Plenty of television viewers will remember the on-screen relationship between Andy Taylor and Helen Crump on the beloved 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. However, not everyone knows the real life romance that the show’s two stars shared behind the scenes. This romance was notable not only for the immense passion involved, but also for the fact that it was a secret affair. Of course, the two stars in question were Andy Griffith and Aneta Corsaut. The two stars hit it off almost immediately, and were entangled in an extramarital affair pretty much by the time that their on-screen counterparts were dating. Although Aneta was single at the time, Andy had been married for over 15 years and had several children.

The relationship between Andy Griffith and Aneta Corsaut was atypical for an extramarital affair in many ways. Andy proposed marriage to Aneta multiple times over the course of their romance, but Aneta always turned him down. Despite this, they remained lovers, and close friends once their romance ran dry. Although the two eluded marriage in real life, their on-screen counterparts in The Andy Griffith Show became married in the spin-off show Mayberry R.F.D.
Furthering the relationship between the two stars, all of Aneta’s final roles before her death came as a result of her friendship with Andy. She was given minor roles in Andy’s successful 1980s drama Matlock, culminating in a final appearance during the show’s final year, 1992. After this, Aneta reprised her role as Helen Crump in 1993’s The Andy Griffith Show Reunion before passing away from cancer in 1995. She was never married, and left behind no children. Join Facts Verse as we uncover Aneta Corsaut’s untimely death and affair with Andy Griffith.

I loved the one where Opie had a crush on Helen and Barney (not knowing it was Helen) pulled out his book of poems, had Opie call his "girlfriend" on the phone and Barney would recite one line at a time with his hand over the phone and Opie would repeat it to Helen. When Helen finally asked if someone was there WITH him, Opie said "Nobody, just Barney". Well when Opie left to go and see Helen (she asked him if he could come right over") the phone at the Sheriffs Office rang and Barney answered and Helen went volcanic on him! Don Knotts ALWAYS could make me laugh with those faces of his. What a GREAT show that was and I still watch it weekdays/weeknights on TVLand from 4 pm to 8 pm.

Just watched some of these again & I love all the actors. Watching Ron's acting & realizing just how talented he was at such a young age then as Richie . I grew up watching him & the movies he's produced. He's really had a huge impact on most of our lives. Of course all the actors did but I'm most impressed by Ron. He's always exuded wholesome kindness, gentleness & major talent. Glad he decided to share his work & life with us . Love those good clean shows. Much respect to them all. Miss those days.

Pretty sure that was the writer's choice. Andy also got jealous and petty, like when she had that male teacher friend visiting. Of course, it was because of other characters convincing him to be worried.

Mark, I completely agree. Anita was attractive and a great actress, but I always thought the Helen Crump character was a bit acidic! Especially the first episode she was in where she reads Andy the riot act over the misunderstanding about the boys not wanting to study history. Again, she was a great actress, but Helen Crump never appealed to me. Peggy however was beautiful, more domestic and charming. Her character was far more attractive in every way.

She appeared in the 4 episodes and that was it. Aneta first appeared on the show in mid-season 3. Joanna was already gone by the time Aneta arrived. Aneta was only supposed to be in one episode. I enjoyed this show so much, but there's a part of me that is sickened by the fact that seven children and their mother were left because of an affair. It's sad that so little regard is paid to the family who most likely suffered a great deal from the loss of their head of household. I suppose we're supposed to think of this actress as doing the right thing by not marrying this man to possibly save her own reputation.
@Lady-Carmakazi
@Lady-Carmakazi 2 года назад
There were probably more problems within the marriage than just infidelity as many marriages can & do over come that. People that worked with them both said they'd been squabbling a lot prior to his cheating. He may've strayed because they weren't getting along & he was already unhappy. Then again who knows maybe his wandering is the reason for the fighting. And stardom itself could have something to do with it. Women will throw themselves at him full well knowing he was married. But I'm with you I don't like seeing children or spouses suffer due to infidelity but it sounds like they might've had some issues prior to that. Sometimes splitting up can be the best thing for all involved including the children especially if they're witnessing a lot of bickering.

All this judgement seems odd considering the divorce rates in our culture. It wasn't right of him, but understandable in a toxic relationship. His wife probably even knew where they stood, I don't know that it was a behind her back type issue, but due to their positions in society mutually stuck it out in a loveless marriage.

We're dealing with the same spirit that accompanies tyranny and precedes genocide. It's bewildering to me how many people are walking lockstep with the false narratives being used to usher in the "Great Reset". This will not end well...People are slaves, full blown slaves, and like a house slave, they will continue to say that you are slave too, and get upset if you feel or act otherwise, but the slave that they want you to be now. Anyone heard of Stockholm Syndrome? I suggest google that. This is what we see now. 95% of the population refuse to see or don't care to look inside their soul. Thanks for a great video about Aneta Corsaut, I always like seeing her on the Andy Griffith Show. Those piercing eyes, so gorgeous. Also, I was wondering, Facts Verse, if you'd consider doing a look into the 50's-60's TV actress Judy Meredith (aka Judy Boutin) who was discovered by George Burns and began her career on the George Burns and Gracie Allen (television) Show. An aspect of her career I find most compelling is that despite being born and raised in Oregon, it wasn't until she adopted a Texas accent/personality on the show that she was offered a contract by Universal Studios and would go on to play a lot of roles in westerns such as Wagon Train and Bonanza. She even appeared on The Ozzie & Harriet Show, and she would eventually marry TV and film director, Gary Nelson. Just this little bit I know of her makes me find her very intriguing, and I absolutely loved her on the Burns/Allen show as "Bonnie Sue McAfee."

The main characters on the show would never admit it, but Griffith was very hard to work with. A former production assistant told a Hollywood radio station that Griffith often "threw fits" when things didn't go his way on the set. Though Elinor Donahue praised Griffith during interviews, a close friend of Donahue wrote that Elinor would "come home crying" after altercations with Griffith while filming the show.

The actress that played Howard's date (don't remember her name ), is on the video for a few seconds starting at 2:48. I wish they would have made her a regular--her character had a sweet disposition. It's the episode where Howard and his date stayed overnight at a cabin with Andy and Helen. Helen became very jealous when Andy and Howard's date/girlfriend got lost in the woods together.
