They were identical to Balaam and Jezebel of the OT (Num. 25:1-2; 31:16) The believers in Ephesus condemed the deeds of the Nicolaitans in Revelation 2:6 but there's no further details that might point to the Nicolaitans’ identity or teachings. There is not a piece of evidence to support your claim that these were clergymen exercising authority over the laity based on the incorrect use of its etymology. Consult any scholarly work referring to the Nicolaitans, and you'll see that your claim holds no water.

@@KevinLee-zv5bb you're totally wrong! It a system that subtly crept in the church. It a system that kills the function of the believers and distracts and even dethrone the Headship of Christ. It a system. The Greek word is composed of two words, one meaning conquer or be victorious over and another meaning common people, secular people, or laity. Thus, it means conquering the common people, being victorious over the laity. Nicolaitans, then, must refer to a group of people who esteem themselves higher than common believers. This was undoubtedly the hierarchy adopted and established by Catholicism and Protestantism. The Lord hates the works, the behavior, of these Nicolaitans, and we must hate what the Lord hates.

This is taken from the Truth Lessons, Level 4, Vol. 1 on Chapter 15 section 2. "The church in Ephesus hated the works of the Nicolaitans, which the Lord also hated (v. 6). We could go over the verses to exegete them properly. "We carefully and closely study Greek literature." RE: Really? Which Greek textbook are you studying? And show me a reference where Witness Lee or Watchman Nee came up with his conclusions. I'll wait. How is this not a sheer example of the Blending bros controlling the churches globally?
