My Dad was 73 when he first heard Metallica, I was having a party and he came for a visit. Creeping Death came on and he was disappointed that my stereo wouldn't go louder and trust me, I had a pretty dope system ! He'd be 97 if he was still alive today.... never too old to hear and appreciate new music! Btw, Creeping Death is a pure Old Testament song... Dad had no idea of that just loved the power and quality of the music. Before hearing this he was mostly into 50's C & W, classical and clarinet!

I get that totally. I'm a 66 year old grandmother and was just introduced to that band a few years ago by my two sons who are metal musicians. Enter Sandman is great, but my actual favorite is Unforgiven, that song just resonates with me.

Was going to bring this up also.. Polo, you seem genuinely impressed with Metallica.... To fill in ANY blanks.. Ask this- WHO could bring 1.6 million people together? Yeah.. Metallica did it.. As you like to do.. research it first.. then watch it.. It's the definition of impressive and awesome. Also.. not sure if you have watched the Sanitarium video. That also hits a lot of the things you have commented on while watching Metallica. Anyway.. Welcome to the family. I appreciate your take and open-mindedness. You see things a lot like me.. I am a 'bit' older than you.. but like you, I get MORE open-minded as I get older... instead of more set in my ways. Life's good! Rock on.

That "tribal" sound of drums at the beginning was created by Lars replacing the customarily used high-hat with that of a floor tom to keep time. For non-drummers: The "high-hat" is what is generally used by drummers to keep the time. Along with the bass drum and snare, the high-hat is the most notable accoutrement. It consists of two small cymbals that are held face-to-face on a short pole/stick through the center of them. The left foot controls a pedal that toggles how much space is between the two cymbals. Pushing the foot down (closed), pushes the cymbals together creating a solid clack sound. By slightly lifting the foot, it creates a little space (open); they're still touching, but just lightly, so striking it gives a "sizzle" as one vibrates against the other - often times down in a sequence of say every fourth hit. (You can REALLY hear that sizzle in most of Van Halen songs - Alex Van Halen uses a lot of sizzle in his craft). The drummer keeps time by rhythmically striking (usually his right hand) against the downturned cymbal usually 8 or 16 times in each measure while then alternating between bass and snare drums to fill in the rest of the measure. In Enter Sandman, after the big beat drop in the intro, Lars reverts to the high-hat timing for the bulk of the song - only to return to the tom "tribal" sound in the bridge (the prayer before the final chorus) and the outro.

Hi Polo, so glad to see you enjoy decrypting our favorite songs ! :) Allow me to make a quick suggestion : play STUDIO versions of Metallica's (and other bands') songs. It will do them more Justice (For All) in my opinion. Even though concerts are awesome to watch and even more to attend... they don't always do notes and beats right (unless you're talking about an album like S&M and in particular the song Ecstasy of Gold.) Very often, "real" bands and solo artists capture the true meaning of their art isolated from ambient noise and bathed in the pure instrumental rendition of their thoughts. Really enjoyed your comments, Good luck to you, stay safe ! p.s. WAH !!! I've just realized that I was commenting on your Nothing Else Matters impressions... here. woops, my bad ! hahah

And I agree with you 100%... my appreciation for different music has expanded significantly with age. If nobody has recommended it yet... watch the 1991 Metallica concert (or at least Enter Sandman) in Moscow Russia. The size of the crowd was just... mind boggling. This song came off the "Black" album, the album after "And Justice For All". The songs were a bit simpler and shorter. The semi truck scene was probably based on his father. His dad left the family ( I think when James was in his early teens); he happened to be a truck driver, and James felt he abandoned them. Then his mom developed cancer. She didn't seek treatment because she was Christian Scientist, leaving James and his sister without parents. So, he had a lot of pain associated with his parents.

The entire world knows this song, doesn't matter what age really. Of all the covers done to E/S, the one Metallica chose to include on the Black List LP and is the very first track, is from the 3 sisters from Mexico, and one singer from Canada, mixed by legendary producer David Bendeth. "The Warning" with "Alessia Cara" sharing the vocals, for a re-imagined version is simply stunning, and an instant masterpiece. The official video is mesmerizing! ⚡

@7:10 MAD props to you for spotting that difference. That's the Bob Rock effect. Bob Rock was the music producer that they hired for this album - who helped the band release a more "corporate rock" radio friendly album. It soared the band into the stratosphere of popularity and wealth, but unfortunately it was divisive to many of their previous fans who saw this album as a "sell out" or at least - the beginning of the sell out that really came on the next album - further dividing when they cut their hair short etc. Regardless - as a long time Metallica fan since long before this album, I will say this - the album is fantastic. Absolutely. It's not the same as their previous albums as you certainly pointed out. If that album came out by any other band or was their first album for instance on it's own merit - it would be lauded as truly fantastic and worth the accolades and awards it received. Meaning it's better than most other bands best efforts. But it falls short of the excellence in composition, song-writing, arrangement etc that went in to their previous studio albums that their core fans fell in love with. So many of such people trash the album - not on it's own merit - but as a comparison.
@UncleUncleRj
@UncleUncleRj Год назад
I think even in comparison the Black Album does great - it just isn't Thrash Metal. It's an amazingly excellent heavy metal/hard rock album, but it's not thrash. And that's what a lot of fans expected. I was a fan even back in the 90's, and I considered Black to be a perfect album, and their best work. A lot of others did too at the time, but I think since the internet and social media, people started changing their minds and also saying "I always disliked the black album because they sold out", but hey, to each their own.

Wrong. Bob Rock had nothing to do with the song structure on this album, which is what he was talking about. Bob made no difference there. The basis of the songs were written before Bob was even their producer. Bob said himself he had nothing to do with arrangements, and knew they weren't going to let him have anything to do with that. He just worked on their sound and performance.
@Frostrazor
@Frostrazor 11 месяцев назад
@@Salomon_Gso he worked on their sound and performance but was not involved in their sound and performance. Got it. I didn't say he arranged it; i said he was a producer. To say he had no influence on the finished product is quite disingenuous to say the least. Watching the 4½ years in the life of Metallica video you can see some of Bob's interactions asking James to change up some of his "yah yahs" to try "mah-mah"s and use various sound effects in the studio etc. Furthermore by Polo's own explanation "the song was originally written about crib death....but the producers didn't like it....." So okay my guy, everyone's wrong.
@Salomon_G
@Salomon_G 11 месяцев назад
@@FrostrazorI never said Rock had no influence. I was saying the basis of what that album was, was there in the demos before Rock got involved. Whatever, I honestly didn't read the rest of what you said in the OP. Also, it was James' bandmates that didn't like his original Sandman lyrics.

My Mom was a rocker when I was growing up, so it never gave me creepy vibes, but I get it. When my son was in middle school, this was the intro pump song for them before they ran out on the football field. The guys and fans loved it. Lol

Sleeping and Dreaming was always a pleasurable escape for me. It was the Waking world that was fucking terrifying for me as a child.

MUST WATCH: Enter Sandman LIVE IN MOSCOW. Check out the history behind that video! “The young challenged the old” and helped thwart a coup attempt by hardliner communists. They stood in front of tanks and shit. Their leaders asked them what they wanted for “saving us all”. And they said WE WANT METALLICA. Until then, American rock could only be heard on illegal bootleg tapes. The Russian government FLEW METALLICA to Moscow. And that shit was INSANE. You HAVE to watch it. It’s a moment like NO OTHER! Thanks Polo! It’s so much fun watching your journey. ❤️☮️🎶

There are 2 versions of the sandman. The good version is the sandman comes and sprinkles magic sand in your eyes and makes you sleepy The second is the story that most here that if you don't go to sleep the sandman is going to get you ( sandman aka the boogie man ) . And that's what the song dictates is the boogie man sandman . So sleep with one eye open so he can't get you.
