I hope Andrew realizes that NPR is no different than the rest of the mainstream media. She started the interview with an insult towards her GUEST! NPR has fallen so low. This interview disgusts me

Andrew straight up feels like a vigilante journalist. Gets the job done better than anyone because he doesn’t play by the rules. This woman’s envy is almost palpable, and it feels like she’s masking it behind a veneer of so-called journalistic integrity and sound morality.

It’s hilarious listening to this woman today, in 2024, days after NPR is accused of having a liberal bias. I have a huge amount of respect for Andrew. Lex hosted a great interview.

I'm an almost 65-year-old former journalist turned copywriter. I loved Abbie Hoffman and Hunter Thompson as well as Edward R Murrow. I feel that Andrew is continuing their tradition of speaking truth to power, but in a way that doesn't condescend to people he disagrees with. I think he calls his interview approach "radical listening," and it's a perfect way to handle the inchoate babble on both sides. And I love how he showed this biased interviewer the benefits of nonjudgmental reporting. As my old Journalism professor kept hammering: "Show. Don't tell."

As sad as it is I think it is important for Andrew to do interviews like this every once in a while. This interview made me realize that there is still a massive disconnect between new or alt media compared to mainstream media. I know Andrew hates it, but it really shows a rabbit hole of narrative the NPR interviewer went down that many other mainstream reporters follow as well.

This lady proving the point of his movie and not realizing it is fascinating.

13:02 "yah it doesn't work" This was my take-away from spending a little time on twitter trying to untangle people's complicated knots of misinformation. Imo people will only dig in their heels when confronted. Everybody's stressed, overworked, underappreciated, and grasping at straws.

This might be the most useful interview about Andrews message toward his film... unintentionally by the interviewer. It highlights how fantastic of an Interviewer Andrew Callaghan is. His career will be even more massive.

I absolutely love his comment about "slam dunking on them for viewership". I feel like that's how we get deeper in these divides. We do not approach the problem from understanding but approach from a perspective of "you're right and I'm wrong"

I Understand this must have been a frustrating and even discouraging experience for Andrew but the footage speaks for itself, and it drives home the point he is making about the mainstream media. Hang in there Andrew, you’re doing something really special

It’s a fear of mine that I will wake up one day, an older man, grown out of touch with what the current generation is experiencing. to forget to keep learning by reduction-breaking down my hard built worldview to learn something from someone with fresh eyes. if you do not surrender, and try to see, you will be blind-doomed to repeat past mistakes of refusing to evolve in the process. I feel this is the gold Andrew is so good at driving home. many label him as a cynical deconstructionist, but he’s literally handing us the keys to the kingdom..

Came here to watch this after the Lex Fridman interview

I’m here after watching his interview with Lex Fridman. This was after his press tour was canceled after what he said on cnn. This was the only interview he that wasn’t canceled. He was going to appear on all the major late night shows, all of those went away when he dared to actually be a little critical of the media. This is why nothing changes, people don’t usually rock the boat and go along with the agenda and don’t step out of line. I respect his courage. This was also around the time the sexual misconduct stuff came out of nowhere, kind of makes you think

Andrew is really singlehandedly influencing society in the absolute most important way possible right now. Helping teach young people to empathize with people who have different political backgrounds. He will be remembered for a long long time. Probably the most important journalist alive rn.

For those not from the Lex Friedman podcast, according to Andrew this host refused to shake his hand backstage before the event because, in her words, he'd been around people whose germs she didn't want. He also said she was wearing two stacked KN-95 masks, which you can see on her wrist throughout the interview.

Bro thanks for taking the time to film this and put it together. Great watch. Love how the NPR journalist inadvertently just makes his points for him about how ingenuine mainstream media is, her takes on his documentary were just wild and I was so impressed with how Andrew handled her questions.

this really wasnt all that egregious. she asked him the obligatory MSM brained questions, which threw the vibe off early on, but kept it moving. tbh their hunter breakthrough was cute and im glad they ended on a positive note

Hunter S. Thompson rode with the Hell’s Angels for a year as an honorary member in order to research his novel of the same name. He did this because, in order to accurately report upon a phenomena, you have to listen. You have to understand before you diagnose. It was this style of Gonzo journalism that allowed him to accurately and effectively explore *what* perpetuates the anti-establishment rhetoric of these outlaws. People don’t wake up and decide to become a criminal, or a conspiracy theorist, or what have you. Various societal influences have a direct impact on what fuels these people and forces them into their own communities. Becoming a Q Anon conspiracy theorist isn’t that cause, it’s a *symptom* - the cause is rooted firmly in undiagnosed mental health problems, laughably ineffective adult media literacy, and a battalion of news outlets whose sole purpose is to manipulate these gullible, mentally ill people into believing what they’re selling. You can’t just speak. You have to listen. And that’s what Channel 5 successfully does. And it’s only when you listen that you can correctly find the root of the problem and begin to solve it.

It's great to see Robin open up more towards the end when they discuss Hunter Thompson. You can see that sort of mainstream glaze crack and her journalist/talkshow passion come out.

This is man who watched early Louis Theroux and learned how to get conversation going instead of useless arguments

It’s called nuance, and that is what Andrew is fantastic at. Beautifully done.

This comment by her is a metaphor for this entire interview, except in this scenario, Andrew is the young kid, and she is the adult who can't see what he sees so clearly. 11:30 "The kid was the smartest, most clear-eyed...it was like a child was seeing what seems like a lot of other people couldn't see."

That crushed look when she starts out with "well hopefully now you'll listen." Is a real never meet your heros moment

It’s truly amazing to watch her brain break in real time when Andrew isn’t fooled by her pointed questioning.

Andrew handled this like a boss. This woman makes the left look exactly how conservatives imagine all liberals. I hope Andrew can remain fully independent while being successful, because there's obviously a lot of higher-ups who want to maintain their monopoly on journalism and keep the status quo stationary.

This interview was actually pretty pleasant toward the end, felt like there were some rocky bumps at the beginning but the two understood eachother a little better after that

3/15/23 update from Rob: I appreciated Andrew releasing an apology video and I have responded with my own thoughts in another video. I’ve recently been working on my own various videos around Boston, here is the first one in a series on homelessness in Boston: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BtzClKm7XYw.html 1/10/23 update from rob: while filming and posting this video I was not aware of Andrew’s allegations that were emerging. I am not taking down the video, as some asked me, since I still consider it an enlightening (and intense) discussion about the media and divisions in America and the insights Andrew gained interviewing people and making his movie. I hope that he addresses the allegations and uses his position of media attention to set an example for how to respond to these situations, admitting any of his own wrongdoing and allowing others a chance to express their experiences and grievances and chart a path forward. I appreciate how some other interviewers have taken turns picking up the microphone in some of Channel 5’s more recent content this past year, and I hope this trend continues with fresh faces taking up the mantle of journalism and helping to carry Channel 5 forward. I may edit this or post a new pinned comment as information involves.

Andrew is such a genuine person. Even when the cameras aren’t rolling he listens with intention to almost everyone he meets, and I think that’s why he’s so good at what he does.

Andrew is a precious asset to the world and needs to be protected.

Although the interview felt like it started rocky, I appreciate the NPR interviewer finding common interests with Andrew, like meeting Hunter Thompson and hitch-hiking in her youth. Made the latter half much more playful and fun instead of hammering on the same political fear-mongering points. Edit: Also awesome job getting this uncut version :D Keep up the great work!

I've seen her get a lot of criticism, and while I don't disagree I will say I think asking these questions to Andrew is important, not because I think they're well founded accusations but because his content has a lot of complex nuances and a lot of people especially of an older generation will undoubtedly have these concerns. I think she's done a fantastic job in giving him the space to represent himself and explain his work and his views. I thought it was a great interview.

I love seeing him do what I dreamed of at his age.

This is a good interview haha. I get it was awkward and annoying for him to do but he says a lot of good shit because of the questions he was asked. She was way out of pocket a few times but it didn't feel malicious. She's old and liberal but she felt genuinely curious to me.

For anyone curious, the interview she's referencing starting at 15:30 seems to be from the Stranger, and Andrew says “They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, but I just disagree about stealing art in general. I’m not going to say I own that interview style, but yeah it doesn’t flatter me at all. Every city has a copycat." Title of the article is "All Gas No Brakes Has Died, but Seattle's Own Andrew Callaghan Has Been Resurrected".

this interview is a perfect example of how NPR weaponizes their soft-spoken "NPR voice". Lady says the most ridiculous/callous things but it's ok because she's soft spoken.

thank you for posting this; it's been very helpful in unpacking and examining the phenomenon and content of Channel 5 in general and Andrew/This Place Rules in particular. i think my takeaway is more sympathetic to the interviewer than most of the commenters and people in the crowd. her Alex Jones survivor question was really bad, i agree with Andrew's take on mainstream/liberal media, but he uses his disconnect from the system, which obviously resonated with the audience, to pressure the interviewer whenever he actually has to reflect on something. She is poignant at times, but they're not playing the same game. it's hard to address his self-styled ethics, or his views on his own branch of the journo business. everything is outmaneuvered, turned around, cards are suddenly held very close to the chest. it shows a more calculating, controlling Andrew than you usually see in his persona. you can tell he's able to switch quickly and see rhetorical games play out in his head. he's not afraid of using the vocal part of the crowd (most of the people there?) in his advantage, or using the interviewers personal code against her, while mostly obscuring his own. you can see the outlines of his ego and the narrative he has about himself and how much of that he wants to share with the audience. which is interesting, considering the way he gets other people to share things with him and his audience that might not be beneficial to them in the long run. i think this also says something about his friendships with Joker and that bass-smoking dude; they seem mentally unequipped to function in modern society, with poor prospects other than what they can get in the moment. Andrew has just sold a documentary to a top dog streaming service. i think, at best, he looks at them the way i look at my pets: sentient, i care for them, but definitely not my peers. at worst, i think they're just useful clowns in the circus of Channel 5.
