Really hammers home Kino's idea that 'we are already dead'. In particular, it reminds me of a certain scene from V for Vendetta. "And they took everything, until all you had left was your life. And you believed that, didn't you? That your life was all you had left. But it wasn't everything... was it. In that cell you found something that mattered more to you than life. Because when they threatened to kill you for what you know, you told them to do it. You faced your death Evie. You were calm. You were still. Try to feel now what you felt then." As Maarva puts it, life is only worth LIVING whilst there are things that matter more to you than preserving it. Friends, family, community, the future for those who come after. Planting trees whose shade you will never see.

What I love about Luthen in this episode is that he goes from determined to kill Andor - adhering to his "formula" written 15 years ago - to listening to Maarva's speech, seeing how the people of Ferrix react to it and realising that this is what his rebellion was missing; rather than using the tactics of his enemy, fighting in the dark, they also need to fight openly in the light. To give people hope, to show how weak the empire really is when everyone stands up to them. That is why he slumps away. Not just for failing to catch Andor, but the realisation that maybe his formula will never been enough. Until Andor offers to join him. And he finally gives him hope and the first time Luthen gives a genuine smile in the whole series (On Corusant, he only smiled as a facade). That hope is what will carry us on to Season 2
@SwordTune
@SwordTune Год назад
The tools of his enemy is not fighting in the dark, it's compartmentalising and controlling information, treating people like pawns, and putting purpose over life. He leaves because there's nothing he can do now, and there is more work to be done to turn singular riots into a united rebellion.

I just finally realized "it was about wiping the taste of Aldani from the Emperor's mouth" is really showcasing how his own underlings fucked him over in the end. It's like the manifesto said earlier about tyranny being constant work. The Emperor himself, being the master player that he was, would never have let it drop if he had the full details they do as to Axis and Andor. He would have doggedly rooted them out until he was certain he had them. His people are doing the thing tyrannical managers constantly have done to them - hiding things from him and spoon-feeding him only what will make him content to leave them alone.

There really isn't any exposition. I tend to consider exposition any sort of explanation or such that doesn't actually fit the flow of events going on. Like, when a character stops and explains something you'd normally expect the others to already know, but he's "reminding" them or filling in blanks for them, and it's just weird. Everything that is said and done in Andor feels like it should've been said or done, that things would've occurred that way normally. Nothing breaks the flow. The tempo changes from time to time, but the flow is consistent. Nothing feels like they stopped to tell us something we didn't know. It's like Arcane...it's really just all show, no tell.

Mandalorian is always going to be more popular. It's storytelling is simpler (I don't mean that as a negative), the cast is smaller, the action is more bombastic and laced with the 'awesome'-factor, and it uses more of the traditional Star Wars iconography in more traditionalist ways (as opposed to Andor which for example very much subverted Stormtroopers by presenting them as a frightening upping of the Empire's threat rather than as faceless, hapless goons for our heroic death squad to slaughter stylishly). I'm glad we have both and it'd never surprise or concern me if and when I see that Mandalorian remains the franchise's breadwinner. Andor will always be more niche but by embracing that rather than trying to please the widest swathe of the population possible it can hit heights that Mando can only dream of. The cast is the real coup-de-grace here, Mando had some fine acting but also plenty of humdrum performances and few if any barnstormers. The most charismatic character is a puppet without any lines. Again, sorry, this sounds harsh on Mando, which isn't fair. As far as I can recall, this is only the second Star Wars film or show to ever bring in top tier actors. Episode 1 tried, with Neeson and Samuel L Jackson, but the PT writing let them down. Aside from that one moment we've never had known quantities like Serkis and Skarsgard come in to Star Wars, and while Fiona Shaw may be a somewhat less famous figure she's still unusually highly trained and experienced for Star Wars.

I think the key to the "should Star Wars going forward be more like this?" is that people are mixing up how adult and serious this series is with how insanely well written, acted, directed and designed it is. They are separate things. Obi Wan didn't need to be adult, gritty and dark to be amazing like Andor has been. What it needed was way better writers, a better showrunner, better directors, a better story and in the case of a few people, better actors. Same with Book of Boba. Same with every show. We've all watched Disney movies for kids that absolutely destroy us because they are so well written (Toy Story for example). And yet they are animated cartoons for kids. Star Wars can be the same, where stories for just adults (like Andor) and family friendly stories are produced at a high level in terms of quality. Then we get the best of both worlds, we get a variety of stories told in different ways but the quality is always at a high level. What we are sick and tired of, especially from Star Wars and Marvel on TV is mediocre writing, directing, showrunning, acting, FX (visual and special), sets and so on. Andor is such a breath of fresh air because all of those things are golden age S tier. Disney trying to ask us to watch Book of Boba tier shows again after Andor is too big of an ask. I refuse mediocrity. I'm more than happy to wait months if not years for more Star Wars (and Marvel) projects if it means they consistently are made at a high level like Andor was instead of being rushed and mediocre.

That is the point. The Disney+ SW series before (Mandalorian too) were lackluster to downright bad due to the writing and production. Thematically they obviously have a place, not every single SW piece should be like Andor. But the beauty of SW is that it is a setting in which several themes can have its place...as long as they a good written.

I’m curious, which better actors did we need? Bc from what I’m seeing, acting is not the problem with Star Wars shows, and neither is direction or set design or effects. We could debate the quality of the story written and structured but the technical side and performance side is rarely a problem with Star Wars content.

The grave mistake a lot of writers and some fandom are making for a long time is thinking "kids = dumb" ..its for kids so i can do whatever dumb shit i easily come with and its ok "because its for kids".. that was never true and its cheap excuse to write stupid stuff ..you can do amazing stuff for kids that adults will enjoy too.. A new hope its an example of that without even having to go other franchises...

I saw in the comments of another reaction video that not only was that one of Nemik's "small acts of rebellion," it was also a deliberate strategic move by Brasso. By rushing the funeral before the Empire told them to do it, they made the regent guy call for a show of force to compensate, almost completely emptying the hotel to flood the streets with soldiers. This left Bix almost completely unguarded for Cassian to get her out.

This has been, for me, the best SW product since Empire. Just incredible. The scene where Brasso replays Maarva's message to Cassian is so moving. From the way they embraced, you could feel the sorrow, the anguish, and the love they felt for Maarva and for each other. Then related what Maarva said, how he told Cassian, the way they both felt her words. That was some real $hit right there. This series has had some awesome monologues and here's how I rank them from 1-5 - Luthen: Sacrifice; Maarva: I love him more than anything he could ever do wrong; Nemik: Try; Maarva: Fight The Empire; Kino: One Way Out

The irony is also that a Jedi making a minor appearance in Andor would arguably be more powerful precisely because the show never uses them for cheap entertainment. Star Wars as a whole would be better if it actually treated Jedi like a treat that you only see occassionally like in the OT.

Especially because the rebellion was created by normal people. It was these people that fought to bring peace and hope back to the Galaxy. Not the Jedi.
@kyleenglot9184

The seeds and pieces of the rebellion began by the unassuming people of the Galaxy. The Jedi lost hugely during order 66. The remaining ones had to flee and hide or be pursued by the empire and their most bloodthirsty weapon which was Vader. Obi-wan and Yoda hid for years waiting for the time to come when they could enter the fight with Luke being old enough and hopefully strong enough to be the final nail in the defeat of Palpatine. But Luke, Leia and Han wouldn't have been able to do it all without the solid backing of the rebel Alliance started long before they got involved.

"And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire's authority, and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this. Try." I love how these lines from Nemik's manifesto serve the dual purpose of motivating Andor in the story and addressing the audience by alluding to Luke's journey and what Yoda would tell him on Dagobah. While Nemik would never know what the final nail in the Empire's plans would be, we as the audience know it's Luke. Andor was the spark which lit the Rebellion and Luke carried it across the finish line.

This has been an excellent series, which really needs to be looked at not episode by episode but as a well-written novel. With that said, each episode has so many emotional moments to enjoy. In this episode, one moment that warmed my heart was Cassian and Brasso's hug in the tunnel. Clearly, Cassian needed that hug. He has been thru hell. He learns that his mom has died and is feeling the pain and guilt of her loss. He barely managed to escape the prison, but it's not lost on him that Kino and many others likely did not make it. But he is home now and is greeted by a friend who gives him the firm embrace he needs. He needed that recharge of the genuine love of family and community he had been missing. Cassian keeps so much of his pain hidden that he needs to let go and cry for all he has been through. But short of that, Brasso's hug lifted him to a point where he needed to prepare for his next battle.

Not sure if it's just me, but I don't think Nemik's "try" line was necessarily meant to go against Yoda's "Do or do not" line. On the surface I can see why one may think that, as Yoda specifically says not to try; however, I believe Yoda and Nemik are actually preaching the same message. When Yoda says "there is no try" he's not talking about a physical action, but more so a mental state. When Luke says he'll give it [lifting the X-Wing] a try, there's a clear sense of doubt and uncertainty in his voice. He doesn't believe that he can actually do it, and thus is unable to ("I don't believe it" - "That is why you fail").The idea of "doing" simply means going into something with the belief that you will succeed despite all the odds. You either succeed or you fail, and if you fail, you just go at it again. And Nemik is more or less saying the same thing (which also ties into Maarva's speech). The reason the Empire is able to reach as far as it wants is because people are unwilling to do anything, to react; there's a large sense of doubt when thinking of confronting such a massive force. Nemik and Maarva are both aware of this, and they realize that the only way to push forward is to actually take action with the belief that they can make a change, regardless of the odds.

It actually rivals Shakespeare in its tone, depth, humanity and the depths of human depravity in a way Shakespeare never could. Its a ten out of ten best series of the year by miles and miles. it has earned its place as the best-acted, written and executed star wars project ever.
