Why US Politics Is Broken - and How To Fix It | Andrew Yang | TED

The electoral system in the United States needs a redesign, says political reformer Andrew Yang. Exposing the flaws of a system built on poor incentives, he proposes a cost-effective overhaul inspired by primary elections already working in places like Alaska and advocates for ranked-choice voting, where voters can choose candidates in order of preference regardless of party, stemming the influence of extreme ideologies.

It is the way to establish one party rule. Some solutions not necessarily all the solutions is to balance the budget, which will over time eliminate inflation; dramatically decrease the permitting power of the federal government, many of these regulations are already done by the states, making federal permits redundant thus inflationary; allow health insurance to be sold across state lines which will bring down the cost of health insurance; school choice, which will allow kids trapped in failing schools a chance to escape. These are only some but they all have choice, freedom and prosperity. Peace.

The attitude that inspired a generation to abandon the family unit for a spot at the bar, so nearly every person of millennial age or younger has either no dad or no mom. @@kyleknight9686 Putting UBI in a party platform in the USA is pure performative politics with how government functions right now. The reason Yang talks about open primaries in this video, and not UBI, is because open primaries and dismantling the defacto two-party system and opens the path towards making it possible for UBI (and other amazing change) to actually become a reality in the US. As for the Palestine/Israel, I'm not going to touch that topic, first because I'm not even going to pretend that I know enough about the history of that conflict to give a good take, other than saying that anyone who is squarely on one side or the other is full of it.

PLEASE READ IF YOU LIKE RANKED-CHOICE: I encourage you to do research on STAR voting (score then automatic runoff). The idea is the same, increase third party viability but there are some minor tweaks which make it objectively better than ranked-choice. I'm surprised Yang brought up the 2022 Alaska election because it's a famous example of the center-squeeze effect and the fatal flaw of ranked choice. Basically, if you stacked Begich vs. Peltola and Begich vs. Palin and went through ballot by ballot, Begich would've won both match ups. He did this because he had a broad coalition of 2nd place votes but he got eliminated because he didn't get enough 1st place votes to make it through the first round. He was the candidate which closest represented the most people so in my opinion, that is the candidate who deserves to win. It's happened in multiple other elections as well and it happens frequently enough to where it's an issue. There are other problems as well, it's more complicated (there were miscounts in a California AND New York elections). And it requires the tallying to be centralized (less secure). STAR voting avoids a lot of these issues and it's more intuitive to vote because not only can you can which candidate you prefer, you can say HOW much you prefer them. Everyone wants to get rid of the two party system. There's a lot more I could get into but I hope I at least peaked your interest. TL;DR: I used to be a RCV supporter but after learning about STAR the choice was clear, it's just that less people know about it. Approval is good too.

Just a few states adopting Alaska's system of a Nonpartisan Open Primary system combined with Ranked Choice Voting for the general could significantly enhance how our government serves the people. If Bernie had been the nominee in 2016, a lot of America's recent messes could have been avoided. No Trump, no Republican supreme court, no dark money. Even if he didn't get to implement the changes he wanted, he would have prevented the recent decline. And it is a real decline I'm afraid. All of the Trump era changes will have to be reversed. This will take a decisive election, and some imagination -- and some luck.
