Andrew Scott (best known as "hot priest" from 'Fleabag') plays con artist Tom Ripley in the Netflix adaptation of 'The Talented Mr. Ripley.' He says his job is to advocate for his characters, not judge them. He spoke with Terry Gross about finding soul in comedy and lightness in drama.

I feel like even a cursory Google search could've informed the host about Andrew's mother's passing, his acceptance speech at the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards was essentially a tribute to her. In any case; very bad move to keep harping on the subject of parental loss to someone very clearly still grieving.

I started to refer to that but could not see it on RU-vid. I saw it on I’gram It was wonderful. She would not have seen that, I doubt she would have watched broadcast.

@@helenc1943personally, I think the concept of doing a brief google would have alluded to this- eg. News articles. (I am unsure about if this is a show, who has a researcher but it most likely would have come up). Esp as it’s a long form interview. Whether or not, I think both parities handled it well but , I think maybe she could have not then followed up with the additional question about saying something to your parents & asking if his father had died.

Thank you for a wonderful interview Terry(?) questions enabled the revealing so much of Andrew’s intellect and fascinating analysis. I am surprised did not know of the recent death of Andrew’s mother. They were so close and he always spoke of her so fondly., she was his favourite critic. Having learned of it could Terry not have said “Oh, I am so sorry to hear that” or similar and moved on? Being the gentleman he is, he handled it very tactfully. He is not only a wonderful actor but a beautiful human being.

Andrew is such a decent human. I was disappointed in the interviewer's process. She spoke 80% of the time and gave little to Andrew.

I'm glad some airtime was given to All of Us Strangers, a great film from director/writer Andrew Haigh, with a superb performance by Andrew Scott. It's a pity there was no sound clip from the movie, as Scott's scenes with the three other fine actors -- Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell -- are terrific.

There's an interesting parallel to Parasite. Andrew Scott had to under how class works, and yet the typical American doesn't understand class as well as Andrew does (he's Irish, but Ireland is adjacent to the UK and the union of UK and Ireland have common cultural backgrounds such as India and Pakistan and Bangladesh). In Parasite, the poor family aspires to be the rich one, but there's classism in Korea, so somehow we see this in Ripley, yet it feels foreign to Americans, right? One of the interesting idea is that most Americans much more concerned about racism that they don't even think about classism or even think exists. What do you think, Terry?
