Actually, Drew's question is one that everyone should answer for themselves. It speaks to how one was or wasn't impacted by Billie Holiday's truth. Lady Day's fight is still very relevant today since the anti-lynching bill was NOT passed on the Senate floor last year in 2020.

Thank you Andra Day for your tenacious commitment to bringing light to a multi-complex personality, so that people could feel her humanity. This was an informative movie against a delicious artistic back-drop. The blend of the artist and the activist, the frustration of being both in the box of a society that says u have to choose!! OR DIE!!!!! Andra & Lee did a phenomenal job of Ms Holiday's portrayal. And I also love the way how Andra Day is always so humble, down to earth, and REAL in all her interviews.

Yes, but Andra commented that she started drinking real alcohol and smoking real cigars leading up to those scenes, to help her mentally prepare and understand her moods and addictions... and to even help with capturing Billie’s voice (she mentioned that last part in another interview).

@@joshuagilmore7206 I think she said she did her research for 2 or 3 years. Not sure when she started the smoking and drinking. If it was for the whole 2 or 3 years or just a year or a few months before. And she said she practices abstinence from sex, so she isn't as sexual as she portrayed in the movie. She did a great job.

Been a fan of Billie Holliday's since I was a kid and fully began to really understand her lyrics and meanings of her songs. I have been a fan of Andra Day for several years and when it was announced that Andra was going to play her I was very excited and now I am looking forward to watching this film! Andra's performance of Billie was so amazing, so amazing, poignant, depressing, it went to my soul.. But it makes sense when you here how much time (2 years) and effort (going from not drinking to drinking and smoking regularly, from abstinent to embodying a sexual/sensual person, and shout out her acting coach Tasha Smith who deserves so many flowers for the work she does behind the scenes), it makes her mind-blowing portrayal understandable because she put in the WORK and sacrifice to honor a LEGEND. I too read many autobiographies books on billie holiday and was very empathetic on what she been through all her life.I would read lots of material that I can get my hands on.I was always fascinated by her life and story.I even saw the first movie about her when Diana Ross play her along with other stars like billie dee Williams.

This movie totally caught me off guard , i was unaware of the struggles of billie holiday and her traumatic childhood, but the respect she garnered not only by the black community, but the throngs of white people all over the world, she is a wonder! I am in awe of Andra days performance, as well as the supporting cast, i was touched by this movie in part that i am african american and i am a recovering drug addict, i have experienced the hopelessness and the horrors of addiction, it was a struggle for her because she was so famous! she was hurting so bad because of the treatment of of her people and her raging desire for drugs, to help her cope with all of her pain!
