We encourage the Messengers of the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in June 2024 to affirm the Nicene Creed. We encourage the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in June 2025 to include the Creed as an article in the Baptist Faith and Message. We are also happy to include the Apostles’ Creed, the Athanasian Creed, and the Chalcedonian Definition.

They’ve always believed in the Nicene Creed from the beginning, they’ve always treated it as an unquestionable given that all real Christian uphold - everybody agreed with it that no one bothered to officially codify it into the their Confessions and Statements of Faith. Many Evangelical denominations are including a lot of additional sections in their Confessions and Statements of Faith because and clearing up vague language or language that can be wrongly interpreted to prevent theological liberalism from seeping in like what’s been happening in a lot of theologically liberal Mainline Protestant denominations where multiple whole entire congregations and many top church leaders are abandoning even the most basic doctrines of Christianity.

Is the SBC finally going to affirm baptism for the remission of sins??

Pure gold right here

The phrase is in the Bible, which the SBC affirms (Acts 2:38). The interpretation of that is still up for debate, even if they eventually affirm it - which as a SBC pastor, I totally think they should!

Is the SBC going to have apostolic succession?

The wording is off. The creed actually states “one baptism with repentance for the remission of sins” therefore it is repentance not baptism that is the source of salvation by forgiveness. The man was speaking in front of nearly 12,000 people, he’s allowed to miss a word lol. I was there when this motion was made and I am in favor of it

@@1369brandon That's actually not true. The Greek text of the NC says "ὁμολογοῦμεν ἓν βάπτισμα εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν." The phrase "with repentance" is not in the original text of the NC or in any translated version of the NC that I've seen.

Aaaaaaand there's the Filioque...🤦

I don't get the issue there. Scripture says that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ. That plainly implies a procession from Father and Son. Why is making a minor amendment for specification's sake a problem?

Yeah if they aren’t connected to either Catholics or Orthodox they should have to make a decision on the fillioque.

Wasn't this the same convention that didn't know whether a woman could be a pastor a couple years ago? Now they want to add eternal generation to their official documents? You can't make this stuff up.

Sounds like you disagree with the Creed? Even the original of 325 includes it. I hope you believe what it says and if you do not then please repent and be baptized for "Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father"
