I feel old when I torrent all my content and play it on my TV with a usb port... am I ?
@PakiiiBux
@PakiiiBux 9 лет назад
I do that lol I don't know why the fuck people pay for stuff , I have an old TV with absolutely no features just 2 HDMI ports but its 1080i and I have a ps3 and watch all my stuff on it with a USB , also Chromecast would do the job for me for mirring my portable screens onto the TV ( also have mircast from an blue ray player ). SO WTF IS THE POINT IN ALL THIS SMART TV BULLSHIT??????????????????? You can even hook up ur laptop to the TV via HDMI and do anything you can imagine for free....
@matthewwatt2295
@matthewwatt2295 9 лет назад
JDMR34 Why would people pay for stuff? Maybe because it's actually legal and people prefer to support content creators? (and also, having a chromecast constantly available for playing from a phone is far more convenient than plugging your laptop into the TV every time you want to watch on a big screen)

Yes, please! My current "smart" TV takes half a minute to _boot_ before I can watch anything. Then there are a ridiculous amount of menus with different buttons doing different things depending on which menu or mode I am in. All TV signals come through HDMI from the cable box anyway, so I almost only use _its_ remote. The only "smart" feature I use is watch files from a USB stick, but I could just as well use a fanless NUC or cheaper dedicated streaming box for that.

Foojack100 You will regret this decision the day your home gets involved in a hostage situation and the Special Forces can't use their permit to spy the situation from the inside via NSA backdoors. By purposely buying dumb TVs you are not only supporting terrorism, but also endangering your family by making your home a target! While you're at it, you should also order a surveillance system (that inexplicably arrives a week late) to give your home the protection it needs. Seriously, you might as well get a smart TV (not the crappy ones). Seeing you have a RU-vid account, I figured you probably use the internet and if you use the internet, the NSA knows everything about you and everyone in your family, VPN or not. No need to downgrade your living quality out of fear of constant surveillance, since that is already the norm and there's nothing you can do about it, unless you unexpectedly abandon all electronics and civilization and decide to start living in a forest that gives you ample protection from satellite surveillance from that day onward...
@AlexRolandHuszar

Findecanor on RU-vid my dumb tv can watch files from an USB stick as well, although quite limited amounts, it only likes FAT and doesn't play files like mkv

Never had cable or satellite tv. My parents never saw the value in it and even to this day still use bunny ears. We never had to cut the cord because we never had one. Ironic that in a way that was both behind and ahead of the times. My parents still have quite a collection of VHS (some bought, some recorded from TV). They have made some tech changes such as adding a DVD and Bluray player (given to them as gifts) and they are slowly coming onto Netflix although they only stream when other family is around to operate the remote.

I prefer plain tv. Heard if things like processor fries,while the panel is perfectly.. tv still wont play. Usually tv panel outlast all other components. So youre better off buying non smart tv. If u want smat tv, buy a tv addon. or raspberri. Connect it to tv using hdmi or something and you have yourself pc/smarttv/tv However failing of one component wont brick the whole thing.
@Huvada

The thing I would love to have is faster TVs. Some smart TVs take ages to boot up completely. And even though the UI might not be bad, the latency between pressing a button and the TV responding is sometimes extremely long.

I'd like a little breakdown of "how does Windows 10 compare to Windows 7", ESPECIALLY in terms of administrative and configuration options, since those got severely limited in Windows 8(.1). Also news in terms of everyday usability (Explorer, managing tasks, cusomization options, multi-monitor workspaces) and software support.
@momocblack

***** it isnt limited at all in windows 8, it way more advanced than windows 7. Windows 10 fixe the 1 main problem the metro interface on all devices. The rest is mainly all little tweaks. Having migrated all my computers to windows 8.1, when I go back to windows 7 I dont like it. And with start8 as a start menu I prefer windows 8.1 to 7 or 10 (I have two computer on the latest release preview) And I will migrate but still. I liked windows 8.1 with Start8 and displayfusion of course, there the bestest softwares for customization

Also, taking into account the model and class of MicroSD card (class 10, ideally), can make a difference. It's easy to overclock a RPi if you feel that you need to. But out of the box, with a RPi 2 Model B (1GB RAM, ARMv7 Quad-core 900Mhz, Mali-400 GPU), you can have smooth menu animations and video playback in, as Saul said, a custom tailored OS--Kodi (formerly XBMC) or a derivative such as, again, OSMC. I haven't tried Xbian.

A decision in buying a tv is thinking that the TV manufacturers built software is any good. I would recommend anyone buying a TV to only look for 1) the Panel Panel Panel, and 2) the Ports - make sure you have enough. Everything else should be covered with something like android tv. Manufacturers will ditch the software in a heartbeat when the next model comes out leaving you with an out of date "Smart Tv" which is now a "Dumb Tv".

@0M9H4X_Neckbeard

Passiveagression It's not the cheapest of its kind, but IMO it's worth it. You get the least latency possible, the little interface it has of its own (Microsoft logo and instructions how to pair) are classy looking and easy to understand, and it comes with a USB extension cable in case your TVs USB port is far apart from its HDMI port (the dongle needs USB to be powered since HDMI connectors don't deliver power)
@basdfgwe
@basdfgwe 9 лет назад
0M9H4X Yeah you're spot on, its surprising how much the smarts in the "smart tv" add to the price. When an alternative that does more than the smart tv costs so much less than the smarts of the smart tv.

So apparently they never heard of android tv boxes. Now, they have lower to medium end chips but they do their job excellent even on 4k TV. Hell some of them run Linux distros on them. There are a win 8.1 boxes for media consumption even. I'm not judging the decision of this channel owner to make videos mainly of top end products on the other channel, but completely ignoring a part that android tv boxes are existing for years now, is just plain stupid.

@wildgoosespeeder 9 лет назад
0:00 - 1:00, these are reasons why to get a cable (preferably HDMI) to hook up from your computer to a TV (or wireless equivalent) to make your TV more usable. Traditional TV is hanging by a thread. It is a relic of the past being preserved just for profit and not for any real benefit in today's world. All you really need is a computer monitor capable of HDMI in and you are all set. Essentially that is what modern TVs are; oversized computer monitors. Smart TVs are redundant and offer nothing good.

@chillinchum

wildgoosespeeder Unless you don't own a modern computer. I'm not joking either, tablet and phone solutions have allowed some people to never own a laptop or regular computer ever again, and since they use them for work, they might feel they shouldn't use anything like netflix on them. When and if they work well, smart tvs may indeed be a perfectly valid solution for some people for the present day media. If I didn't use my computer for games, streaming and video editing, I wouldn't be able t justify getting a big block of a computer next time I upgrade, since all it would be would be small office type files, and content streaming I would do, and tablet with a laptop style keyboard would do ok for all of my needs, and a proper smart tv would mean no more connecting wires each time either. Simply put, it would be cheaper, and that's a very, very, very important factor for many.
@wildgoosespeeder
@wildgoosespeeder 9 лет назад
chillin chum Traditional computers were designed to be upgraded by having their components swapped out as needed. If there is missing modern functionality, there are add-ons, upgrades, and alternatives you can apply to it as a makeshift solution if a proper implementation is not affordable or practical. Smart TVs don't have that quality. It also depends how tech-savvy someone is. I guess Smart TVs do have a place, but is often slower than taking matters into your own hands. That's why I think Smart TVs aren't worth it.
@chillinchum
@chillinchum 9 лет назад
wildgoosespeeder Only the tech savvy upgrade anymore. most people? "Time to buy a new phone/tv!" We are not most people, the day to day business of big corporations mean nothing to us, nor are they concerned about us either.

chillin chum Seems like people's view on technology isn't very good or would rather take the much lazier approach of just paying a middle man to do the building rather than take the time to understand why and how a computer works so they are in more control what features they want. A Raspberry Pi is super tiny and works perfect as a media center.

If you can get a dumb TV with specs that are considered good for a few coming years, then buy one now. Otherwise you'll be stuck with a TV that will charge for the smart features in a few years time, because yes, that'll come.

cable TV is useless, i just get a really cheap PC, plug it in to a massive moniter, and use that for TV, or i hook up my gaming PC and an Xbox controller, and use that to play racing games.

Streaming sticks are far better than any smart TV. They are cheap and do the same thing as a smart TV.

Linus, all you had to say is that a android tv box basically makes your tv a tablet. Simple as that, it gives you the same features as a tablet, which leads to apps and services like KODI or Netflix. All this shit you said will just confuse the consumer.

I know this is old, but Android TV isn't just on smart TVs. You can always buy an Android TV box to plug into a TV. It's actually better since smart TVs typically have slow hardware, while the TV boxes are faster with better hardware.
