My step-father is Todd Blackburn played by Orlando Bloom. He fell roughly 70 feet waking up with no memory of the day, the movie portrayed him as being brand new when in fact he's been with the unit for quite some time. Years later he met with the pilot that flew the black hawk he fell out of, and the pilot thought he killed Todd. According to him there was in fact RPG fired and he had to quickly drop the bird which created slack in the rope. Then banked the opposite direction he was fast roping from which snatched it right out of his hands. Whole story inspired me to join the army and in fact did in 2014 and became a paratrooper. Now with multiple deployments to include Afghanistan, new goal is to drop my aviation packet to fly

Some people have criticized how Tom Sizemore as Col. Danny McKnight walks around so calmly while under fire, but the real Danny McKnight forced himself to appear calm because he thought showing fear would unnerve his inexperienced soldiers. Reading the Pilots account of the 2 snipers that saved him hits harder than in the movie. They knew it was a suicide mission. Also, when he's hit across the face in the movie with a rifle, it was more likely the severed arm of one of his crew that the Somalis were butchering, according to his account, the movie censored it. Some of the men's wives couldn't even identify their bodies when they were recovered. The crew of super 6-4 survived the crash unlike in the movie where it's just Durant, and were all killed and torn apart. It really was like she said, a zombie horde. Eye witness accounts covered in the book from the Somali side say they saw the mob converge on 6-4, then they saw body parts flying through the air.

I was in the 6th grade when this happened, along with Desert Storm it's one of my first memories in regards to U.S. politics and our military. I can remember waking up too news footage of deceased American soldiers being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu. A few years later and I was washing dishes at a midwest diner (one of my very first jobs) and found out that my immediate supervisor was on the ground with his fellow Rangers that day. He was probably only about 30 at the time, heavy drinker, probably suffering from PTSD.

The movie only shows Air Force pararescueman Sgt. Timothy A. Wilkinson for a moment as he decides to stabilize the wounded crewmen inside the helicopter rather than move them, but he was awarded the Air Force Cross (the second highest award for valor that Air Force personnel can receive) for his life saving efforts in Mogadishu. The story that stands out in my mind was when he had to run from building to building under heavy fire to treat the wounded. Miraculously, he wasn't hit. One of the Rangers said "God must really love medics!" and others joked that the Somalis underestimated what a ridiculously slow runner Wilkinson was and were firing too far ahead of him (in case you didn't know, when trying to hit a target moving laterally across your field of fire, you fire ahead of it so the moving target and the moving bullets will meet at the same place).

Due to the disaster of this mission, the Clinton administration decided to withdraw Task Force Rangers weeks later and the rest of the American forces I believe by the first quarter of 1994. Some time between the Task Force Rangers' withdrawal and the entire US force withdrawal, the administration did allow tanks to be sent into Somalia to provide more armored support for the short remainder time. Armored support is something which I believe Task Force Rangers previously lack, forcing them to go in Humvees and flatbed trucks, causing Rangers and Deltas to suffer casualties. General Garrison also requested gunships like AH-64 Apaches and AC-130 Spectre to provide better air support instead of risking the Black Hawks (weeks or months prior, a Black Hawk of the 10th Mountain Division was shot down by RPG, and since then helicopter RPG shoot down became quite a concern), but those requests were denied. The few dead soldiers bodies were dragged to the streets and broadcasted, creating public outcry & anger. Not wanting another potential backlash, Clinton administration didn't want to interfere with the Rwandan genocide, that resulted hundreds of thousands more death.

The term "skinny(ies)" came from the novel Starship Troopers, which was a popular book amongst the men of Task Force Ranger. The men just applied it to the locals. One of my favorite things about this film is that the pilot who runs from the Little Bird to help bring Busch to the helicopter is played by Warrant Officer Keith Jones, who played himself and recreated his rescue during the fight. Five Black Hawks were actually shot down that day. The two that crashed inside the city and three, Super 6-2, 6-6 and 6-8, all managed to crash land either at the base or a shipping port inside friendly lines. Super 6-2 was shot with an RPG that impacted in between the copilot and a third Delta sniper, Brad Halling, who was onboard with Shugart and Gordon. He took over control of the right side minigun after the crew chief was shot while they were providing aerial cover for the men at Crash Site 2.

Somalis celebrate this battle for forcing the powerful United States to leave Somalia, but it made Somalia a pariah country that nations capable of providing humanitarian aid were unwilling to go into for fear of being k***ed. Also, seeing an outside nation's attempt to intevene in a civil war/humainarian crisis result in the bodies of the people who were sent to intervene being mutilated and dragged through the streets caused anti-interventionalist sentiments which prevented anyone from trying to help when the Rwandan geno**de happened.

The book will explain that the Delta Boys are packing infrared strobe lights. When in a stationary position. The men from Delta place these strobes in nearby windows and door frames. The " Little Birds " orbiting overhead have a picture of the friendly occupied buildings. Therefore, any bodies approaching those buildings without a strobe are dead meat. There is no need for the Hollywood People's plan to have " Eversman " to mark a target building roof that is full of people directing fire at a building that has windows and doors lit up by infrared strobes. The people on the roof top will automatically be dispatched by the four " Little Birds " that are overflying the area. There are other inaccuracies in the movie that was explained correctly in the book. Riddley Scott failed.

Also, several years ago. Some "guys" went to Somalia and brought back the rotor to the Super 6-4 Helicopter. It actually staying in the same spot since 1993. This of course was not an easy task by no means as that country is still very much ripping itself apart.

First time watching ur reaction and I love the way you emotionally connect with the movie which, by the way, was actually produced and directing using real life fotos and videos of the actual events. The book is much more graphic. When the first Black Hawk Down, went down, one of the rotor blades struck a building which unfortunately took the forehead of a 2 yr old baby. Sooo sad. The pilot Duran got released after the Pres CLINTON stated the fact that...if they didn't release the Pilot , Duran, they would feel the full power of the American force. War is horrible , but I know at times are and will always be necessary. Love your vibe.....have you seen LONE SURVIVOR ?. keep up the good work. Stay safe and God Bless.

First pilot shot down is Jeremy piven, excellent actor. In a cult classic movie, about a magician holed up in Vegas, and a bunch of hitmen coming to kill him. Also in Entourage! Second pilot, ran for Congress for real, this past year. Tom Sizemore the ranger Colonel, excellent actor and resume, also in saving private Ryan, point break, Heat, and other great movies.

A beautiful True story or true events. Others like this are Saving Private Ryan, 13 hours, Lone Survivor, hacksaw Ridge, Once we were Soldiers, Fury, Dunkirk, Thin Red Line, Unbroken, Big Red One, Hamburger Hill, American sniper,1917. Also look for a short video here. Type in Roy Benevides the Lazarus Soldier! I met him once in the early 90s, when I was stationed at Bragg! He may be the greatest soldier of all time! Funny...most of the guys in this movie are British or Australian . A young Tom Hardy, is in this! The captain is the British guy in The Patriot!

Fun fact about the pilot trapped against the wall. When the Somalian hit him with the rifle it wasn’t actually a rifle it was one of his comrades arms. The reason it’s portrayed as a rifle here is because the pilot forced himself to remember it as a rifle until years later. He couldn’t bear the thought of being beat with his friends arm

Also to note again. It is not public. But.... The boys went back to Somalia and offed Adid for General Garrison's retirement. It is definitely not a coincidence that Adid was killed and then Garrison retired.

@28:55 "Feels like a zombie movie" And that's why I can't help but be conflicted when it comes to these kind of movies. Most americans will never experience what these soldiers and the people living in this city during this event, had to live through. When all someone has seen is depictions like this in movies and tv shows, it is very easy to reference fictional depictions when hearing about real events. Yeah, in this shot, there are similarities to the choreography used in zombie movies. Very dehumanizing choreography.

I couldn’t even imagine what they went through, so I can’t relate to anything soldiers went through. I have however experienced the rocks being thrown, chairs, tear gas during riots in Kenya so that feel is familiar to me. Its the flocking in and zoning inwards that felt like zombies. But I very much had mini flash backs that I decided to cut out during my outro because it got too long.

Although they did not address it in the film, these events had some very significant, long-term consequences internationally. There was so much bad publicity around this event centered around the Somalis holding Durant and the media showing footage of the bodies of American soldiers being dragged through the streets and desecrated that the Clinton administration became reluctant to get involved in humanitarian efforts. That was the driving reason why there was no efforts to intervene or even send humanitarian supplies during the Rwandan Genocide: 300,000 Rwandans died because a !@#$%^ Somali warlord had his militia doped up on qat and attacking UN forces the previous year.
