Andy's a genius. His last name is spelled "Bird" though. I learned of him through John Diliberto's excellent New Age music show, called "Echoes" based on the Pink Floyd masterpiece. Bird is a bird. Play more Birds!
If you like this you should check out Andrew Birds live recording of Plasticities from The Basement. I’m a violinist, and that live recording blows my mind
He's incredible, I absolutely love him. If you want to hear more from him check out Roma Fade! Also yeah, that's a straight up violin. Idk how he's miked it or whether he's put any electric pickups on it, but yeah that fingerpicking technique is also used in classical music sometimes, it's called pizzicato. Great reaction! :)
Some of his best stuff sounds a bit like Django Reinhardt early 2 albums from 1998 and 1999 listen to “Thrills” and “Oh! The Grandeur”, you cannot be disappointed.
Finally in the second half of the song I figured out who the vocalist reminded me of - the voice reminds me of the lead singer of Semisonic who had the hit Closing Time - if you haven't reacted to that please consider it
I agree he's trained to do something that isn't ordinarily done but the technique isn't that unusual nor rare... HOWEVER, Mairead Nesbitt is THE BEST performing violinist in a generation. Winning the All-Ireland Fiddle Championship at an early age The Fiddle Fairy has never looked back. Performing with symphonies around the world but most known as a founding member of Celtic Woman... So how about a reaction to a live violin performance where a barefoot, classically trained violinist goes ham on her 320 year old violin and turns a butterfly into a dragonfly...
