It’s time for a system where our government provides the energy, at non-profit, taken from the yearly budget. Why is nobody demanding this? Politicians must be receiving massive payments from these energy companies to have not stepped in yet.
@CaminoAir
@CaminoAir Год назад
I'm Irish. Our government provided a euro 200 credit against energy bills to all households earlier this year. They are about to repeat this (probably euro 400 this time). Think about the total cost of household energy bills in England alone (not incl business energy use). Now divide the available Budget resources by the number of households. It's not realistic. If the government borrow to pay for the shortfall, your government's ability to borrow on international markets will evaporate long before remotely enough money could be borrowed.......and citizens will have to pay that back anyway over decades. Better to cap total bills AND levy a windfall tax as well.

I work in the mortgage industry and one thing I came across that makes zero sense is the way a lot of modern social housing projects works. We have a situation in many areas that local authorities pay third party companies to house people however most of these third party companies don't own any properties so they then rent the properties from private landlords so you have 2 private individuals adding additional fees and costs making profit in this chain. Surely there must be more cost effective ways to do this to help people that need somewhere to live.

There is a real problem with the Local Housing Allowance and UC. The LHA has not increased in several years, but the rents certainly have, which means that most people on UC are having to use money designated for their food and other living expenses, to pay towards rent. Many people on UC are actually working, as UC has also replaced working tax credit. I work full time, pay tax and NI and also receive UC to top that up to a living wage in London. My rent is slightly more than the LHA, so I just have to deal with that. There is an assumption that all people claiming some kind of benefit are unemployed scroungers, which just is not the case. I'm self employed and work at least 60 hours a week most weeks. I was on PAYE, teaching in schools, and doing agency work, but the pay was even worse, so now I teach privately, as well as freelance editing and performing. The scandalously high rents are part of the problem. Thankfully for me, I don't have prepayment meters to exacerbate that. Having briefly lived in a property that had them, I can confirm that they are the most expensive form of utility payment. As the poorest in society are the ones with these meters, this is clearly something that needs to change. The LHA for most areas is too low but rent caps are needed throughout the UK, as this is a self propelling problem. So called 'affordable' housing for rent being built, should be forced to be offered at a price in line with the LHA of the area. This certainly hasn't been the case in West London. Greenford Quays was built in conjunction with Ealing Council and was supposed to be for people who live and work in the area, but the smallest flat is £400 a month more than the LHA for the area, so definitely not affordable, and the same is true of the new flats in Ealing and Greenford. Most have these new builds have been bought by foreign investors and either lie empty, or are up for rent for eye watering amounts, which no-one earning less than 60k a year can afford. As most teachers, nurses, retail and hospitality workers etc. are not earning that kind of money, where are we all supposed to live?

Her three children are at school - which means that she is available to work during those school hours - so the key question is why is she not working, or rather - what reasons does she have to not work or re-train? There is so much to unpack here - but critically - Marr doesn't understand or have any experience of the UC system to actually question (in a meaningful way) what is going on here.
@colinhill9439
@colinhill9439 Год назад
Could be various reasons lack of jobs in the area and on low income you can not afford to travel outside the area. Like she said she was working in the current environment debt mounts very fast and with 3 kids I hardly think she had much of a safety net. I will give you an example I changed jobs for better pay about two months back the job went bust 3 days later due to them not be able to afford to stay open. It took just 6 weeks for my own buffer to go it was a 6 month buffer but as prices have raised fast rapidly the few months before that started eating in to it. Now I have been looking for a new role that will pay the bills for the past 4 weeks, I rent private like most these days as no social housing and I am facing eviction in about a week myself due to it. I have never been in this position before it happened fast regardless of my own planning. That said I am also working might sound weird But I also own an NGO providing free computers for underprivileged Children which I take no money from, but set up in January 2021. I am now looking at other ways to support families as we have helped thousand since I set it up. We get 0 funding so I have had to build a network of supporting businesses to keep it going. So now I am working 40 hour weeks and more free to help those in need although I face a bad situation myself and I can honestly tell you the situation is impossible right now for many. And I normally have decent Jobs with what would normally be a decent income higher than average. And so if it can happen to me it can happen to those that were less well off. Now here is the thing I would not take a job at 18k a year for instance or 24k a year when bills come in at average now close to 30k that is just to live as a single adult. Now I am highly experienced from very senior roles and have had better luck than quite a lot. So if I add 3 kids to my bills what would my costs be? Bills to just live are now higher than the average household income in the UK. So before you jump to a conclusion about her not working think of all circumstance as she said she has not long lost her job. And maybe business local to her who are also struggling can not afford to take on more staff due to not being sure they have a future themselves. You talk about critical thinking yet you lack any yourself really in your own statement and not really thought the situation through. Maybe she was on low income in work topped up by UC and a recent job loss would almost instantly put her in a very dangerous situation with housing and food etc. This so the reality for many and also for many of us that have not been there before and would not normally be. So consider all the grounds before making a statement and ensure you actually listen as you clearly missed the part where she said she was working but then something happened with the work place and the job went. So she was working till recently. But you just assumed because you did not actively listen which is wrong. And some jobs do not offer flexibility for School hours that will make it harder for her to find work. The father is not there to support so that limits her options massively also. Now that is critical thinking based on the facts of the conversation something you lacked to do yourself and accused Andrew of not doing.

This is the nub of the problem in this country that nobody talks about ,there is a mindset as I have seen in too many posts implying that a strong woman is someone that can find her way mainly into politics and have someone else look after the family if she has one . The whole system is broken and twisted pressure is put on mothers to work when they should have the choice to raise a family, choose full time or part rime employment, we have thatcher to thank for a complete mess in whatever areas you wish to look regarding ordinary Working people who are being used and abused cutting the family allowance if you have more children forcing mothers out to work , then people wonder why there are so many problems with drugs and knife crime years ago a mother was the actual head of the family and respected as such, now we are told we have to import young people as we don’t have enough of our own but we also import all of their problems as well ,the housing situation is an absolute abuse of ordinary working people which would need another couple of chapters to cover.

If her children are diagnosed with the conditions she mentioned, has she claimed disability benefits for them? If these were secured she could then go on to claim carers allowance which would increase her income. She will be claiming child benefit outside of her UC entitlement too. The situation wasn’t discussed in thorough detail. She can apply to the council for a DHP payment to make up the shortfall in rent. If she’s at risk of homelessness, she’ll have to remain at the property until the eviction process is completed, if she leaves before this the council will deem her as intentionally making herself homeless and won’t take any responsibility to place her and her children in temp accommodation until suitable accommodation can be found for them. Will the landlord not consider reducing the rent? I’m assuming she’s privately renting and because she exceeds the LHA for rent entitlement she’s left to struggle with the shortfall. She needs to speak to Shelter for advice and see if she can get referred for support when it comes to her mental health. In my experience no judge will award eviction to a landlord when the tenant is in her situation with children unless they absolutely have to.

There is no blame to lay this is a situation many are finding themselves in for no fault of their own. 80 percent of people in the UK had less than £500 savings in the bank before all this and she is a single mum 3 kids meaning limited on jobs she can have so likely low paid topped up with UC so would not even have a safety net in the first place very easy to get in trouble when things go wrong. The company could have closed loads are they are struggling as much as people well small and medium sized businesses are. This is going to become a very common story very very fast and will snowball with the way things are right now. This lady represents one of 10s of millions in the UK this is going to happen to by February of next year. The only people to blame are government and greedy energy and oil companies profiteering from this. So if you must assign blame then lay it where it rightly should at those that caused the situation to start with.

Learn to listen before commenting it shows your lack of intelligence and decency. And the fact you were just out right nasty tells me you are just trash. Which job might that be? contrary to popular belief, employers are not desperate for workers. Part time McJoblets maybe but not enough to pay £800 pm rent and feed 3 kids with needs.

@@stephanguitar9778 It's just that she never mentioned that a getting a job was possible or not. Didn't seem an option.Just complaining about not getting enough taxpayers money.

Surely the dad's should be paying for there kids rather than the taxpayer and government having to bail them out all the time?

@@mattd5073 Yes, just as well B.J has lots of free money flowing in or his half dozen kids would be in the same situation. Take away his unearned money and privileges and he is just another negligent dad in Wetherspoons or in the betting shop.
