I like the subtlety on the Orion captain's face. He hears that his people won't always be pirates. He likely long accepted that he will never be seen as anything but an Orion pirate and was given the greatest gift he could have received in being told Orions will eventually escape that stigma.
@@hfar_in_the_sky the Canadian actor did a great job with the character. Been a fan of his since ReGenesis 2004, thats if you like ultra mellow Canadian drama.
@@CommanderZoom Not just credit...but official ACKNOWLEDGEMENT that there is more to the Orions than denigrating stereotypes. To be taken SERIOUSLY as scientists...
"They put that on the poster?" delivery killed me. Everything Number One has been through in trying to prove herself in Starfleet, the affirmation she must've felt in that moment. Beautifully acted by Romijn
And yet even during their time, genetically modified people are still persecuted. Julian Bashir was almost kicked out of Starfleet because of it. Unless the law changed between DS9 and Lower Decks, she's sadly just being used as a token.
It was a double whamy for Boimler as he got a wink and a smile from Number 1 right before that. I also loved the expression on Mariner's face when Spock said that.
He felt a bit creepy saying it, which is in-character for him. But it makes it better knowing that the two actors are married in real life so they can jest at each other in-universe.
Ransom calling Una to hottest first officer is so great! Love how they worked in a way for Jerry O Connells character to call his real life wife hot in universe.
Twice has the Vulcan salute choked me up...the first was when Sarek struggled to say it to Picard for the last time in Unification, and now this one. When the Lower Decks theme started and Boimler was left speechless...oh man, the feels
Spock's "Live long and Prosper" to Kirk during the his death scene in "The Wrath of Khan". I've seen it countless times over the last 40 years, but it breaks me every time.
You must be a Millennial then only a smooth brain would think that is a line worthy of praise. Then again when a whole generation has turned out to be trash maybe that should their tag line
Pretty sure the ship's narrative irony sensors burned out when she said that. You can't really burn down your own career on a whim and then complain about what you've done with your life.
Everything in this scene screamed happiness. Una learning how cherished she is in the future, Boilmer getting vulcan salute from Spock, Mariner being totally stocked for her friend knowing how much it means to him even the Orion learning his people will start to move beyond what they are known for. Just allround such a feel good scene
My great grandma is legendary in my family. I inherited her name and the ceramic rooster she gifted to her daughter and then to her daughter’s daughter and etc. I’d be proud to meet her, just like Boimler with his heroes.
Imagine the mess if it had been Tendi and Rutherford that had stepped through. An Orion ensign and a cyborg thats a walking temporal anachronism with his tech and his programmed abilities....
The REAL Temporal Prime Directive: "Starfleet Officers who time travel back to the Enterprise in the 23rd Century must resist any and all urges to bang Spock and/or Uhura." Guess who failed which. ;)
I wonder if they planed this crossover all along, since they selected actors that actually could also play their characters. Usually it's not uncommon for voice actors to be older or not even the same gender, since some are extremely good at creating different voices. Also they speak usually different in animated series. Tawny Newsome is certainly at least a decade older than Mariner is supposed to be, but it still was totally fine. I also liked, that they adjusted their voices a little to let them sound more like a "real" person.
The trend nowadays is for voice actors to roughly match the ethnicity and likeness of the character they are playing (if they're human). It's the new PC environment created by accusations of "cultural appropriation" whitewashing and all that. So it's not that surprising that they happened to be perfect for the transition. The height difference is weird though; Ransom and Shaxs would be huge because they tower over Boimler and Mariner.
From what I've heard they intentionally designed the characters to look similar to their VAs in the chance that one day they'd be used in a live-action episode. Though not necessarily SNW.
@@Fletchman1313 To be fair, Ransom (O'Connel) is actually taller than Boimler(Quaid) irl... not by much, but the cartoon could be explained away as exaggerating their heights. No idea on Shax, though I'm guessing he's not that tall XD
@@3Rayfire XD I mean, I wouldn't even care about the heights as long as they're the rough equivalent of what their characters look like. I was not prepared for how on the nose Mariner and Boimler were XD
Strange new worlds is the best Star Trek show rigth now alongside Picard season 3 . I hope in the future the franchise continues with this kinds of stories 🖖🖖🖖 .
@@Cowcow211 Picard Season 3 should really be its own separate series, like a mini-series. While the season was excellent, I would agree that Picard was "trash", as you described it (and I think you're going easy on them.) There was no saving the first two seasons, there was nothing that could redeem the series as a whole.
@@Cowcow211 Have to agree, the whole thing was full of plot holes and temporal paradoxes. As for resurrecting the Enterprise D, that filled me with disgust at it's stupidity. How did Geordie KNOW to rework it so a handful of people could run that massive ship??? And to be blunt, the ST:TNG cast are way too old to be believable. As Kirk said in ST2, Gallivanting around the cosmos is a game for the young. And he was absolutely right, Patrick Stewart looked like he was ready to keel over any second. The whole series was trash and an obvious effort to milk a dead cow. Only Jeri Ryan looked like she was in her prime.
@@spilchsaysstuff1427 And at least PIC S2 had some interesting ideas even if it failed to craft a good story with them. S3 just made me wish I was watching all of the better episodes and movies that it lifted all its ideas from instead.
0:20 - 0:45 Would've been nice to hear the "First Contact" theme from here until around the moment Boimler mentions "Ad Astra per Aspera," since the theme is the unofficial Starfleet anthem which also best reflects "to the stars through difficulties" motto 🖖🖖
Iunno, if you listen where Boimler starts saying "Ad Astra," it plays a slowed down version of *the* Star trek leitmotif. The one that's kicks off the TOS/TNG/SNW theme, ends the new series' star trek logos, and were the opening notes of Prodigy episode 1. not to say that the FC theme is bad or anything, but I think this is a good way to musically affirm that Una is starfleet through and through.
I always thought Boimler’s hair color was an art style choice to make him stand out more. But it’s still purple in live action. Does he have alien dna in him? He doesn’t strike me as someone who dyes his hair.
He does dye his hair. There's a line in the bit where they're going through his personal logs to see if they can use them to exonerate carol in her trial over the Pakled bombing where he mentions it.
@@theyux1 Hey computer, replicate me some purple hair gel that lasts a month and takes a minute to apply Yeah when you can assemble shit molecule by molecule it'd be dead easy to come up with dream formulas that do incredible things
That is very true. Though they could get the guy that voiced Ambassador Spock for Star Trek: Resurgence, if they did. He was so spot on, I thought it was an AI generated voiceover from sound sampling.
Here come the people commenting asking why Boimler didn't know how to say the line right when he said it correctly earlier in the episode. It's called nerves friends. He's clearly nervous.
@@blackdemonknight Honestly, if there was some kind of weird inter*dimensional* portal thingy going on in real life and I ran into the actual Spock, I'd probably flub the greeting, too.
Boimler is the kind of person who gets nervous asking the replicator for a sandwich, the fact he could even speak actual words in the past is an accomplishment.
This clip contains the one continuity slip-up I noticed, here it is: when Boimler is beginning transport he quickly raises his hand with the matching Vulcan "live long" V hand salute, then we immediately see the landing party materialize on the planet and Boimer's arm is not up in the salute like it should have still been. I know, nit-picky, but just saw it again in this clip... very possible the salute scene was shot later and the salute might have been an improvised thing...
I noticed that as well actually. One of those nitpicks where I know it's an error but don't care toooo much, old trek is bonkers full of errors like that
Transporters often reset body positions to default standing. People get teleported off exploding ships all the time and they never show up in a seated position.
They should do the animated series version of Star Trek: Strange New World because Star Trek: Lower Deck is becoming successful so it wouldn't hurt to do another animated series version of Star Trek.
Wait wouldn't this cause temporal investigations to get involved like with Sisko? Since it was previously established that the Orions discovered the time portal this is what temporal investigations hates. Pre-destination paradox.
Sure, a society with a government that values piracy and slavery isn't dangerous to leave a perfectly functioning time machine with, albeit low on fuel... Some of the scientists might hope for a future beyond piracy and slavery but you can be certain that some in the government would see otherwise.
I feel like there's something always subtly off whenever the writers of these shows try to tackle the racism (speciesism?) and prejudice felt by the Orions. Like in 3x06, it makes the prejudice felt by the Ohio Orion entirely an issue of self-perception. Which, yeah, but it makes it more HIS fault. His fault that the only cultural touchstones he had access to were negative stereotypes. His fault that everyone apparently felt discomfort when he WASN'T acting more like a pirate, which led him towards adopting the persona. (He only points out that everyone expected him to act like that, but expectations of others don't normally affect your behavior unless it's made aware that you're not living up to what they expect in some way.) And here, the outpost WAS discovered by Starfleet. It'd have backed up Tendi's point and discomfort if it actually was the Orion vessel that did... anything to discover it, or if there were markings of their research before Starfleet got there, but nope.... it's just pure historical revisionism to make the "lesser" race feel accepted. And not only that, but based on Boimler knowing the truth before the episode, it was a promise they broke pretty soon after making it. I do genuinely love both shows, but it just feels like whenever they try to identify how prejudice might affect the characters that it's... not their strong suit.
The landing party returns to the Cerritos transporter room and we're about to return to their quarters when Mariner stays a bit Mariner: You guys go on ahead. I'll catch up. (The others left leaving Mariner alone with her ex girlfriend Jennifer Sh'reyan who was on transporter duty. Mariner sigh: Look, Jen before you say anything I want you to know that I don't wanna get back together with you. Because I loved you Jen, and you broke my heart when you turned your back on me like everyone else except for Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford because they're my friends but I needed you the most by my side and your weren't there. Though I will never again trust you with my heart... That doesn't mean I don't trust you with my life. When we first met, we use to hate each other and honestly I don't want us to go back to that. Remember when we went to rescue the Archimedes from crashing and wiping out the Lapeerian, you risked your own life on that debris field to save mine and i can't hate you for that. How could I hate someone who risked their life to save someone despite their differences knowing they'll have your back on the task at hand as you or I would for them? What I'm saying Jen is I would like for us is to just be friends. Jen smiled: I like that too. As Mariner leaves Jen: Wait. (Mariner turns around to look at her again curiously) I am honored to serve with you on this ship, Ensign Beckett Mariner Freeman. (Jen reaches out her hand to shake it professionally) Mariner smiles and reaches out her hand as well and the two woman shook: And I am honored to serve with you as well, Ensign Jennifer Sh'reyan. (Mariner leaves to meet with her friends)
Think I’m in the minority that I didn’t care for the episode. It seemed a cheap “crossover event” and while the episode wasn’t bad in the sense it was poorly made or scripted, it just felt superfluous and without any real motivation toward the larger story arc.
The biggest trouble I have with this is IF you have never seen ST:Lower decks, it will mean absolutely nothing to you. And personally I prefer The Doctor's explanations of time travel. You cannot change your own past, because if you could, you would have done so. If you can make changes to what you know, you have bounced into a different reality. Also where the hell are the 29th century time police? writers always forget them unless their story demands they appear. Totally ridiculous and treats the audience as if we are idiots.
Not sure which doctor you mean. The hologram is a hologram and he probably doesn’t remember year of hell and the end of the show unless that means we’ve been watching like a five times offshoot of whatever “original timeline” there was. If you mean The Doctor, then time isn’t linear and he’s shown up to mess with Mary Shelly all on the same night like 5 times over
The time police have said they only correct things that weren't able to be fixed by any other means. As for Lower Decks, you really should watch it. I hated it for the first 3 or 4 episodes, but it grew on me and now i like it.
@@creed8712 the hologram is the doctor, small letters. The Doctor is of course our favorite time lord and as David Tennant's doctor said, if he could go back and save Gallifrey he would, but he can't, Though they did a sneaky work around it.
@@johnfisher9692 the time war was a complicated endeavor. It occurred at every point in time and the presumption was that what the doctor had done itself was some sort of temporal shenanigans or that because Galifrey is as it is that it would be sorta outa normal spice like new Genisis
Why is it near impossible to find anyone in modern media who behaves even halfway mature. Its a constant barrage of 13 year old immaturity. Writers seem incapable of writing an adult character anymore.
So in Season 5 or 6 there needs to be a two part episode on Lower Decks Where Pike, Una and La'An are in a shuttle craft and get propelled into the future they become animated and run into who else the Cerritos. As they try to get them back, Captain Freeman and Pike bond over command and of course gets jealous as he is very comfortable referencing Boimler and Mariner , Una literally has Ransom hitting on her as much as humanly possible but its Boimler and Rutherford who grabs her attention when she is touring and sees the poster in his bunk referencing conversation from the 1st cross over, and La'An bonding with Tendi and T'lyn as they've been put in charge of researching possible ways to send them back.
I don’t even have streaming and only saw ep1 season1 on RU-vid. I am going through all the clips. Never even watched Lower Decks. But I know good when I see it.
@rafaeloda Same here - wasn't overly keen on it, and only watched the first 2 episodes. Now having seen this one, I think that I will have to give it another go... 😊
My personal favorite scene is when they mention that D'Vanna is their friend and an Orion officer/ scientist and is also known as "Mistress of the Winter Constellation " and the orion captain is freaking out. The final kicker is when Boimler asks " her name is Tendi" and the captain is just flabbergasted.
@@bishop51807 Given this information, it seems quite possible that Tendi's family only very recently got into piracy. Given the name, they might have been explorers of the stars at first and maybe that's why Tendi is extremely sensitive about it since it might be just her father and her that were but now, that's all anyone knows her family for.
@@benwasserman8223 Not only that, but the title is so bad-ass that it's mere mention causes Orions to stop, listen, and pay attention. And it's inter-generational.
@@bishop51807 Beta canon indicates that Orion civilization is actually super old, like has risen to be a great power and crashed into fallen failed states several times. So you could have a bunch of bloodlines of Orion dynasties that no longer have anything to rule over, but still remember being royalty. To say nothing about intimidating titles from the Orion Syndicate. Just more eloquent and flowery than just being called Scarface.
It is his delivery. Just like if you look at Anson in the background of the episode that aired last week(July 13), Anson with his reactions are hysterical
He's like the put-upon dad whose teenage kids keep bringing more and more friends over for a sleep over. And while for the most part the friends are polite, its still chaotic for his tastes (Boys all brought their laptops for late night gaming and are all cursing for getting killed, girls are screaming and playing Taylor Swift karaoke) and he's looking forward to getting back to his evening routine of calm-ish stuff.
