I swear the hype for Android updates is massively less than what it used to be. I remember seeing masses of videos covering each pre-release version in-depth in years gone by, but this time, I was barely aware 13 was even on the horizon until today

Here's a practical example of why I'm looking forward to setting apps to different languages: my phone is in French, but I live in Germany. When my boiler's monitoring app notifies me of an issue, I get the message in French, so I have no idea what the issue is called in German when I want to contact my technician. I have to change my entire phone's language setting to be able to see the error message in German, and then report it to the technician. And then I get to switch the phone language again 😅
@felixsanhueza

What I would really love is for the keyboard to recognize the language in which a person has written me, and change accordingly so I can just go ahead and start typing without having to change.
@deepakbisht4957
@deepakbisht4957 2 года назад
Well you don't need to change the app language for that. All you can do is take the screenshot of the notification and you can get the translate option directly after taking the screenshot. If the translation option is not there just go to the galaxy and open a screenshot in Google lens and click translate it will automatically translate the French language app screenshot to german...

@@deepakbisht4957 That's a good idea, but Google translate may not he good enough to know some of the components that fail in my fancy heat pump 😅 For example: the word palette is more broadly something completely different than what is in the appliance.

The biggest feature I had been looking forward to on Android 13 is the native braille support built into TalkBack. However, I and many people in the blind community are very disappointed to discover that Google still has not added support for the modern Hid braille standard, which has been around for several years now. This means that people using braille displays that support this standard cannot use braille on Android. Speaking from the perspective of someone who relys on braille for communicating with people, I find this lack of support from Google extremely disheartening.
@TechDove
@TechDove 2 года назад
How does it even work? Can you even read my comment?
@waylee264
@waylee264 2 года назад
@@TechDove talkback works by speaking the items on the screen as you drag your finger around the screen. so with talkback, it reads the comments to me. the braille display essentially does the same thing except that it shows in braille what talkback is speaking. a braille display is a machine that displays text in braille by raising and lowering pins in a flat surface. the pins form patterns that represent text. the braille display connects to android via bluetooth. there's a braille display setting in talkback that one must enable in order to use a braille display with talkback.

@@waylee264 I've never spoken to someone whom is blind before, if you don't mind me asking, what is it like? Did you ever have sight or did you lose it at some point? What is the most difficult thing about it, and are there any positives? Like maybe your sense of smell, or hearing is better (if that's a thing) Sorry, I don't mean to be rude or anything, I'm just very curious.
@waylee264
@waylee264 2 года назад
@@TechDove I don’t mind. I was born with some useable vision. I lost it due to detached retinas and glaucoma. What’s it like being blind? For the most part, I don’t think about it on a day to day basis. I just live my life like anyone else. I go to college, cook my own food, travel, etc. I use a lot of assistive technology and adaptive equipment to accomplish tasks. For example, I use my braille display and computer for homework. I use my white cane to get around. Probably the biggest challenge for me as a blind person is not being able to drive. Public transportation isn’t always reliable. The other biggest challenge is somewhat limited employment opportunities. Unless you go to college and major in something that offers field work opportunities it will be even harder to find a job. Depending on how severe the vision impairment is, you more than likely would not be able to do the jobs that many people start out with, such as working at starbucks, dunkin donuts, etc. Those are the two biggest challenges I face. Other than that, being blind doesn’t really bother me that much, though I can't say the same for other people. Everyone copes with it differently. Some of the positives about being blind, well for me at least, it's made me more resilient. I often have to prove to people that I am capable of doing things. Being blind has made me work harder for the things I want than perhaps I might have had I been sighted. It's made me more empathetic towards people. I’m less likely to judge people based on their appearance. These are just a few exapples. Also, my hearing is not better. I just rely on it more. For example, I listen to the traffic patterns to tell when it is safe to cross the street.

App specific language support is awesome! My native language is German but I very much prefer to use my phone in English cause English is the native language of the OS and I'm a big fan of language acquisition through immersion. However, I'm glad that I can now use apps like the journey planer for my local public transportation agency in its original language as well as the German version of Google Maps cause the English A.I. voice doesn't speak out German street names.

I just bought an A53 5G as a low cost way to try out Android for a possible move from iOS. I'm having fun with Android 12 mainly because of the infinite customisability of the system. It's a tough thing to move from one to the other but I'm getting used to Android by the day and think I may be finally able to wean myself away from Apple. I feel there is much better value in the Android phone world and I'm willing to take a shot now that updates are available for a few years on the Samsung top tier and some of the mid tier phones. BTW, with a nice case you'd never know the A53 was not a top tier phone. I'm looking forward to the Android 13 update.

The reason the language setting for individual apps is so popular, is for the following reason: Many apps are written by english speakers and don't have a German/French/Spanish etc. version. So what happens is, the app automatically uses google translate and individually translates the text based on your phones system language setting. This is extremely annoying because it gives out gibberish many times, since single lines of text often miss context for an accurate translation. Most people are fine with english even though it's not their first language. So before you had to change the phones system language to english just to understand what's going on in some apps. Now it seems you can set individual apps to english, which is most welcome.
@TheGoukaruma

On my headset app there was a notice: German :"20% links" Direct translation: "20% on the left side" original text/meaning: "20% left". It's more confusing than if they just use the english text.

I'm an Android developer. As far as I know, an app itself never auto translates. It always goes to the default language set by the dev, if it can't find the language your phone is in. (Which is English in most cases). So if you see weird translations, that's probably because the devs or product owners were lazy and used google translate themselves for the actual translations.

I think Android doesn't need the "big number updates" as much as back in the days. A lot of things in Android can update without the system update, like Google play system, dialer, launcher, Bluetooth somehow (as I was told), security patches, camera, etc. And most of those updates, also update on older Android versions. That's amazing! Of course, we wouldn't be able to _trust_ that it's using correct labeling, but finding likely safe foods in a sea of unsafe ones would be a huge timesaver, instead of having to check the labels for *everything*. (This is especially true for allergies that are even more prevalent, like soy, where it takes several hours of careful and diligent shopping to find just a handful of items, with entire categories of items not even possible to buy in many markets, such as bread in almost any US supermarket. Or, really, almost anything that's processed in any way.) Hopefully they bring this to other countries than just the US too. But it's Google, so it's probably only going to be available in English and only in Silicon Valley for years, if it ever makes it to any non-Googler's phone.

I'm really looking forward to the separate language app setting. Listening to Japanese songs on RU-vid music is a pain if they convert the native letters into Romaji. @@Hoffman117_ Yep YT music does have that feature to romanize the Japanese texts if the publisher request for it. However, I would like to have an option to switch between the 2 as some cases of Romanization are not very intelligible. An example would be a song called Dr.レイテンシーの眠れなくなる瞳 being romanised to DOKUTAREITENSHINONEMURENAKUNARUHITOMI. There are no space between the words, and the letters were all capitalised. Per app language is a game changer. I'm French but like using my software in English for multiple reasons. However, some banking and transport apps will follow the English parameter, making things a bit weird (as the English version are more thought around them being used by travellers and foreigners). It also makes sense considering some apps like Discord provide in-app language selection. Having it at the OS level, like notification channels, make way more sense to me, as it's an OS-level parameter rather than an application level setting. However, it sucks a lot that Google, for some reason, decided to have developers opt-in to this rather than being the default. It was possible during the beta to change language for every app. Now, only a handful support it (and not even Google apps support it ...). I'm fearful it's going to end up as a dead feature, if the developers have to change a parameter when building their app. It's a rather niche use case, so not all developers will think about it, but it's a much needed QOL feature.

@dawoodilyas9197
@dawoodilyas9197 2 года назад
Okay so I'm an Android Developer. The reason why they are asking the developers to opt-in to this feature is because not all apps support it. When the developers want to provide multilingual support for their app, they literally have to provide the translation for EVERY SINGLE WORD/ SENTENCES that they are displaying in the UI for the desired language. Also, it's not easy especially for legacy apps that have been in development for years. So, the obvious choice here was to allow the developers to provide multilingual support and then opt-in into the experience.

It deserved its hype. Since it comes to various iPhone models at the same time whereas you have to pray that phones get the update. Call me a sheep, but if the iPhone SE 1 got iOS 16, I hope Pixel can make the same good thing for all of its fans. There is no such thing as “hype” when it’s the truth that features can be used as a update. But yes, default apps need to be updated in the App Store.

Honestly, I love One UI. I think is does so much right, but seeing Android 13's animations, compared to the One UI 5 Beta, I just wish Samsung would invest some time to make the UI more fluid with better, not glitchy animations.

That's like the only con for one UI, even miui looks smoother than oneui, while using swipe navigation

I remember having language settings on a per app basis was one of the reasons I rooted my phone in like 2016. After getting new phones, though I didn't have the time or motivation to root again (+guarantee problems etc), so I just kind of gave up and learnt to deal with major language inconveniences because most apps just cannot deal with 2 languages. Things like having a grocery app in local language, but having the phone in English for example. I've tried so many apps over the years that were praised highly everywhere, just to find out that their localisation is so bad, that it becomes unusable.

I think USB C is another huge win for Android. Being able to charge everything from laptop 💻 to phone 📱to speaker 🔊with the same cable 🚠 is game 🎯 changing 🚼

Samsung one UI is way better then stock Android IMO. I was a former Essential Phone and Pixel 5 owner...but since I did use one UI with my first Samsung Galaxy device, my productivity has gone up quite a bit, it's a lot more convenient what you can do with the side bar on the right ( Snipping tool, screenshot, etc) but also the multitasking and the picture editing options.
