It's the variety of his dotting; under-dotting, over-dotting, every-which-way dotting that keeps this so fresh, natural and beautiful. Segovia really had a thorough understanding of techniques that smoothed out his renditions - this, in particular (the dotting) is so elegant and majestic. His life-long dedication was what the guitar world needed and got from dear Andres Segovia !
As the “Grandfather” of the modern classical guitar, many grandfathers pale in comparison to subsequent generations. Segovia is an exception. He would be (still is) on top of the heap. It would hard to imagine how great these pieces would like if he had the benefit of modern technology (recording equipment, strings etc). The guitar simply sings in this video. A fine example of his greatness.
I'll probably be booed for saying this, but he plays it too fast for my taste. The chords don't really get to sing the way I like them to. Obviously, his playing is masterful.
Very hard work in the begening of 20 century take the spanish guitar give to respectable place.l can see the maestro fill truly LOVE for the guitar and the music. No doubt about It. Gracias Don Andres
Perfectly and Exquisitely Expressive. Perhaps Segovia's words are best here: "the beauty of the guitar is in its soft and persuasive voice; its poetry cannot be equalled by any other instrument."
Segovia’s words were at times as great as his playing. The guy was truly in love with the guitar. And in love with life. His thoughts about music, Bach, sound and everything were those of an inspired man.
This beautiful tune was one of the reasons I took up classical guitar. Another commenter says that the sheet music was found on the stand the day Segovia died: sounds like a bit of a myth but beautiful if it's true.
Hello, from 8 years into the future. Here's what Google's Bard said to my query, which is something I've always wondered: What was the last song Andres Segovia played on his guitar View other drafts The last song Andrés Segovia played on his guitar was the traditional Catalan lullaby, El Noy de la Mare (The Song of the Mother). He played it at a concert in Miami on May 20, 1987, just a few weeks before his death.
I heard John Tesh on Entertainment tonight do a piece on Segovia back in 1987. He ended the piece with this clip. It was perfect. Been looking for this for 25 years.
The song is Catalan. Musicians from Siberia, Spain or New Zealand can cover it (welcome, well done), but what is relevant is that the song is Catalan. On the other hand, I believe that it cannot be said that someone is Spaniard, when Spanish nationality is imposed on Catalans, Basque, Galicians and Canarians by obligation, by brute force and many and several methods of coercive and bureaucratic power of an expansionist, violent, colonial empire like the Spanish. It would be necessary to ask Miquel Llobet (in a context of real full personal freedom, without spanish pressure or intimidation), if he felt Spaniard or not, but in any case, it cannot be said that he was Spaniard when he is already deceased and cannot answer. What is certain is that he was Catalan, since the citizens of Catalonia, both those who feel Spaniards and those who do not, all consider themselves Catalan.
The sheet music to El Noi de la mare was found open on his music stand the day he died. It was the last piece he ever played... My favorite for a lot of reasons.
yes now is the time to get into it if that's ur desire to..when ur young and mind is like a sponge and you have all the energy drive and focus.. but you gotta mix it up with some good hard rock in there.. I'd recommend M. Schenker. ;) It's the sweet spot electrified! :) His soloing is in the groove tasteful badass sweet clever..he's THE rock guitar icon and is a legend. It the same respect that Segovia is THE classical guitar icon and master.
Question - Can anyone actually get the 'A' harmonic that clear in the last few measures on the first string at the 17th fret on any guitar they own - or is it just a Hauser thing?
Aveva tante imperfezioni tecniche a tratti,ma la "musica",l'amore che trasmetteva Segovia con le sue esecuzioni e la passione che ci mostra oggi con le sue registrazioni sono inarrivabili!
On my computer, the advertiser presents a hip-hop dude speaking with heavy slang. Are the advertisers missing the demographic of classical music listeners? Or, since rap music has been around for almost 4 decades, maybe the musical listener of today listens to both classical music and hip-hop. Any hip-hop listeners here?
The author of the song is not Miquel Llobet. It is a Catalan lullaby and Christmas carol long before Miquel Llobet, whose authorship is unknown. Please, consult the entry: "El noi de la mare" which is the title of the song, in the Wikipedia in Catalan, Spanish or French, and there you will find this information. On this particular article, the English Wikipedia, as of December 2022, gives some inaccurate information.
Was just browsing...saw this comment. Is it crazy to think that whatever political or religious beliefs one might hold might be better suited to forums of such nature? This is Segovia...playing guitar really well. Do we go to CCP videos and post about Julian Bream?
My mom said he had a very, very good guitar, and he lets every sound swing till the end of it's time... so i think he just plays it really "fluent", so by letting every tone hit it's full time it somehow sounds like a "reverb"... i think... im jealous that you can play it: P
Without any doubt. The audio here and on the other Segovia recording on this channel of the Torroba sonatina have had the audio re-mastered and sprinkled with fairy dust without any doubt. I love both videos though and the playing is wonderful.
