I was having a little trouble with the left hand jumps and keeping the timing but I love the way you slowed it a bit and let it build and ring out instead of staying rigid with the timing. It might make the left hand part a bit less daunting and also adds so much feeling.

Thanks so much Kaity! So much of Nicholas Britell’s soundtrack involves layers of piano parts (at least two pianos) plus the strings which creates this incredible depth and emotion… I wanted to honour that feeling with this arrangement but still make it possible to play. I didn’t want it to sound or feel thinned out or watered down. I love arranging even though i drive myself crazy during the process haha … every tiny decision feels so important… but then there are these little “eureka” moments like when I realized the right hand could cross over and play those Fs starting in bar 17 which i didn’t want to leave out. Anyway I hope you enjoy learning and playing it. I loved working on it.

yes I think you can steal a millisecond from the metronome to let your left hand sink into those deep bass octaves before making the jump … they bring depth and richness to it … and once you practice the left hand part alone the jumps will get easier! Slow practice always helps! But ALSO … a trick I learned … when you are increasing the tempo to your desired one … go beyond it … actually try to play it faster than you want to … even if you can’t do it… that way when you go back to the slower tempo you actually want it feels easier because your brain has tried to process everything faster … it always works for me. If your goal is to play something at 120bpm … practice it at 100 … then 104 then 108 and so on … but when you get to 116 … do 120 next and THEN 124 and try 128 as well … then when you go back to 120 your mind will relax and feel like “this is a walk in the park compared to 128” .. take pressure off your goal by casually moving beyond it 😊

I also felt super emotional while playing it - it's really powerful music ... it's like it's haunted by the ghost of Beethoven in the same way those Roy kids are haunted by the looming shadow of their dad. Nicholas Britell did a fantastic job with this score. So amazing how it just surges underneath everything and drives the whole series.

This is amazing. Sir, this is an excellent solo cover of a piece that sounds as if it was made for two pianos. Andante Risoluto has a certain finality to it, which you truly captured in this. Absolutely looking forward to your sheet music. Great work

Yes … in the original version I can hear 2 pianos (at least) plus the amazing string orchestra… I did my best to arrange it for two hands without losing the emotions in it! @@PaulHankinsonMusic I feel the same way whenever I'm playing any of the Andantes by Britell... quite easy at the beginning but gets increasingly hard to play each new layer of melody, to the point I simply give up playing all of them at the same time. You, however, succeeded! And I thought it would be a while before anyone would post a good, or even a decent cover of this wonderful piece.

Luis I feel like I’d like to be friends 😊 - I worked hard on this arrangement to try not to lose any elements that felt essential … like the Fs which provide that kind of slow heartbeat pedal point under the section which begins at 1:22 .. the hands share those and it’s kind of fun to play that bit … it’s not the easiest arrangement - but it’s the kind of work I really LOVE doing - so nice that you appreciate it - I’d love to hear you play too - do you also compose/arrange?

They really add to the rythm, maybe it's a bit far-fetched but they remind me a bit of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit II, "Le Gibet" I have just subscribed to your channel. I play the piano, and have composed / arranged a couple of times, but it seems you're quite a bit more experienced. It'd be lovely to chat about the music of this show or anything music related. F for FATE maybe ... there's something about the way they prevent the beautiful harmonic sequence which has been established from ... staying beautiful... they kind of trap it... lock it in ... they have their grip on it... do you know what I mean? Is F minor the original key of this piece? I haven't seen the TV series, but everything I've heard from it using this theme has been in C minor.

yes this piece is in F minor … you’re right that almost the entire soundtrack is C minor (obviously based on Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonate but weirdly never acknowledged) … but F minor was also used sparingly and poignantly … it’s a great soundtrack - even if Ludwig van B didn’t get his co-write credit 😅

Yes, it does remind me of the Pathetique - although like most modern soundtracks, there is less melodic content and there is more of a theme and variations style of development. It sounds like some of the piano-only pieces use two pianos sometimes - making arrangements pretty challenging! Thanks again, I'll give this one a try!

oh thank you so much! It's a Yamaha P121 with the SH Silent System (so the built in sample I'm using as a CFX Yamaha Concert Grand) ... I also work on the audio post-recording in Pro Tools - adding some reverb and EQ. The piano is also (most of the time) a very dear friend haha.

The original track is two piano parts (both easy to play) layered on top of each other (so it’s 4 hands playing plus the strings) … For this arrangement I’m trying to play as much of the music as I can on one piano with 2 hands… so forgive me if it’s a little slower but my left hand is going as fast as he can 😅 … I’m just a tribute band 😁
