While many Americans plan to cast their vote for one of two major political parties, there are growing efforts to change the status quo. Andrew Yang, co-chair of the Forward Party, joins CBS News' Scott MacFarlane and Nikki Battiste on the push for alternatives to Democrats and Republicans.

A politically *moderate* party is not only a good idea, but a needed one. Both of the major parties are going down paths of extremism, and most people don't want that. Only when this extremism dies down will a moderate party be unnecessary...

@@Imorajna They've been anti-abortion for decades. I don't know exactly what "The woke agenda" means. They aren't anti-gay anymore, that entire platform position stopped after gay marriage was legalized. Support for "trickle down economics" *is not an extremist political position.* There's no evidence of a theocracy in the Republican Party. There's enough possibility of election fraud in 2020 that it's not extremism to demand an investigation, and the mainstream GOP sided with Biden on the issue. "Vaccine hesitancy" is not an extremist position. I wanted radical and extreme stuff, not your complaints and disagreements with the party.

I'm so glad that Alaska has non partisan primary and ranked choice voting. Nevada voters just got this passed too, hopefully they make it official. I want this too in my state of Pennsylvania!!

Maine also has RCV for federal races. It prevented vote-splitting in CD2 and allowed an unconventional Democrat, Jared Golden, to win in an R+10 district.

@Confederate Nation As an Independent myself I could explain the benefits the Forward Party can bring based on their platform and principles, but honestly your screen name and profile pic tell me you're likely not engaged with modern realities anyway. I love this man. Nothing deters him from advocating for those of us who have felt politically homeless (and hopeless) for decades. We need a party that looks at problems pragmatically and thinks outside of the box(es) we are currently offered. I'm in!

If both questions were on the ballot in our precinct anytime soon, I'd vote for ranked choice voting and against open primaries. (The exception, of course, would be that anyone could vote in the primary races for "non-partisan" positions. But ranked choice voting would address that too.)

The biggest problem with a third party is: The are 10 of them! With so many options, none of them can gain any ground. Consider these 4 parties: Green, Reform, Alliance and Forward. All 4 of these parties are very similar, desire similar things and are nearly identical to their core principles. However, each does express very minor differences, such as one desiring a living wage and another wanting guaranteed work for anyone who desires it. Both, are actually stepping stones to the same end. Illustrate to Educate has some great short videos explaining these various parties. Given very similar core values of the 4, imagine if they all combined into a single party? Call it, "the Progressive Party?"

The one major thing I do like about the Forward party, just like the Tea Party, they don't have presidential ambitions. Instead, they aimed their efforts at local congressional seats and that's where they did their damage. Yang is building a party from the bottom up. This is what I keep trying to explain to young progressives. If you wanna change the Democratic Party, you do it from the bottom up, not the top down. Putting Bernie Sanders in the WH is useless if he doesn't have a caucus behind him.

The least electable democratic candidate is often the most progressive one. Would you vote for them, or would you vote for the most moderate democrat in the race? Or would you choose to vote in your own party's primary, to vote for the true candidate of your choice? I live in Ohio, we have open primaries. I usually vote Democratic or Libertarian, but this past midterm cycle I voted in the Republican primary. That's where the candidates I disagreed with the most were running, so I voted for the candidates who I agreed with the most.

A four minute dialogue is not going to provide any in depth details or substance. If you are truly concerned with the current state of affairs and potential solutions, then don't waste your time making glib comments about talking heads who can't possibly expound in these short interviews. There are numerous long form interviews (at least with Yang, who is willing to give them) to get informed and not feel as though you are given nothing but empty promises and buzzwords.
