Definitely, my boss is an internist primary care physician (by all means a "lower" earning physician) but because she owns a large individual private practice her income is $436000 per year and growing (she's only 48 years old). This doesn't include her savings and investments and definitely does not include how much she could sell her practice for lol

It’s not unusual. If you’re reputable, you can own multiple practices and have income sharing agreements with doctors. I’ve met doctors who make way more than 1.3 mill but have like 7-8 locations.

@@Scarsofevil Not medical but I once dated a dental-aspiring student at undergrad. He interned for a dentist with 3 practices in our school area. He said that was his dream. To make money from having multiple practices. I don't know what his current situation is but I do know that he did end up becoming a dentist. I forget what kind but it is something specialized, since that's where the money is at.

It's the tough part. Most of my friends who are in the medical field opted for "easier" paths. Not to say ANY job or education in the medical field is easy. But most of my friends decided to forgo becoming a doctor and went towards nursing degrees instead, or midwifery, etc. Still gives them some financial freedom, they can pay off their loans in 1-2 years if they double-down on their shifts and sacrifice A TON those initial years of working, and then they are able to move forward with their lives faster (buying a house, getting married, having kids). Whereas my physician friends are all still in the same boat you are. That said, you're playing the long game. If you play your cards right and have a good head on your shoulders, you will most definitely win the financial freedom game, big time. It's hard to go nearly a decade or more in this boat of debt and low income, but once you are done, you can really go far. Keep at it!!!!

Physicians are not known for being financially savvy, any more than they are known for being good aircraft pilots. Their comments on financial things are usually a bit panicked and off base. Most people in their twenties (in all lucrative professions) do not make good money with two significant exceptions: software and sex work. In business and law, the big money arrives in 40s-50s after a long, relatively lower paid apprenticeship after graduate school. This can last over 10 years. Medicine, overall, pays better than any other available jobs. There is a myth that other jobs easily pay 200-400k... other than big 4 software, that is a myth. Particularly in rural areas or 2-3 tier cities. Doctors often act like their work is a financial sacrifice. Sometimes true; usually untrue, and poorly researched.

@@777jones not to mention to work in the Big 4 companies you'll likely have to move to an area with high cost of living such as the Bay Area. So while they earn a lot, the cost of living is a big chunk of that income. They'll still be able to save a lot in the end tho.

It's that kind of weight that I could never do this sort of job. I'm emotionally sensitive so I would just be a mess and you can't have that in the medical field. Kudos to everyone who does this line of work for sure! Everyday heroes.

@@jasmineleopard7593 That sucks. I've had 8 brain surgeries and never the same anesthesiologist twice so I've had less than personable ones but they were all polite and kept me alive so even the ones not as great are acceptable to me!

Ive had an anesthesiologist say that to me and my mother as well before. Very interesting how true that really is.

All of them have been very nice to me, ive yet to meet one with a bad sense of humor or a bad attitude.

I used to do physiology research and one of the things we measured was inhalation/exhalation of volume/composition etc and tied it with a whole bunch of other measurements. But we rarely controlled it, as it was an outcome measure. I was at an OR for a vascular case and was chatting it up with the anesthesiologist about how perfect the tidal volume curves looked and I asked why it looks so textbook. He was like "Oh you mean this?" as he slightly changed the tidal volume. I quickly realized that they have full control of the respiratory function. Which...obviously makes sense but never quite realized.

If she was going to blow that much in one go, it would have been more beneficial to invest the money. It would be money that made money. Not money that could be gone in an instant if a careless dry cleaner has an "oops".

bihbhkjbnlk look I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with your statements. But I feel like you really missed the tone of my original comment. Paying off loans, investing, none of it matters if she’s unhealthy. In general I feel like if something is “in the budget” spend the money and don’t fuss about what other people think. But even she notes the behavior/purchase was unhealthy and extreme as she’s a vegetarian now sleeping under dead rodent. So yep, that money would have been better spent on therapy. Cause her overall mental health is worth more than anything she has in the bank and all she’s done is spend a boatload of money on something that clearly doesn’t sit 100% right with her.

As counterintuitive as it sounds, having debt is beneficial in some cases. Closing accounts could actually HURT your credit score.

If that $80,000 has an interest rate of 4% then she would guarantee herself a profit of $3,200 in saved interest this year alone and get to claim the large payment of her student loans on her taxes. Now, if she invested that $80,000 and had a really good year and she made 10% on that money , she would gain $8,000. This $8,000 would be taxed at 20% ($1,600) due to her incredibly high income. So, to me, if I had a net worth of over $6 million and had an income of over $1 million a year, keeping the student loans around for a chance (remember she could easily lose money if she invested in something that went down in value) to profit an additional $3,200, is borderline insanity. That's just how my mind looks at it.

Especially when justifying it because of interest rate difference, while spending $75k on a blanket, she earns high income her and that advisor seem to not grasp the knowledge of debt. I believe... if you work in a hospital, there are some limits, but honestly those limits are shitty. You'd have to be working a super duper crazy number of hours before someone says, okay, go home, go sleep. It's a terribly stressful work environment and I hope someday someone can figure out a way to make it all work without doctors and nurses having to work around the clock on really long shifts that seem neverending. It's not good for the patient or the medical staff. Nobody likes being sleep-deprived.

@@anti-gravityseal7162 No way. UG is 5.05% and Grad (med school also) is 6.6%. This is direct unsubsidized loans. Medical school student borrow absurd amount of money in comparison to UG (no other grad program comes close except law school). These loans alone don't cut it. You need to borrow grad plus on top of these loans which has an interest rate of > 7%. That absurdly low interest rate is most likely due to loan consolidation with a private lender. However, I've never seen loan consolidation percentages that low, they are usually 3% if you are lucky!

Mine did.....8% student loan was considered a good deal. Things are a lot harder now, though I really think it's relative; we had double digit interest and inflation, gas shortages, and no internet.

That would probably explain the bulk of it though if she can draw an audience wouldn't surprise me if she can get other speaking engagements too, that can pay literally thousands of dollars per hour depending on the size of the venue too pack out some of the larger venues and north of $50k is possible. Funny that being good at getting tons of people to part with their money tends to make you kinda valuable. Also there is that $4.6 million portfolio reasonably well managed that is several hundred thousand per year on it's own 10% ROI before tax isn't unheard of.

As a person who has lived on one of outer islands, doctors who come to Hawaii have the wrong perception of "location." They think of it as sunshine, clear blue water, palm trees etc. However, they get a rude awakening to how isolating it can be, not many good schools for their kids, not many places to shop, not many things to do. I knew multitudes of doctors that come and go. A large part of it is the above mentioned reasons. Its also worth mentioning the cost of living is nuts. They are paid the same as mainland doctors which is adds to them not staying there. The need is dire on the islands and the best way to recruit docs is to get those who were born on the islands, they have the highest chance of practicing on the islands.

When I first met my boyfriend, he was surprised I didnt care that he was a physician. Likewise, I know he works long hours and deserves every oenny he makes and then some. He does a lot for our community. Barely anyone gives him enough appreaction. Icing on the cake is that Im in the nursing field. Somewhat of a toxic combo. Not towards each other but people make really weird assumptions. But hes a great guy! Im so lucky.

Angela M, I found that nurses and nurse techs are the hardest on both myself and my husband due to his job title because of the assumption of “rich doctors” and “nurses work harder and more hours,” both not true. Nurses work hard and long hours, but so do the doctors. My husband would have to bring work home with him, non-paid work, many times.

Yeah it’s weird. I don’t make anything at the moment(thanks cancer) but I freely tell people how much I make a year. I made $60,000 a year(I live Australia). But my partner, father and brother on the other hand hate telling people. I don’t even know how much my father and brother make. It’s crazy.

It's definitely a taboo to speak about it for most people. I'll share if asked, but don't volunteer it for everyone. It was recently an issue at work where 2 people were discussing their salary in the break room and someone from a different dept making less overheard and told their boss who took it up the chain which resulted in our boss tightening up and handing out more write ups. In situations like that I understand not speaking aloud about it.

In these women’s cases, they are prominent employees of organizations that serve people. This info can be used against them, or to compete with them. It would be a breach of trust. I don’t share my pay either, because it would just be more hassle for me.

I made like €5000 last year, which is more than $5000. I did this in the weekends and some evenings. Working a bit extra during the holiday. Granted if you are lucky you could rent a room for that, maybe a small apartment, but obviosly made more during summer so not really. And then all income would be gone

It depends on what you want in your future there are sacrifices for both lifestyles and it depends what you and your partners decide we all have things we love and want. Also there’s this theory that having kids poor somehow is a bad thing for your kids. I find it’s the opposite they are more respectful if they learn how to struggle with you then have everything handed to them

There's no specific education requirement to go to medical school other than to have a 4 year bachelor's degree. Some undergrad schools don't even offer a specific pre-med program (mine didn't). But most people I knew took biology, chemistry and other health or life sciences majors for their undergraduate education. From Study.com (specifically about Anesthesiologists): "There is no official degree required for admission to medical school, and many baccalaureate programs can adequately prepare students for this endeavor. Some schools prefer graduates with a 4-year degree in natural sciences, which should include classes in physics, organic and inorganic chemistry, anatomy, and biology." From the Occupational Outlook Handbook (about Physicians and Surgeons in general): "Most applicants to medical school have at least a bachelor's degree, and many have advanced degrees. Although no specific major is required, students usually complete undergraduate work in biology, chemistry, physics, math, and English. Students also may take courses in the humanities and social sciences. In addition, some students volunteer at local hospitals or clinics to gain experience in a healthcare setting." Most universities can guide you to the types of majors that are best suited for medical school, if they don't have a pre-med program. You can also look for anesthesiologists on LinkedIn and see what their undergrad degrees were (if they have it listed)! Elizabeth Adilee Wyman this actually isn’t true at all. Even if you can’t afford it (most can’t), you can borrow everything on loans, which is why so many physicians have crazy loan burdens. However, the salary is high enough to be able to pay them off eventually, even if it sucks. There’s a shortage purely because medical school spots are extremely limited, and so are residencies. People are killing themselves to get into schools, taking years off after college just to boost their applications. If medical school and residency spots increased, you’d have as many as needed.
