I sold up in the UK in 2010 and retired to Malta. I now cannot recognise the country I left. It's now poorer, meaner, more divided and is less respected internationally. Thank goodness I got out in time.

I have met many refugees over the past few years. Every one of them have been an amazing person eager to work hard to rebuild their lives. I’ve seen many struggle as, whilst waiting for a judgement after claiming asylum, it is illegal for them to work or study, they must exist on state handouts and live in group housing dictated by the government. In the UK especially this can easily take 2 years. Its inevitable some will turn to working illegally or to crime since they are given zero legal options to better themselves with legitimate work. Its also sucha frustrating myth that so many come here, expecting to live off of state handouts. Its very true that many are stuck on state handouts and thats what people see, causing this emotive outburst, however its not cause they want to but because our Government is so utterly and arguably deliberately incompetent at processing asylum applications that tens of thousands are stuck that way for years.

As a retired lawyer myself, I am ashamed that a bigoted and ignorant woman like Braverman seems to have so little grasp of her mandate.

There has been no significant change in the number of asylum seekers coming to Britain in over a decade. The only reason it is a problem is the Government closing off almost all legal routes into the country and failing to process applications in a timely manner. There is a massive backlog of asylum applications because the government is so incompetent with processing them. This also means even people who don't have a valid claim for asylum do not get deported because their application does not get processed so they stay in the country for years while until it is. This is the real reason why leaky Sue wants to make everyone who comes into the UK "illegally" ineligible for asylum by default because if you remove all safe legal routes into the country then say anyone who does not come by a safe legal route is not entitled to claim asylum you can effectively ban asylum seekers from coming to the country completely and cover up the fact that you are completely incompetent at doing your job because no asylum seekers = no applications for asylum to process.

How is the UK built on immigration? Serious question. People keep repeating it but that doesn't necessarily make it true.

Suella Braverman stated that boat people were " criminals". A criminal is someone who has been convicted of a crime. She is the worst lawyer ever to disgrace the office of attorney general.

I suggest we hold a referendum and "ask the people" of this country to vote on what they want to do regarding the mass immigration issue and obtain a consensus of opinion. Is that fair?

Unfortunately, it's in the Tories best interests to deliberately be incompetent in assessing asylum claims and providing legal routes. Create the problem (backlog and forcing channel crossings) and dogwhistle to your decieved voter base. It's the only political move they have left in their hands.

My ex wife worked for an MP in the early 2000s. She dealt with immigration issues and said back then that the immigration system was not fit for purpose and she was right. The whole system is in need of a complete overhaul and until it is done we will carry on having these issues. As for people having different values. Those who came here in the post WW2 period often had different values, religions and languages, but they adjusted to Britain and enriched it with their knowledge and culture. This government has not got a clue how to fix the problem so they just blame others for their own incompetence 😡. Quicker we have a General Election the better imo.

Migrant = legal entrant to country that is in need of their skill. No one has a problem with this. Asylum seeker= Someone who has fled their own country because of persecution. Again no one really has a problem with this. Illegal Migrant= someone who has no skill or they would enter through legal means and be a wanted migrant. They undermine the first two, and make it harder for them to enter. Most reasonable people including people who lean right, know the first one is needed for the betterment of our country and the second one is the right thing for a civilised country to do. The third which is the only one anyone is interested in, needs to be stopped immediately if you care at all about the first two.

I find it hard to believe when you hear this from suella bravermann, holder of one of the most powerful ministries of state, that she us still in office, and secondly that Gary lineker was castigated for making the comments he did. The lack of any empathy from this woman is shocking and for a woman who has no compunction in expressing these beliefs to still hold the ministry she does questions more then the priminister's judgement.

Correct me if I am wrong and you can prove that to be the case, but I do remember hearing about a study in the US that found that crime rates among immigrants were lower than among US citizens as a group. That actually makes a great deal of sense a the penalty for a citizen caught committing a crime might mean incarceration in the US or perhaps public service, but the penalty for an immigrant usually involves getting sent back to where they came from

Andrew Marr is quite a reasonable man but his implication that British people are not hardworking is insulting and false. I worked at a distribution centre for a well-known supermarket. Employees of the supermarket were mainly Brits, and the agency workers were mainly immigrants. The difference in pick rates, cage-marshalling rates and every other metric was negligible. Some weeks the supermarket employees had higher rates, some weeks, the agency workers. Given the right motivation and incentives, anyone from any culture or race is capable of hard work and conscientiousness.

Whatever is morally right or wrong there is a housing crisis and people are suffering. Whatever the cause of that is needs addressing. Maybe also do a video of the thousands of people on the emergency housing list around Kent for example. The rest of the country is probably just as bad. Unless there is a solution to housing I can see shantytowns creeping in. Whoever it is that is running this country can you please understand that houses and peoples homes are important. It’s all very well creating inflation and putting the price up of everything, that’s if you’ve even got a home in the first place. It seems to be the government does not actually know what it’s doing when it comes to every day people and what I need. It has become increasingly obvious.

I'm not a historian but the headline and former BBC man Andrew Marr's claim " Britain was built on immigration " is a outrageous falsehood and seems somewhat ironic when some of his ex colleagues and their like also claim this very same country was built on colonialism, it can't be both surely. Marr is obviously right in saying Britain has been INVADED by Vikings, Norman's the Roman empire etc but they were not invited they were not immigrants. Britain has essentially been a white European Christian country throughout its existence a homogeneous society up to WW2. The percentage of foreign born living in the UK in 1951 was less than 1% in 1961 4.9% in 2021 17% this nation has seen more immigration in almost 30 years than the last 2000 years. So to claim such as the headline is a lie and complete propaganda.
