Angelica Catalani (Italy, 1780 - 1849)
Angelica Catalani’s artistry represents the musical Zeitgeist of her time; her vocal pyrotechnics and improvisational skill were legendary. Billed as “The best singer in the world” and the prototype for the character of Tosca -- thanks her high-handed behavior - she was the most highly paid and famous singer of her time. As a child, she had been placed in a convent by her impoverished parents, but was released by Papal decree because of her astonishing voice. She managed the Theatre-Italien in Paris for a time and was immortalized by the artist Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun. Catalani was also celebrated for her charity and for founding a school of singing for girls.
