Andean Plying Technique for Handspinners

This is a way of making a two-ply yarn out of one source of singles. By wrapping the single onto your hand this way, you can then access the beginning end, and proceed to ply from the "bracelet" of yarn on your wrist. NOTE: I wrap the yarn with the cross on the PALM of my hand, to avoid cutting off circulation on my finger. Be sure you don't wind tightly - leave some wiggle room!

Thanks so much for this video and the pdf drawings. The tip to turn the ring to the top of the wrist is genius! I never heard anyone say this before and I can’t wait to try it.

Thank you so much for this video! I've been using it to finish off odd ends of singles and it works great!

I love this video! So very helpful. I purchased my combs from your store and I was thrilled to find you have demos on RU-vid. Please keep up these informative videos. We new spinners need them. Thank you.

OH MY, you did a wonderful job. I liked the way you talked and I really appreciated that you didn't spend loads of time explaining. You got right to the demonstration and explained as you demonstrated. I like that method and think you did a terrific job!

Great video, I like the way you wrap the singles on your hand. It looks more comfortable than having the cross on the back of the hand. Can't wait to try!

Thank you so much for this very helpful and clear instruction. I often end up with small lengths of spun yarn on a spool after plying, which I can now ply this way. Love how your yarn matches your shirt 😄

Just stumbled upon this! Wonderful technique. You mentioned that you did 4 ounces. Had you wrapped the entire 4 ounces on your hand, or did you join small amounts along the way? If that's the case, do you have a video on how to join them? Thank you so much!
@AndreaSchroer
@AndreaSchroer 5 лет назад
I wrapped the whole 4 ounces at one time, but periodically pulled the yarn off my finger and put it around my wrist, so it was separated into small sections. Trying to put all four ounces over my finger is pushing the limits of what is comfortable. :-)

Thanks so much for your instructional video's. I love that they're concise and clear both visually and verbally: you're a wonderful teacher. I just started trying to spin 3 days ago, using a drop spindle. I don't have any other tools, so I will use your foot-skein technique and might try to ply my singles onto the drop spindle using this Andean demo as a guide. Question: when you say to let the singles relax and set for a few days before plying, do you mean: relaxing in a skein (my first small trial singles are currently in balls), and does 'set' mean the singles have to be washed in skeins as singles before plying? Many thanks
@AndreaSchroer
@AndreaSchroer 5 месяцев назад
I let the singles set on the bobbin. It doesn't have to be done, it just makes the singles less likely to twist back on themselves, so plying is less frustrating. If you are spinning on a spindle, I would recommend winding the singles off the spindle and into a ball. Either around a tennis ball, or a ball of felt for the center, to speed the process up (starting from the very center with yarn can be tedious). Then after they have some time to set in ball form, you can ply off the balls and back onto your spindle. Best wishes for happy spinning!

Thanks Andrea, much appreciated! I never (in the knitting world) heard about winding a ball around a tennis ball @@AndreaSchroer

The way you wind the yarn, your middle finger will bend forward in the end. If you make the loops at the back of your hand that won't happen.
@AndreaSchroer
@AndreaSchroer Год назад
If the loops are at the back of the hand, the yarn will put pressure on the finger, pulling it backwards - this has caused quite a bit of discomfort and even pain for some folks. Loops on the front are much more comfortable, and allow the hand and fingers to be in a more natural state.

camera in wrong place so the initial maneuver cannot be seen. Then you move your hands waaay to fast... and then your hand is again below the camera position. VERY frustrating and nearly useless instructions. ALAS!

@etm567 6 лет назад
Worthless demonstration because at the beginning your hand was off camera. I learned to do this years ago and need brushing up but I guess I'll get it somewhere else, like perhaps where I learned to do it in the first place. How hard can holding your hand up be?
@AndreaSchroer

Ellen McGuffie I am sorry - this was the first video I ever did for RU-vid, and I was literally doing the filming myself. My hand is only off screen for a brief moment, though, and I do explain verbally exactly what I am doing the whole time. I also added a link in the description to a pdf illustrating the path of the singles on the hand.

I apologize for being testy. I was being very bad tempered, I think due to impatience. I am a terribly impatient person. Sorry.
