Hi all I just want to thank you for all your comments. I understand a lot of you are a little upset with my take on this version of Jay Hawkins. I put a spell on you… and yes, I have heard the original many many times. I just want to be clear I’m not saying she was awful. I’m just saying that I didn’t really like her growling. Which is funny because someone did mention in the comments that she no longer does this because it was ruining her voice; which is understandable. Regardless, I just uploaded a bunch of other covers that she’s done and I was completely mesmerized by her. So again, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and this is mine. I've actually seen a similar reaction in person, to yours here- in that case, he simply couldn't watch beyond the initial GROWL. For some, I think the sheer singular power and confidence within the body of a child is uncomfortable, particularly coupled with the adult nature of the song.
I am absolutely fine with your reaction :) Just to say that I think she had advice that she shouldn't growl in case it damaged her voice (not because any such damage was already evident ) .... and I haven't seen any video where she did that again - she sang this song pleny of times more, but without the growl... I have a friend who did a degree in music, specialising in the human voice, and she expressed concern after hearing Angelina's "I'd rather go blind", which she sang with heavy jazzy rasp... I don't know if she was right to be worried about that. What we do know is that, at 17, her voice in in great shape ! :)
I'm gonna leave this one alone. I don't understand how anybody could not be impressed by this. The few exceptions were by amatures who had little understanding of Jazz or Jazz history. But you've seen Jay Hawkins originals and were still not impressed. I can respect that. I don't understand it. But I will respect it. I'd guess 95% of reactors I have seen were positively blown away, mindblown, speechless... Ok. Don't stop reacting. I am confident you will find more to appreciate than not. Thank you. ♥👣🔥
Totally agree ! You're too kind ! This performance was a masterpiece of great jazz singing by Angelina ! It's the reason most of her angels started to follow this child prodigy ! I'm still blown away by this rendition every time ! 👍👍

I Injoy your Reactions once again Ashlena. May be a year after this Angelina had a Concert I think 12 or 13 songs in Korea Festival. One of them was I put a spell on you. Which I liked. Norah Jones I think later that day asked Angelina to open Norahs concert. She did this with, I Put a spell on you. In front of a crowd of 40,000 people. You will be happy to hear she did this without the growl. When She trotted out on the stage with her bare feet. She said they asked me to sing another song for you. The croud yelled back with happiness.
I'm not impressed by your lack of understanding of vocal maturity! But you are entitled to your opinion and that's okay ! Angelina at 9 is displaying unbelievable singing techniques with her vocal fry, growls, squeeks , screams ,vibrato added in to give what is required for this jazz song ! Her inflections and nuances are delivered flawlessly with such passionate emotions it's uncanny ! This is a difficult song to sing and her raw and organic sound was fabulous ! Mature beyond her years ! The studio musicians were as tight and top notch as it gets ! I'm assuming you're not a singer ! Keep posting it's much appreciated but I think you got this one wrong ! 👍
I actually have been vocally trained up until high school. So I’m aware that at her age it’s a very difficult song to sing. Again I never said I didn’t like it I just found her other covers to be more fitting to her voice. I still prefer jays original version. I never said she wasn’t talented.
You're vocally trained yet had no pertinent recognition of the advanced techniques? Let's hear your rendition of it and see how it compares. As many reactors have stated, this didn't just fill Screamin' Jay's shoes, these are the new shoes.
Thank you for featuring Angelina again, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RU-vid, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
Ashlena Just one more time. As you saw at the beginning, Angelina wrote something else on a piece of paper and a band member read it. Those were instructions for the band on how they wanted it played. She was always dubbed "Boss" by every band. So it's her own arrangement. She wanted it that way and that's all!

All of the segments were recorded as she sang the song. As with all studio performances, except for those designated as live, they are made up of many takes. Another problem is that your stream, our stream, everyone's streams can lag. For this reason, RU-vid provides an offset timer. You may go weeks or months without a problem, but the problem is never totally absent. This cover was made of the "original" artist, Screamin Jay Hawkins, singing it in 1956. Based on your comments, you clearly haven't seen the it performed as Jay intended. Jay's performance is entirely outrageous. Angelina arranged her lyrics to pay homage to Jay, not Simone, Lennox, Townshend, or any of the 120+ significant artist performances of it. As for telling a 9 year and 2 month old girl that she's overdone her performance, your entirely unfair. That is unless you think Hawkins' rendition was a gentle ballad. Rather than complement what this little one has accomplished, you've made an unfair assessment. Watch Jay, rewatch AJ, and ponder what this single digit midget has accomplished.
Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. Amazing performance . I was 13 when Screaming Jay Hawkins , who wrote this song , performed it live on TV. Its a must see to really appreciate what this child did .
On the one hand, I like the fact that you didn’t focus on her age (as many reactors do), and gave your opinion as if she were a mature adult and not a 9-year-old child. On the other hand, you gave her little credit for her arrangement and performance being the truest to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ original (found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-orNpH6iyokI.html). If you thought this performance was “overdone,” you must truly hate Screamin’ Jay’s original!
Thank you! I like to react to voices I don’t really care how old she is. But again it’s impressive that she’s only 9 it’s insane. But yes I give her credit for singing it like Jay but jay is legendary… she will be too but I prefer his original.

However, it's hard to deny that Angelina's performance was more musical (SJH simply screams; AJ growls & screams on pitch and in key!). AJ also has a better, more natural vibrato. And I absolutely prefer AJ's to any other cover. It's a remarkable tribute to the original that few others (at any age) could perform as well. Of course, as you may have guessed, I prefer AJ's cover to SJH's original, primarily for its superior musicality and vocal technique.
@@McDevittMike While you're right that most people haven't seen the original (and, I would bet, no other 9 year old), Ashlena claims to be familiar with it (I also provided a link in my first post). My comments are intended to point out that, legendary or not, SJH's version is simply, and objectively, not musically as good as Angelina's (which is both a cover and a tribute to him). But tastes differ, and SJH's IS more theatrical (if that's your thing).
You are going to be swamped with angel requests for Angelina Jordan. The Empress of Jazz is going to knock your socks off. Just dive in and also know her very wide fan base is staunchly loyal. There are many versions of this song. What Angelina did was the original version by Screaming Jay Hawkins ... the man pictured on the coffee mug at the start of the video.
Angelina is paying tribute to the original artist Screaming J Hawkins a blues musician from the 1950s , she is commanding the performance and arranges this version herself as at 9 years old, many vocal coaches musical teachers are amazed by this performance and mentioned Angelina is a prodigy and musical genius, and they understand Angelina’s phenomenal talent, thanks 🙏

That is who Angelina is paying homage to. It will make more sense after listening to that. Not many people notice that at the beginning of her video she is holding a candle with his image in respect. She keeps close to the originals and adds her own magic to it.

Haha I totally respect her singing it true to the original but jay will always be the best at this song. She did a great job but it just wasn’t my favourite that I’ve heard from her. If you thought this was slightly over the top you should see screaming Jay Hawkins version the original and the best performance. I think angelina here is extend her voice in all kinds of different ways. I would say beyond what she could do that the time.
I figured there had to be a person somewhere who was not blown away by this performance, that has come to pass. I appreciate the honesty. The lag is likely a function of something other than the video itself, since I have watched it dozens of times and never experienced it. And the growling and shout-singing was necessary to do an appropriate tribute to the Jay Hawkins original which was far wilder.

Totally respect your opinion, but as someone else alluded to, the over-the-top nature was intentional in my opinion. She wanted to approach J's version by doing an "in the style of" while making it her own. Pretty courageous for a 9 y.o. Looking forward to more of your reactions!
Kind of surprised you did not appreciate the amazingness of this performance. If you thought it was over done you haven't seen the original. She respected the original artist. You also failed to appreciate the difficulty of the many techniques and quirks she did that much older professional could not even come close to duplicating. i believe if you watch it a few times you will slowly come to realize her Geniusness in this performance.

I for one wasn't fond of the song "Mount Everest"; I'm sure Angelina did the song justice, but that song just isn't for me. It's all good. Don't worry, she sings like in 20 different styles, I'm sure there will be one or the other performance which you'll like. This "growling thing" was a one-off in honor of the original, "screaming" J. Hawkins, but she usually doesn't growl, thank God, it would damage her vocals if that was her thing! I totally get the ode to Jay but again, as I’ve said, in many comments, I feel like nothing can top the original, hence why I didn’t really like it, but I still think it was very impressive. I just reacted to a couple of her other covers and they were phenomenal.
I have not heard another cover of this SJH song that tops this, may not be as good as the original in your opinion but I think she out shined any other version I have heard and think Screaming J would have loved it…I appreciate your take but other than screaming J himself have you heard a better rendition? She kept the spirit of the original song...Pity you don't know the original ..This rendition was totally appropriate. Sorry that you don't see the genius of this piece of art, who will stay for sure, in the great History Book of Music.
Totally understand you found the growling excessive but to understand her arrangement you'd have to understand what Angelina was working from. I had heard and still prefer Nina Simone's interpretation but Angelina probably only had Screamin' Jay Hawkins as a reference point. What she came up with is a version containing nearly all the original's elements but delivered in actually a calmer, more measured way. Hawkins was, by his own admission, drunk when he came up his infamous filmed rendition. Angelina evidently enjoyed what she saw and decided to rearrange elements and rein back the histrionics. She has explained what she felt the song was about. Unfortunately I can't find the quote but, based on how she interpreted it, the way she delivered her version made sense to me. The video is basically a live recording with insert edits of other takes included to give the impression of multiple camera angles. This is all fairly standard practice. Angelina's job is to sing it the same way two or maybe three or four times while filmed from different angles. The editor's job is to sync up video from takes two to four to the audio track from take 1 (or the studio audio in most other cases). The better Angelina does her bit, the more options she is giving the editor. Any apparent delays are contingent on how good a job the editor does.
I appreciate your honesty. Everyone has their favorites and we need to respect each other's choice. Angelina certainly has her own opinion for how to sing any given song and she chose to be very much over the top, for this cover, as a proper tribute to the original. This performance is certainly an outlier for Angelina and many of us angels say she was in beast mode. I think you would agree, this performance was remarkable coming from someone near their 9th birthday and it would have been proper to state that point.
I think she recorded the song live (with the band) but the video (or a part of it at least) has been recorded and produced afterwards. There are also two different positions where Angelina stands in the video so it's obvious that there has been some post production in the video. The music has been mixed in the studio but Angelina's singing is real and there is no any Autotune or similar tools used. There are industry professional who have listened to this and they say it can be noticed if some manipulative tools had been used and there is nothing like that here. The instrument sound levels have been a little bit mixed I think because it could be technically very difficult to record the whole band live with many microphones and not to do any production at all. This is a kind of music video but still a kind of live performance. Not like any normal extremely produced studio track. There is no doubt Angelina (or the whole band) could put out this kind of performance live based on the real live performances I have heard from her from when she was about 8-10 years old.

This is 100% Angelina's masterpiece (you see her at the beginning giving last instructions to the director). Then of course, you may not like the theatrical style used by Angelina faithful to the original (he shows the photo in the author's cup at the beginning), obtaining one of the best performances ever in that style. Style that I call a 'beast', which she never did again so as not to damage the vocal cords.
I wish every comment was this comment. I totally understand her ode to Jay but I’ll always see. I put a spell on you as Jay’s song and no one else’s. That doesn’t mean people aren’t allowed to cover it. I just prefer the original, and the growling makes sense that she would hurt her vocal cords because it didn’t sound very natural coming from her but again she did a great job.
After listening to a 9-year-old child, whom in a previous reaction you said was displaying a lack of confidence, perform a song 3 years earlier with absolute utter confidence, you seem to have miss the boat completely. Probably a lot of the other commenters have let you know that this song was originally done by its writer, screaming j Hawkins, in the late '50s. Angelina, being an absolute astute follower of classic jazz singers, from the time she was four or five years old. She has taken an interpretation from his original recording of the song, and paid homage to his original arrangement. I am sorry that you are so unimpressed by what thousands of people have been impressed by, and recognizing at 9 years old her vocal ability, her timing, her absolute voice control, her absolute pitch control, and her brilliant interpretation of the song, and I repeat at 9 years old. I am confused because it seems that you are resistant to giving this young brilliant singer her just due. Of course each of us have our own individual taste in music, but in this case yours seem to be so different from a multitude of others who have either reacted to, and listened to this girl's magnificent interpretation of this song, and be absolutely blown away by her ability. So sad that you are one of the few who are so unimpressed.
It must have been at least two takes on this one since she starts and ends in the recording booth, but have a middle section standing on a scene with the orchestra =)

Angelina is usually subtle about the vocal techniques she employs to interpret a song. This is the one where she wasn't with all the growling and such but in my mind she was right and this song required such treatment. There is a live performance of this song a couple years later with the growls removed and it is a bit more sassy. It has been claimed that she was advised to not use the growls to protect her voice although I've never heard this confirmed. If you are not impressed by the growls you will certainly prefer that performance.

Don't really understand, but I guess we all have our opinions . Have never heard that one before however. Absolutely one take just pieced together so she could front the band.
Not one take. Sometimes she’s wearing headphones, sometimes not. Sometimes in a booth, sometimes the band is all together in one room. At least two takes. Probably more, but I don’t know. Doesn’t matter, it’s a masterpiece!
If you think this was too much, you may check original done by Screaming Jay Hopkins then you would think that Angelina's version is tame. For me is very surprising that 9 year old girl would make something good out of the Screaming version which for me is no good at all
You'll notice she is at different mics and shot at different angles. There's a good chance the audio was one take, no chance the video was. So sync may a a little off. But of the hundred or so reactors I've watched reviewing this song, you're the only one who says they hear a lag. Just saying. By the way, might be a good idea for you to watch one the Screamin'Jay Hawkins versions just to understand the original material. Won't make you like it, but may provide insight into why she performed the song that way.

I dont know if you have ever heard the Screaming Jay Hawkins version, but it is full of unsual sound , screams, growls, etc. This was a tribute to the original Artist, therefor having a very unique flavor, (if you will). It is actually a stunning tribute, and the closest thing you will ever hear to the original. Maybe if you listened to that version, you could better appreciate what she has done . That's a understandable comment from someone who likes AURORA and you show your lack of knowledge about Angelina , who shouldn't be pigeon holed as solely as a jazz singer , far from it . she has coverd over 80 artists and performed most genre , extremely versatile artist most of her performances on RU-vid are nowhere near a jazz genre .

That comment has just stopped me from subscribing. I don't know what you were looking at, i have watched hundreds of reactors reacting to this and you are the first to see something that obviously is'nt there. If there's a lag in the sound then it's YOUR equipment that's causing it.

Goeie hemel. Over done! Watch the original and realize a 9 yo kid did the arrangement herself. If you listen to jazz voice coaches, that are also jazz singers , what their take on this performance was, one understand what brilliant performance this was.
I'm surprised, took me a bit. Probably after the second or third time it got better every time. But I'm a novice in this kind of music. Certainly was, wasn't for me anyway. But yeah IIRC I turned it off, bit overwhelmed and spooked and went to find stuff more similar to what I was falling for. But I never would have not been impressed, or not liked it as much as it was something to come back to later when I'm expecting it and not actively looking for something of a different style. You had me worried you were going to or even already had caught some scorn, I'm so shocked you didn't love it. Try it again one day. As odd as it is to say I would have sooner believed you were annoyed with us angels, or like me the first time, not properly available to it. Anything but genuinely not being into it 😋 was my rationalization. Sorry.
As far as takes go, video is at least two. Audio is probably 1-10 😋 I'd guess 5. She is that one taker for sure, incredible live singer. But this is very very incredible for a 9 year old, even her. A lot of perfection and power. What kills us is she doesn't need perfection or power to kill us. I think though, that this performance is way too good. Perfection and power live seems more like 12 year old Angelina and up, to this extent anyway in this song. But unfortunately really hard to say, neither growling nor power is something she leans on often to this day. I'd compare it to 'loving you' or 'it's a man's world' at 11 and 12 live if anything. But this is much cleaner, different feel, studio audio instead of fan shot too. I'm truly sold on Angelina, but could she one take this at 9? I don't think so. She was still doing some interesting techniques, her whole voice is 'unlocked' now, but back then to sound mature she was finding ways. She never seemed to so much go for the clean perfection we hear here either, don't think I for sure heard that until Bohemian Rhapsody live. So yeah I guess 5 takes or so myself.

Honestly if you can't see what is remarkable about this performance, offer no objective reason other than I did not like it, that is OK. My recommendation would be not to do any more of her videos because you can't professionally critique what you liked or not. That is my objective opinion of your reaction. I will move on now.
Thanks but I’ll keep reacting to what I want. I’ve just reacted to more of her and I throughly enjoyed it. Just because I didn’t like one cover of a song she doesn’t mean I don’t like her.
Respectfully, many of us consume content and expected a reaction. No emotional reaction or technical reaction except "I don't like it. Not for me." This is fair. My RECOMMENDATION was based on your no real reaction that maybe doing a reaction video is not what you should be doing. Go back and view it again and ask yourselves. Was this a good reaction video? Is this even much of a reaction video? You can say AJ's video was not your thing and not say why. I as a consumer say I got nothing from a non or limited reaction and that's why I did not like the creator's video. By contrast, I can say several things regarding what I like or not about the AJ video. It's a free platform. You can cover what and how you want. You can make a non reaction video. I can say I did not enjoy the content because it lacked substance. Agree to disagree. Most consumers who have watched reaction videos for 5-10 so years know what I'm talking about. With all do respect, if you can't see what I'm trying to convey as truly helpful advice from a viewer and fan perspective, then continue on. I don't know what your experience is with 9-year-olds but this performance was done by a 9-year-old singing and the arrangement including the music. Out of at least 1000 probably double that if not more reactors I have viewed about this video have thought this was a fantastic performance it just goes to show no matter what is done someone will not like it and with that said I won't bother you again and no subscription or like sorry I watched.

All the reactors that had this kind of indifference to Angelina singing, I put a spell on you have one thing in common. You literally could have simply shifted 1° toward a minute acknowledgment in her direction for the effort at 9yrs old. Others have said so whilst being overly respectful. Stuff that!. You claim you heard the original many many times created 1n 1956 by Screamin' Jay Hawkins who you said will always be the best at this song. There have been many covers of this song and most are much better than the subpar original including nine year old Angelina's masterpiece. Your lack of understanding of vocal talent is astonishing.

See, there are people who think the same way I do. I agree that it’s an unusual piece. It doesn’t fit with all the other covers that I’ve seen. Plus, it’s really hard to imitate Jay’s but I gave her kudos for trying.

I like AJ. but i don't put her on a plinth. She is amazing, yes. But i totally agree with you. She overdid it. To many effects to much growling. It is still impressive. I love your honesty.
