Recorded in the Coyote Gulch canyons of Utah, Echolocations: Canyon is first in a series of short films and recordings which document site specific compositions performed by Andrew Bird and filmed by Tyler Manson in exceptional natural and urban environments. Bird says:
"Ever since I was a child I would test different spaces with my voice or whistle or violin. Whatever sound you make it's like a giant limb that can reach beyond your fingers and grope the corners of the room. Now when I'm on tour playing a different theater every night we "tune" the room, hunting down the bass traps and the standing waves to give the listener the most even and wide spectrum of sound. There are certain frequencies that resonate while others are lifeless. Sometimes the room refuses to yield and I have to consider playing different songs that will work in that room. It's a challenge but I enjoy the moments when I must yield to the environment. So I thought it would be interesting to take all this outside where the reflections off the landscape are triggering countless inferences and steering the conversation."
The new composition will also be featured in Andrew Bird and Ian Schneller's "Sonic Arboretum" at the The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston from February 4th-May 10th. More information can be found at www.icaboston.org

I love to go backpacking there (going tomorrow morning, actually!) and every time I walk through I imagine him playing. It's tradition to listen to the album as I go through, now.

I went in this canyon 20 years ago as a 10 year old. One of the most incredible awe inspiring experiences of my life. One of my favorite artists playing in that place, to me, perfect.

You walk through water, almost the entire hike.

uh oh. thanks for the information. i've been reading lot of descriptions of hikes in that area - many other hikes say you have to wade thru water. i've read several descriptions of this hike - and none of them mention hiking thru water (except one alludes to walking thru water because he got caught out there after dark). does the water get deep? thanks again

Water is never too deep. Take Neo socks and it will still be enjoyable. I'd def go in the off season.

thanks again for your advice. we spent $13 bucks on neoprene socks and they saved the day. it got down to 20 degrees at night but the cold chased the crowds away. we were the only 2 people camping beneath the arch and we only saw one other couple the entire time in the gulch. it was a fantastic trip

This reminds me of Paul Horn's work. It's similar in concept at least (go to a great place like the Taj Mahal, and use the space as an instrument and basis for composition). Stoked to hear the rest! Coming Soon for Echolocations: CITY LAKE FOREST RIVER

I play this album to help relax and calm down. I've listened to it when nervous about taking off on a plane and before job interviews. I listen to it before bed. It is such a gift. Thank you, Andrew Bird! ♥️

This was part of one of the best National Monuments in the country, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, where the locals would prefer to graze cows and drill for oil and loot ancient artifacts than play host to artists and musicians. Donald J. Trump conman and real estate sleazeball in his infinite wisdom decided this doesn't deserve to be a national monument after all. Good on Mr. Bird for taking music outdoors, and finding new value in a de-valued landscape.

Is, not was. And as for what its precise legal status and the grazing rules should be, opinion among locals may remain divided, but insult-first persons like yourself are not consulted. CS
