The chick hatched yesterday evening at around 7.42, but I missed it by 10 minutes or so. This morning, I was able to watch the chick for a minute or so, then the unthinkable happened.
Tom arrived at the nest, shortly after Angel left, and looked very confused when he saw this little thing in the egg cup. I will give here my thoughts (my personal interpretation) - viewers who have different ideas can express them in the comments area as long as the tone is friendly and polite.
I couldn't see clearly what Tom was doing (I also recorded from the long range camera), but I think that, being so young and a first time dad, he did not understand what he was looking at. He must have thought that something alien was in the egg cup and eventually dragged the creature to the side, causing its death in the process.
Angel returned and, seeing her chick there, started vocalising in a pitiful manner - some of her cries must have been heard by Tom (not sure how far he flew from the nest). She carried on for a while - very distressing to listen to her.
Not knowing much about hawks (and what level of intelligence they have), I was in doubt about the reason for her upset - did she realise the chick was dead, or was it because it had been dragged out of the bowl? The fact that she later went hunting and came back with a prey, which she left by the egg cup, made me suspect she did not immediately realise the chick was dead (also because of what Tom did - I will get to it shortly).
She left the nest and Tom took over. After some hesitation, he picked the dead chick by the wing, placed it in the egg cup and brooded it with the unhatched egg. Had instinct suddenly kicked in? Had Angel's cries made him realise that the little thing belonged to the egg cup?
He was still brooding two hours later, when Angel returned with food.
*** Editing to add: I now know that, while Angel vocalised, Tom was perched on a branch of the nest tree, so he could hear Angel very well (I have just checked the footage from the long range camera).
Not included in the video: Angel removed the chick from the nest in the early afternoon, and a little later Tom brought an opossum, which Angel consumed elsewhere.
There's a glimmer of hope as some pipping is seen on the remaining egg.
We must accept what happened and remember that Tom is a young and inexperienced hawk.
The brief section (just over a minute) showing the live chick (I have cropped the screen to enlarge the images), is accompanied by soft instrumental music - turn the volume off if not appreciated (the live stream was virtually silent, during that time).
For those who don't know the live stream and have not watched my previous videos, the male has only just become an adult (3 years of age). He was with Angel last year, but there were no chicks as he was too young to reproduce.
For more information, read the description below the live stream, provided by Window to Wildlife (the same society who features the ospreys and the eagles at Captiva Island, Florida.
The names for the hawks are assigned by the landowner's grandson - for instance, Tom is short for Tomahawk :)

I agree, Luceforall! I don't think that Tom knew what he was looking at. In all of what happened, the amazing part is that when he felt the "thing" in the nest had to be dealt with, he did so without damaging the other egg. That convinces me that he put two and two together and got 5. The protectiveness of his actions was lost in the tragedy. Had he attacked any other "thing" in the nest, that was a real threat, without breaking the egg, he would have been the "talk of the town"! Thank you for the video! Be blessed! 🙏 🤗🦅💕

Yes, Tom was very cautious in his movements and I have nothing to compare this event with. All we can do is wait and see how he behaves with the second hatchling. I was thinking that, if things go wrong again, then he has not matured enough and we have to wait another season. Have a very peaceful Sunday!

A Very sad outcome indeed. This is such a beautiful pair and was hoping Tom would know what to do...perhaps the second chick has a chance now that Tom experienced this and Angel's reactions...will pray for them

I've been very excited about Angel's eggs giving birth to tiny hatchings. The baby surpassed my enthusiastic expectations of its adorability! I didn't know 3y.o. hawks could successfully mate, but like many of us, my familiarity with birds is primarily with eagles. This is heartbreaking. I appreciate your posting pics of the precious hatchling, Luceforall. I'm shocked by the circumstances of the hatchling's death, and heartbroken that it's gone. Poor Angel. I couldn't bear to listen to her subsequent vocalizations.😣 My condolences to everyone who cares deeply, dearly about birds and others; this would be unbearable without our "clan." Thank you for the sensitivity of your post, Luce💔❤

Thank you, Mel! I too am at my first experience with this species, so I can't contribute much in terms of behaviour, age etc. It was a bit of a shock and I had a big lump in my throat. Angel's cries went on for a lot longer, but I cut some of the footage short. Tom was very close at the time, just off camera, so he heard it all. The only consolation is that birds recover quickly. Keeping my eyes on the nest, today.

@@seanlee7563 You know, looking back, I have a feeling she did not immediately understand the chick was dead, but obviously distressed at finding it outside the egg cup. After she left, Tom dragged the chick back into the bowl and brooded it, so he must have got her message. When she returned, she too brooded the chick for a while, before taking it away from the nest. This is just my interpretation of the events, of course.

When you see those wing flips, he is "footing". That is striking, like a punch, but with 4 sharp talons. This is how RT hawks kill their prey. He must have been confused, and thought it was some kind of intruder into the nest.

How sad! An inexperienced male made a heartbreaking move. Let's hope he came to understand what he did. I don't think he really understands what he did if you compare his reaction to that of Angel. Thanks Luce for such a well explained intro.😊🍁

Hi, I'm another eagle watcher joining in at this nest. I think it was you, @Luceforall, who commented that by pulling the little one back into the nest cup and brooding it along with the egg, he showed that he realized it was his and knew what he should have done. I agree and have high hopes that he'll do better when egg 2 hatches.

@Luceforall Год назад
Hi, Andi! I seem to recall your name in eagle chat rooms - possibly the West End? Yes, it was me who made that comment, but I am seeing it through human eyes. I wish I knew what Angel's vocals signified - he was very close, just off camera, and heard it all! Today I shall keep checking the live stream.

Andi--another Eagle Watcher here. I agree with you and Luce. Tom came back when Angel left(after she saw the Still Chick) and he Poked it's wings and body to see if it was alive. At that point he realizes, IT'S what came out of the egg and drags it back into nest cup near the Egg, restarts Brooding it Including Incubating the Remaining Egg. For the Future, my belief is--he realizes he has destroyed their chick But is unlikely to do That again. When Angel left (As Luce Notes), she ,perhaps, still felt Chick was alive and food would help, maybe not suspecting Tom dispached Their Chick -- but it's clear he did as the chick stood up in nest after hatching ( after Angel left on a break, first time), a seemingly healthy newborn chick. Some terrible things can happen in God's Natural World(Nature) and in our World , that we cannot understand , except to move on with Life.

@@user-qy7dl9hd7f I had high hopes too but I’m sure you saw by now he started kicking the 2nd hatchling amid other strange behaviors and lifted the chick off the nest and dropped. At that point Angel flew back in. Mannnnnnnn….I shutter to think what he might have done had she not come back again. I feel for him. You can feel his confusion from a million miles away 😢 Tom also didn’t bring any other prey all day. Unless I missed it, both mama and baby had nothing to eat. She left for quite some time to hunt I suppose and came back with nothing. I hope for the best tomorrow cause they’ll need food.

@@gregthegroove The pressure is on Tom to deliver enough for his family--If Angel has to Forage for food for her Chick and her, odds go down greatly for survival. We really don't now if it's Angel or Tom or a bad Prey Pop. year. At this point, i don't believe Tom would attack his Chick after seeing Mom feed it. Still, i was Shocked at how little he (Inately) knew about Recog. and wanting to help raise a Chick. We are all watching to see ? Big Q is on Food Supply--not so much on T or A ability to find it to survive. If there is enough, everyone will Survive. In England barn owls in particular have this food survival problem.

Hi! I am pretty sure I have come across your name in eagle chat rooms! I was shocked too and I am also new to hawks. The simplest explanation is that he had no idea it was the 'thing' that came out of the egg - it was rather unfortunate that experienced Angel was not there. I don't know how varied their level of communication is - maybe she was able to convey her distress to him! Yes, let's hope Tom has learned a lesson and, above all, that Angel is present when he first meets the next chick!

Who knows what happened? Perhaps have multiple cameras about the nest could have shown us. The chick starved to death since it was not fed since coming into the world. Thinking that the male did not recognize it as its offspring is a stretch-but that is what we are viewing birds with birdbrains. Instinctively he would know it was his chick.
@Luceforall
@Luceforall Год назад
Hi! If we can exclude anything from the 'list of suspects', that is starvation. The chick would have not been so perky and it would have still had the nutrients absorbed from the yolk sack - when they hatch, they are alright without food for a couple of days or so - this chick was only 12 hours old. I agree with you about instinct - maybe Tom has not developed in full his parental instinct - we'll see what happens with the second hatchling!
@southerngal4655
@southerngal4655 Год назад
@@Luceforall this is just a thought and I am no expert at all. I guess we're all trying to search for a reason why. Could Tom have sensed that something was physically wrong with the chick and euthanized it as some birds do. Very sad. 💔
@Luceforall
@Luceforall Год назад
@@southerngal4655 I never thought of that - who knows? The chick seemed healthy enough to me, but I am no expert either. I watched a bit on rewind today - Tom briefly visited the nest but did not interact with the chick at all (no food was brought in either, today up to 5 pm nest time). Either he has not matured sufficiently, or he is a bit dysfunctional! However, worth watching how he reacts on the video I have just published!
