The Bernstein version and the Previn version each have something special to offer, this is such a great composition, can never tire of it.

This is the best Gershwin I have ever listened to, even better than Gershwin himself. I like others playing Gershwin, too, but this guy was so close and so distant from the original Gershwin,,, In a way... I don't know... Just great, almost perfect. That's the point.

He has the guts to play it his way, listen when he "restarts" it all after about 14 minutes, technically demanding, but he play syncopated and playful. He never leaves jazz, regardless of the other comments. Here he is also very different to Leonard Bernstein, a trifle faster beat. He is true to Gershwin.

R.I.P. André Previn... a genius

Like Gershwin and Bernstein it was very easy to be jealous of the multi-talented Previn. There were many people who could not abide with the fact that he was a pianist, a conductor, and a composer; that's just too much talent for any one person, or so they thought. Like most geniuses he wasn't too good in the relationship department, but we'll leave that discussion to his five wives and many lovers. Rest in peace, Andre.

I'm not really trying to drop facts, but, I remember this very piano, and there was one in the building at the time that would have been more appropriate to the piece (more guts in the bass), but Maestro Previn is more knowledgeable and experienced than I. Just an opinion.

Like Bernstein's version(s), Previn's is too smooth and civilized. Sort of like Karen Carpenter's singing. Pretty but dull. The Rhapsody needs a less worked out, more spontaneous feel. Where's the jazz, Previn?

Gershwin said himself he was a classical composer lol. This is Gershwins American Rhapsody in blue, a classical composition composed in a jazz idiom. I have performed this piece myself and I think he combined a wonderful balance of romanticism without betraying the original intent and spirit of the piece. He put himself into it which is what's really special. All the haters say to just play it "correct" like Oscar Levant, fuck that. I played it too romantically but Andre really did something special and unique here.
