wesley probably the greatest hymn writer that existed so powerful his gift you never stop whistling or singing them after you hear them my favorite, and a man who did have a genuine gift from god
With all the world has gone through in the past 2 years, what a blessing to hear a hymn like this and know the Christian hope is Jesus and God's love for mankind
As a teenager, before becoming a christian I knew this as "the cyclist's hymn" because of the line "my chain's fell off". Praise God I came to understand the real meaning!!
As a Catholic I appreciate tbe wonderful theological and musical value that the Wesley's talent and faith gave us. We ignored or shunned them for too long. Little of today's output compares, spiritually or musically
I never heard each verse repeated at the end of the verse of this glorious hymn. I'm sitting here with tears flowing freely from my eyes in front of God and everybody at the library right now. Who cares? I'm not ashamed of my tears.
Oh how my heart sings out this song so often. At work, at church, at home! I cannot sing it louder or more intently to my Lord. It is unbelievable! And can it be??
Songs like this remind of what I miss so much about today's "worship" music; the whole congregational singing style. Not just a few people on stage singing while the audience stands looking as if they are at a concert.
I agree. I cannot feel spritual in any way with a gaggle of teens swaying away in front of the alter like a backing group for the Eurovision song contest
Today is my 1st time of listening to 100 nonstop inspirational hymns and I am lifted in my spirit, soul and body. Lord, bless the composers, singers and media in Jesus name. I'm refreshed with my cherished hymns..
Been walking with the Lord since I was 5 and now I am old, and I'm STILL learning of His grace. If you do it right, you never finish learning. Love this hymn - one of my absolute favorites.
Fur - I never used to believe in gold, either. Never saw it. But those that went searching for it in Alaska during the latest gold rush, found it. Just because i didn't see it and didn't believe in it, didn't mean it didn't exist. God said He would be found by those who seek Him with all their hearts. I sought Him very hard when I was 5 - my life had been horrible and I needed someone to rescue me. He was there. He didn't stop the pain, but He did give me the strength and wisdom to overcome it - and now I help others. This is His grace. I hope you will search for God and find Him - because He is right there at your shoulder just waiting. I will keep you in prayer.
I don't believe in God because there is no evidence that he exists, there are thousands of contradictions in the Bible, evolution is real, and the universe and Earth are clearly older than 10,000 years. I want to believe in a god, but I can't, it doesn't make sense. And please don't pray for me, thank you.
compare this hymn, or is it a gospel song, to what passes for sacred noise in so many of today's churches. What a breath of fresh air. I liked the hats too.
Robert Ramsay Charles Wesley's 300th anniversary of his conversion was celebrated in 2007 - so technically this isn't a gospel hymn if by that you mean something recent coming out of southern United States - Charles was an ordained minister in the Church of England though his hymns are fundamental to the Methodist tradition - matters not really if the message of his words continue God's work here on earth 😊
Ah, those smiling joyous faces, truly singing, praising---how they added to that exhilarating music filled with such encouraging lovely words!! Thank you for this piece. It's wonderful.
This song was composed out of pure conviction powered by the Holy Spirit. That is what is missing in this generation. Unfortunately the desire for money, fame and mere exhibition of talents have taken the center stage. But God will revive us again!
...when ever I sing this hymn, I always break down with tears; and it's indeed an instrument of warfare in prayers. When prayers can't flow from my heart, I grab a copy of this hymn, start singing and, soon after, my mouth is released to utter prayers tirelessly with great assurance of open heaven!
This the greatest hymn ever written. It explains and contains all the information and heart attitude required for salvation. If I couldn't have my Bible and could only have one paper sheet of Christian related information, I would choose the sheet music of this hymn.
My son and husband are watching the Michigan and Ohio football game that is being played in Ann Arbor, Mi. I am having a better time listening to these beautiful hymns that bring back so many wonderful memories of days gone by. Was blessed to go to a large Assembly of God Church in Flint, Michigan. Now I am blessed to go to a large Christian Reformed Church in Ann Arbor, Mi. where the congregation and choir sing these beautiful hymns which are such a blessing.
perfect can't stop singing this.if people don't really like church hymns and sing all those r&b hip hop really i don't know how their life looks like.stay bless
These lovely hymns bring back so many memories of my family and I worshiping on Sundays and hearing the church bell ringing. Oh how I wish I could bring them back!!
"Died he for me (a former reprobate), who caused his pain for me, who him to death pursued Amazing love! (which i still can't figure out)How can it be That thou, my God(yes you are mine), shouldst die for me?"
Be blessed my brother. Weren't we all such. God's grace abounds that while we were yet sinners Christ died. God, The Creator bruised Himself for man, the creature's, sin.
This hymn console me and make me imagine how heaven will be one day with all the instruments and all of us singing together to praise God, It my prayers that God will help me and guide me in all my ways so that I will be part of the glorious day one day 😢
I grew up singing these sacred hymns at the Nazareth Moravian Church in Manchester Jamaica West Indies and O how I praise God for this life, for those who makes it possible for all to hear these songs. They brings back great memories and draws me nearer to Jesus Christ.
