*I like how you said "it's usually the calm before the storm" at the beginning of the guitar solo because that's what it was supposed to represent. The mellow, close your eyes happiness at the start of the solo was the high from the drug kicking in, feeling euphoric. Then it gets a little chaotic as they're starting to come down. Then it's just full throttle frenzy as the user is withdrawing, needing more, now.*

This is by far, my favorite album of Metallica's catalogue. The Library of Congress agrees, as it is the only metal album yet to be enshrined. Favorite song though is Dyer's Eve off of their next record ...And Justice for All. The best way to listen to it IMO is to listen to the previous song on the record: To Live is to Die written by the late, great Cliff Burton. Then it goes instantly right into Dyer's Eve. This is the way you listened to it back in the day on cassette tape or vinyl. Back in the days when you listened to an album straight through as an experience and not just one song.

I was an opiate addict for around 12 years, I started when I was 15. Been sober many years now. I quit methadone cold turkey, was taking 165mg a day for 2 years. That's enough to kill several people but it didn't even get me high just made me feel normal. My withdrawal was absolute hell and I almost died. I had seizures, hallucinations, intense anxiety and constant pain. It lasted for a full month. It was like the flu but thousands of times worse for a whole month. I just wanted to comment and say anyone can quit, you have it in you I promise. You have to want to quit for yourself. Only when you're tired of it and want it to end will you be able to finally get clean. Who ever needs to hear this keep going, you got this. It sucks and takes years to get back to normal but it's 100% worth it. You're amazing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

As I've mentioned to other reactors such as yourself who grew up on hiphop and just now discovering metal: Hip-hop (rap) from yesteryear (I'm talking the good non-mainstream great lyrics and messages - not the 'gucci-gang and drug/gun/hos mainstream stuff) and Metal music are very similar. They have more in common than your realize. They both articulate very deep messages and profound meaning in their lyrics, and usually comes from a very deep, introspective or downright angry place. The biggest difference is the live instrumentation in metal (that hip-hop samples bass and guitar riffs and even beats). The composition of the instruments in metal music serves the same purpose as the musical score in a movie does. (the haunting sounds of Jaws, or the high-energy battle music of The Avengers or often sad and melancholic sounds in heart-wrenching scenes). The music enhances the acting, action, and dialogue in a movie broadcasting and magnifying the intended emotional response - just as the guitars and drums enhance the mood and emotions of the listener to metal. Those movies would not be nearly as moving or impactful if it wasn't for amazing music being played by the symphony-orchestras. You nailed it when you said "Country music could have the same lyrics, and will produce a completely different emotion". That's it!!! Metal music (most of it) has a message - and that message is honestly very similar to hip-hop: rebellious, anti-establishment, anger at the elites, oppressors, and corporations that rule over people, war pigs that use soldiers for their gains. And it hammers home its message by stirring the emotions in the listener to give them something to identify with - whether that's mutual anger, rage, loss, frustration, etc - through the instruments and their compostition.

Glad you dug this one and got into the lyrics, one of their absolute best, possibly their magnum opus. My recommendation for what to listen to, the way I got into ‘Tallica, probably wouldn’t work well as a reaction, but the album S&M is a great way to hear the breadth of their work. It’s a live album they did with the San Francisco Symphony back in 1999, and while it’s missing a few greats like “Fade to Black,” it’s still a great album. This song in particular shows off how Metallica composes for a live audience. The repetition throughout of “Master…Master!” gives even someone hearing it for the first time enough examples to get used to it and to hear the people in the crowd shouting it each time, as James Hetfield (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) barks out the first one and then gestures for the audience to yell the second one. Fans who’ve been to multiple shows have even started singing along to the mellow guitar solo that he plays with Kirk Hammet (lead guitar), which is a strange but beautiful evolution of a song they have performed in almost every show since the album was released 36 years ago. You mentioned the drums played by Lars Ulrich, not the most technical of metal drummers and he’s had his ups and downs with discipline and practice over the years, but seeing the performances he puts in lately, he’s taken such criticism to heart and really stepped up his live work as of late. Most Metallica songs give writing credit to him and Hetfield, which you can really see if you watch some making ofs, Lars is quite the producer and song shaper, often talking about what a given track “needs” or should have to achieve what they want. This was also the last album to feature their original bassist, Cliff Burton, who tragically died in a bus accident while touring to promote the album.

Starts off kinda hard but just, when your body starts letting you know that it's been a while since we had a fix. Gets harder as the anxiety increases. Then you hit that airy, smooth, bridge, when you first feel that drug washes over you. Then immediately starts to Amp back up, because even under the influence that addict already starts to look for where the NEXT hit gonna come from. Stopped in for the Metallica, stayed for the insight. I very much like what you have to say, young man. Very well thought-out, very open-minded. Subbed.

It’s the adrenaline rush from the power and pace of the instrumentation that creates a unique feeling, in combination with the content of the lyrics. Great reaction!

What a great comment !! It is a sad song when you think about someone being addicted, but so full of rage and aggression against that addiction. Glad you’re expanding you’re musical journey !!

In regards this song invoking feelings of rage, I would say it would be closer to a rage that invokes self hatred. Addiction is an arduous battle with yourself. Always putting yourself down, always hating what you are, always lamenting the next spiral that is to come while trying to recover. Relapsing is a very real fear as well as a strong temptation. Really powerful stuff.

Love your reactions man! I like your deep dives into the songs, but I must ask. That wooden thing that doesn't stop spinning in the background. does it have a name? I need one! xD

Rage is a good word. For the waste, the knowledge of the path being trodden but that pull is so very strong and we may as well be puppets.

Its always interesting to watch people crossing over to new types of music. Reaction videos seem to open peoples minds past preconceived notions and more often than not you can see some level of genuine shock at how much more they like at least parts. Ive always tried to do that but seeing how effective it is has made me more often try and apply that open view to everything.

That comment at around 5:20, reading the lyrics is key to liking Metallica IMO. I also sat through about an hour of it at a party- it grows on you so fast if you are around it.

Great stuff! Been to a lot of their concerts and its a lot .ore than 4 songs. Lightweight one you are. You leave cleansed of rage and totally drained, went into the mosh pit and u left with more than that. Thanks

Good catch with how the music correlates with the lyrics. If you notice this song is composed into 3-4 sections. 1) aggressive start as the drug (master) is calling the puppet, 2)slow melodic part as the puppet takes the drug and enters euphoria, 3) aggressive out of control solo as the drug wears off and the need to have more comes. 4) back to the cycle from which the beginning happens.

I remember as a young kid driving with my best friend to Tower Records in San Francisco to get this album the moment it was released. We bought it on CD and Album. Listening to it for first time on Bay Bridge Coming Home to El Sobrante which happens to be where the lead guitarist lived at the time. Anyway....

I'm starting the deep dive into your reaction videos, and I gotta say, watching your discovering those bands made me realize a good reason why I have been struggling to discover new music in the last 20 years. You point it out yourself: this stuff was so impactful, meaningful, ground breaking. I was spoiled listening to that music when I was a teen. What there any music put out there in the last 2 decades that hit you as hard as this shit? Commenters, let me know if I missed anything, but I've been trying and the field has looked very tame for a very long time now, IMO...

*smiles* Since you mentioned lyrics. This is lyrically tied to a four song set. All on the same album, Begins with Leper Messiah, continues again with Damage Inc. Then Puppets, and finally Welcome Home (sanitarium)

Sad but True is my favourite song. I didn't see them in concert until about 5 years ago. I was way at the end of the coliseum but they played so loud and hard the vibrations went up through the floor and left my ears ringing for hours afterwards. I hope to see them again this summer!
