And now Nadal is older than Agassi was in this match 🤯 Time really does fly. And like Agassi here, Nadal will soon be heading for the exit. We never know what we had until it's gone, do we?
If I'm not mistaken, Agassi is the only man to achieve a "Career Super Slam" (winning the four Grand Slam tournaments, an Olympic gold medal, the Davis Cup and the ATP World Tour Finals). What a legend he was.
@Milorad Djurdjic Rafa has 1 less grand slam than Joker as 2 of the 4 GS are played on hard court which is favorable to joker imagine it would be 2 GS on clay like earlier and no excuses on the injury to the left hander who was not there when joker had no challege by a top player.
@@keeganandersson4281 agreed, meant more from a time standpoint, i remember reading about agassi in the 80's in Tennis magazine when he was teen phenom with the wild hair, neon clothes etc.. He played Lendl & Mcenroe early in his career!
I think his game was a bit more modern I think that’s why he had so much success in the Federer era. And he was pretty consistent against players like Roddick, Hewitt, and Safin, Sampras struggled against players like Safin and Hewitt. I think because of Agassi’s attacking game and because of his baseline style play he was able to play much better against players like that, while on the other hand samples serve and volley style didn’t quite hold up as well. I guess he was still consistently making it to the quarters and semis and even the finals of tournaments in his midto late 30s. He became if I’m not mistaken besides Ken Rosewall the oldest man in the open era to make it to a grand slam final after 2005 U.S. Open at 35 years old.
@@jaimejack0282 too bad Rafa didn’t get to experience the full Agassi “legs experience”. His side movement was notoriously hindered both times they met.
@BrunoSilvaRox Agassi from the late 90's would've won for sure. Although the grass was slower here mabye it would've been quite close if both were playing well
It was fitting that Andre's farewell was at the hands of a future legend like Rafa. The best should retire against the best. And the sheer admiration in Rafa's eyes at the embrace was a sight of class recognising class!
Everything about Rafa was just so unique and different, the style of play, the outfits, the haircut, the celebrations. The people’s player ❤! I miss that jump he used to make before a banana shot
Let's be honest - there have been, there are and there will be many players capable of producing such shots and such plays. What makes these two men all-time greats is the ability to play at that level not only for a whole match or even a whole tournament, but for many many years.
Exactly. So toxic. For me there are many GOATS and for people to ignorantly declare there's 1 with so many different circumstances and factors at play, is not what the sport is about
Loved watching Andre Agassi 🎾❤️ He is a tennis legend and has cemented his place in history. His Autobiography was one of the best! Both he and Steffi were two of my favourite players watching growing up.
If Agassi would have more physcal robustness would have great chance to beat Nadal. The point is that the players of 90's were much underdeveloped compared to this new generation of players. Nowadays they are super athletes.
@@fernandocesar6626I don’t think that’s true Agassi was an great athlete but his back was done. He had some type of condition and the wear and tear of his career didn’t help.
@@fernandocesar6626 agassi has great technique and it could be seen in this video too but he is simply too old already to stop young nadal . if this was prime agassi it would have been a different story . nadal is not in his prime here yet . prime vs prime nadal would win , but it would be a great game to watch . djokovic , federer and nadal in their primes are just the greatest 3 players in history .
This was the best version of Nadal. He was a threat on every surface, not just clay. This 20 years old Nadal is also much better than any young player today.
Even 15 years ago Rafael Nadal played very well! I like this tennis match because two legends were playing with each other! It was unbelievable match that I have ever seen!
This is actually 18 years ago! And Rafa was already established as the number two player behind Federer by then - he reached his first Wimbledon final this year.
By that year 2006 Andre Agasssi is like a ghost from the past. He won Wimbledon in 1992.14 years before this Match. All his contemporaries were retired and some might even be dead 😊
That is one thing I really appreciate about Agassi, the fact that he continued to push on a play into his mid to late 30’s. It really allowed for these great inter generational matchups. It’s a shame he didn’t get another shot at Nadal on a fast hardcourt.
Agassi was 36 years old in 2006, same age than Nole is today winning slams. The physcal of the players of 90's were much underdeveloped compared to this new generation of players. Nowadays they are super athletes.

In Steffi Graf's own words: "Agassi's double-handed backhand looks ugly"- but nevertheless, powerful. Nobody hits corners precisely like Agassi. Nadal's depth of hitting the baseline is awesome. What a match!
Rafa was 2 sets down and 2 points from defeat the round before this match. I wonder if Agassi was thinking "Man I could have played a qualifier but instead I have to play Rafa...."...how close was this meeting to never happening at Wimbledon. Agassi could have gone further had Robert Kendrick pulled off the upset. At the same time Agassi was really close to winning the first set. Still what a great career for Andre.
Agassi's body was breaking down by this point, so he was playing more to say goodbye. I'm sure he still wanted to win, but losing to Nadal was a memorable way to go out.
He might’ve beaten Kendrick but no way he holds up physically for the whole event. He beat Baghdatis at the USO a couple months later but had nothing left in the next round.
We can definitely see that Andre still had the game and moved very well for his age. Just that he couldn't handle Nadal and his youth. I believe that's going to be the very same for Nadal and Djokovic now in their late 30s, moving from here on. They're the GOATs of the sport so they'll obviously know what to do to win the match, but time waits for none. They won't be able to handle the youth and strength of Alcaraz and Sinner and fail as time goes on. Forever a Rafa fan!
Except from his two spikes in 1993 and 1997 due to injuries, Andre Agassi was a consistent Top 10 Player from 1988 to 2005!! What a legend he was. Sampras - Agassi - the best rivalry in tennis history.
Despite all the advantages players have now, Agassi, at his best, if transported to current times, would be fighting Djokovic and Alcaraz (Nadal as well if he comes back strong) for titles. He'd probably prefer tennis right now than when he played.
Yes but the same can not be said of Sampras, Agassi played in an era (especially his early career) dominated by big servers. I don’t see Sampras winning anything apart from Wimby if he played today but Agassi would have big chances in the rest 3.
@@rishabhaniket1952 Agassi had a game that would better fit today's environment. I feel a lot of his game could remain intact but physically he'd be able to benefit from improvements in sports science etc. The whole tennis environment was different. Sampras was better suited to his time than Agassi was. Sampras, unlike Agassi, would probably need to completely switch up his equipment and change his game, improve his backhand, and so on. He'd likely end up something like Federer if he were able to do it, given how similar they played when Fed was very young, like during their encounter at Wimbledon.
Goes to show how absurdly gifted a ball striker Agassi was, his last Wimbledon, almost last match in career due to a bad back which hampered his already less than stellar movement and serve, STILL gave Nadal a tough match at 35yo. Ashamed we never could see these 2 in their prime against each other.
andre was 36 here. yeah he was playing with a bad back in his last 2 years. he would have won both his matches against nadal (this and the montreal final) if it wasn’t for the injury.
Bro Agassi literally played the USO final after his first match vs Nadal in Canada. Whatever injury he had then, didn't stop him from playing a major final just 2 weeks after his loss vs Nadal.@@arisadriano1544
Love the Generation Match Ups.. This one 15 Years 10 Months Apart.. Amazing From 2006 - 2022.. Only ( 3 ) New Players Have Won Mens Singles Wimbledon Titles.. Since 2000 2022 - Only ( 7 ) Players Have Won Mens Singles Wimbledon Title..
A passing of the torch metaphor. What is it about today's men's circuit vs the big three? Obviously pure skills abound, but does it trully come down to mental toughness? Maybe it's selective bias, but it seems every video of Medvedev or Tsitspias (sp?) has them having some mental breakdown or tantrum. Competitive fire or immaturity?
the last 5 years have been the weakest era by far. no competitions just djokovic. his numbers are inflated. the young players are mentally weak and nadal is always injured. let’s hope alcaraz wimbledon triumph would inspire the other players to step up.
Tennis fans are toxic these days. They have forgotten how to just enjoy playing tennis and be happy that they get to experience something like this at this time.
That match was beFORE the rule change which made players play at a decent pace. Nadal was notorious for taking his time between points. Well, Agassi was one of the fastest in between plays on the tour at the time. He believed in serving the ball pretty quick after points had ended. He was getting frustrated at the slow pace of Nadal. So, at one point, he SITS DOWN in a linesman's chair by the side of the court while Nadal was toweling off. It was hilarious. It didn't help him, though. Nadal won.
Funny Raffa will be doing the same next year, we have been privaligd to see such greatness for me beign 54, my idol Lendl, Sampras, Nadal. The rest were ok too, lol.
