DeAndre is all hype. Look where he is today. Yeah, I do not even know what team he is playing right now. Old Man Duncan exposed his defense at the age of 39.
Maybe if the Lakers just kept Bynum in 2012 it wouldn't cost Mike Brown is job because he started using the dumb Princeton offense as soon as Dwight came.
Bynum has a post game that can't be stop when he's at 100% Dwight Howard is number 2 to him compared with post moves and shooting Bynum is the best center in the nba when he's healthy and isn't acting up
@Jack Burton not true at all. Revisionist history at its finest. Saying Dwight had zero post moves is a media driven fallacy. He wasn't polished nor was he fluid or fundamental sound but he definitely was a capable post scorer. He used that sweeping jump hook often, he used a wide variety of drop steps, spin moves, and even had a 10 ft bank shot that he shot pretty frequently in Orlando. Not being a prolific lost scorer doesn't mean he didn't have the ability. U don't average 23 a game on just athleticism and no skill. Bynum was talented but not nearly as effective or efficient as Howard. Nor did his game have the same level of impact that Howard did. Howard not having competition for rebounds has nothing to do with anything. He's ALWAYS been an elite rebounder. He came into the league averting 10 and never averged any less until the last 3 seasons. He was a FAR more impacted all around defender, and impacted his teams for more than Bynum could ever dream of. Bynum never reached an mvl caliber level to even challenge howard. He had potential but he never realized it. So to say an on the come up player is better than someone willing his own team to a finals with DOMINANT play is ridiculous. People said the same shit about brook lolex being better than hiward because he had some post moves. Stop it. do I need to sen u the footage to shut this shit down? bynum wanted to problems with d12.
@Jack Burton typical of RU-vid dickheads to not have anything credible to say in rebuttal, and return with childish insults, and unoriginal banter. I choose to not go back, and edit because who cares? This isn't English class. And if it was. I'd put u to shame. My writing abilities would far surpass anything your simple minded brain could comprehend. Come back with a real debating point, or Stfu forever.
Its pretty amazing. Bynum wasn't a super athlete by any means, but had great feet, solid body control and amazing touch. As a 7 footer, thats all you really need to have an elite low post game. Its tragic his career was cut short by his knees and attitude because he would still likely been in his absolute prime for another 3-5 years. Man the league is already lacking quality low post big men, it is tragic that Bynum fell apart so early on.
Tom O'Connell Mr. O'Donnell... but do we really need low post pig men anymore? Look at the 2011-14 Miami Heat and 2015 Golden State Warriors... the young athleticism and fast paced run and gun style with accurate shooting and scoring would overwhelm them any day.
ImperialDecree If the Heat or the Warriors had to face a solid team with Andrew Bynum (the one we see in the video) they would have significant problems matching up and stopping him from owning the paint. The warriors were able to get away with having Draymond Green (6'7") play the 5 spot in the finals this year--with a legit scoring big man, the warriors would not have been able to play Green at that spot
Bynum was freaking monster player, I remember him with the Lakers, he was on bench, then he was starting, dunking, posting everyone, won 2 rings, was an All Star, and I dont know what happened to him...I also remember him owning Shaq, I honestly had high hopes for this dude, he was even better than Dwight at one point , Idk why Lakers traded him but that was the worst move ever
Apart from the injuries, its his attitude. He wasn't a great professional (probably explains the injuries). Too bad for the Lakers, they replaced him with another cry baby in Dwight "Offensive Option" Howard.
He's such a load to handle down in the post. His post moves are sharp along with great touch on his jump hooks. Nothing like watch a true center play true back to the basket kind of ball.
It wasn't Bynum's knees I had a problem with (Ewing's were equally as bad and Lanier's even worse; both centers are in the HOF, by the way). It was his seriously inflated ego that got me so fed up with him as a Laker fan. The moment he said he didn't need Kareem teaching him anything anymore back in '09, I knew it was only a matter of time before he eventually turned on the Lakers franchise and ultimately the league for that matter. Bynum was the best combination of physical strength and low-post fundamentals since Artis Gilmore and all he ends up doing is act a fool off the court when he wasn't busy getting himself ejected from games for constantly pestering Stern's zebras (lol). I really do hope he doesn't finally wear out his welcome with the Pacers this season because he still has it in him to help that team get to the Finals and possibly win it all if he wants to. I just wish the young motivated Bynum who began to break out for real back during the '07-'08 season as an elite-level All-Star center (before Lamar Odom's foot derailed his entire season) was the one that remained instead of the heartless tin man we see now. Oh well, at least the Lakers got a couple titles out of him for what it's worth...
When he had the breakout year he was the 3rd option behind Kobe and Gasol but still averaged 18 pts 10 Rebs 2 blks. I think if he was dedicated, didn't have knee issues and was the #1 option he could've put up 24 pts 12 Rebs
If Byrum stayed healthy, he was one of the last traditional big man who had a real post game. I was surprised at how often he used his left to shoot. He got the body, the long arms, a natural. If he didn't get injured and weird. I remember Pau sitting down with him to talk after one playoff loss, i thought Lakers would regroup, then Byrum was traded.
There was a period when the Lakers could just throw it to Bynum on the elbow and expect either 80% fg percentage or a double team for a good look. Bynum had higher potential than any center since shaq. And I'm not forgetting Dwight
I remember Kareem would say that he tried teaching the Sky Hook to Andrew but he didn’t want to learn/use it, but this video is evidence that he did put his own spin on what was taught to him by Kareem. Andrew’s hook shot isn’t as pretty or sweeping as Kareem’s, but damned if it doesn’t get just as high if not higher than the old Sky Hook. I had no idea how much he relied on that over the left shoulder hook, and after years of watching centers in the present era simply jacking up three pointers, it’s quite beautiful to watch.
This is beautiful. I do not understand why fans today have no love on post plays. The only reasons I can think are laziness and softness. Maybe lack of patience. I do not think it is about the game is changing. Of all the teams that won the championship since 2015, only the Warriors relied heavily on 3-point shooting. This is the era when fans are talking too much about analytics and 3-point shooting. Yes the game is evolving but I never believe the game really change at it very core. The formula is still the same to win a championship, have a solid offense, have a formidable defense and have at least one unbelievably talented player and you have a good crack to win one.
THE MENTAL TOUGHNESS that BYNUM has. Is much more tougher than the rest of the superstars in todays era.. prime healthy BYNUM will eat EMBIID. ANTETOKOUNMPU and others BIGS in todays era. VERY PHYSICAL and STRONG.. He will excel in any era
just watching him lumber in the post is a joy to watch... I hope to see a renaissance of back-to-basket big men in my time so we can see more of this type of grinding style
A lot of people don't realize how good Bynum was he was probably a distraction in the locker room or probably didn't work hard but to be honest I would take him today as my center because clearly the centers these days are straight up trash tbh
I am amazed that Andrew Bynum can shoot a jumpshot and can perform some post moves. In terms of post moves and other basketball fundamentals and footwork, I put Bynum over Dwight Howard despite that Dwight has better stats except his freethrows. The Lakers needed Bynum for those championship years in 2009 and 2010.
I'm so sad that he got injured. That guy was a beast; He had true great post skill, he had the size, he was a very good rebounder,... He's only 28 and his career is as good as over for a few years now. I'm sad that we couldn't see what Oden could have been, but Bynum is even worse. The way he destroys O'Neal at the beginning is epic
I remember when the year he was drafted. It was the big 3 next dominate centers. Tyson Chandler, Kwame brown, and Andrew Bynum. And Bynum was the last one drafted. They used to call him Mini Shaq in school. I had a feeling with is size (280 pounds) he could be the best of the 3. Brown was drafted #1, Chandler #2 and Bynum at #10!, Bynum and Chandler came right out of high school to the NBA, Kwame was the one everyone thought was a sure thing. Lakers got Bynum at #10 I knew they scored on that pick..
Bynum at his peak was probably the second best center in the league after Dwight, and he excelled in the one thing that Dwight struggled with: a great post game.
He had the size, length, strength, athleticism, touch, timing, post moves, foot work. It's too bad Odom and Kobe broke his knees twice. Lakers would have won more championships with him. Good thing he got that big contract to set him off for life.
bynum was indirectly the reason why the lakers won in 2009 and 2010! Lakers were a dark horse title contender just before the gasol trade and before he initially got hurt. We lose in the finals in 2008 without bynum's toughness! Beat an orlando the next year with an overrated big man in dwight howard and a bunch of 3 point shooters! Then the next year we beat the celtics with bynum healthy! If bynum never really developed the way he did the year we got gaol we probably would not have gotten gasol!
Are you fucking kidding me. He averaged 7.4 points and 5.1 rebounds that series against Boston. The offensive rating of the Lakers actually improved by 6.9 when he wasn't on the floor and defensive rating was almost the same. He definitely wasn't the key. That was Pau Gasol in both those series.
Bynum wasn't healthy that postseason, even thought he played in all the playoff series. Boston fans kept saying that they lose the finals because perkins couldn't play in game 7, but Bynum wasn't even healthy for all the postseason.
Work ethic separates the good players from the bad ones. I do believe he got everything too early in his career and just lost his love for the game. He could've been an all time great, especially in today's game where there are few true centers.
It's crazy that there are no current big men in the NBA that have this skill set. Yet the media wants us to believe the players are more talented than past players
As a laker fan, I still wish they had Bynum, he has post game and the ability to play as good defense and Dwight at times when his attitude is right .... Look at the last year he played for the lakers when he had what 10 blocks against Denver
there, my friends, is a man with the potential to be the greatest big man of this decade. all the talent in the world. if he had only been mature, he wouldve been the best ever. RIP bynums carrer and hair
He was actually better than Dwight. Dwight was better defensively. But Bynum was at another level offensively. Remember when Dwight came to the Lakers. We knew 3 things after watching Dwight, he coudn't hit free throws (we already knew that), didn't have post moves and he was a turnover waiting to happen in the post, he couldn't even dribble decently. Bynum was never a #1 option offesively. If he was the number 1 option, he would have posted at least 25 ppg, 13-15 rpg. In that time, there would be no conversation between who was the best between Dwight and Andrew.
this bumps andy varejao to the bench, giving the cavs possibly the best bench in the league. jarrett jack, andy varejao, anthony bennett, tyler zeller, earl clark, cj miles, sergey karasev, carrick felix. that's one hell of a bench
This video was from 1-2 years ago. If you watched him this season you would notice how perfectly timed his cuts are, how smart he is on defense and how deserving he was of the title. The Grizzlies' opponents averaged the lowest points out of anyone in the NBA for a reason
Looked up Bynum because I really miss watching skilled post up bigs. Anybody else remember when he took an ill-advised 3 and got taken out of the game? Time has changed lol
Bynum/Gasol/Odom was a Deadly combination for the Lakers in the post. Bynum could do everything in the post, rebound, defense, shotblock, power, strength, length, but what was rare about Bynum, he had the post moves n could really score, dominate. You could give him the ball n let him work. He was probably the best scoring Center at the time.
i'd rather watch sharp post moves than hard slamdunks all day every day. cause dunks don't take practice - you are 7 footer who got enough space, you go and jam it down. those bynum's shakes and spins take hours of work/sweat/tears. must appreciate it
The problem with Bynum is HEART. The guy shows up when he feels like showing up. You can say that about plenty of star athletes, but Bynum is the poster child for it. He gives 50% here, 75% there, 30% there, and maybe a few games of real 100% effort. Unless your truly transcendent talent-wise, that's not enough in the NBA on a night in, night out basis.
I'm a laker fan and I thought bynum was a great center in his last year with the lakers. I was curious to see how he would carry the sixers franchise, but too bad he has his health problems. I think he'll continue to be a great center under Mike brown with the cavs as long as his health is good.
This guy, if he's healthy AND actually plays with some kind of motivation, is one of the premier big men in the league. He's right up there with Howard. He didn't show that he could stay healthy for a considerable amount of time tho ... and when he was healthy he rarely showed strong desire to play actualy ball ...
jeez look at him go he is a post hook specialist, pay attention to who's guarding him as well...couple to mention Prime Tyson Chandler, Marc Gasol, Deandre Jordan, KG....wow edit : the end was too funny, perfect way to seal it lmao
