Her first original was WHAT IS LIFE? and I am not sure what age she was when she wrote it. What I believe is harder is what she did from the very start .. which is that she has rearranged most of her covers. In this one, she wrote and arranged what each musician was doing. Huge, no? The band musicians called her "boss" .. with love though, because she is super humble and not in any way rude or pushy. They loved their "boss" and were very protective of her as well as blown away. I sometimes think that all musicians that played with her this young knew they were part of making history by playing with this brilliant child. Amazing. What you called a whistle tone was actually an inhaled "scream" when you re-watch, look closely, you'llseeit. How impressive is it that a nine year old can shape her vocal tract to create a tone that matches the song on an inhale "scream"!

You've just heard and watched the greatest performance by a young miracle artist that never won a grammy. FYI, she sang this same arrangement a couple of times later, like around 10/11ish, but never reproduced that inhale whistle.

All sax-players ARE singers. YES. In this song's final sax/horn break, saxes are ALWAYS FOREVER the Tone Masters in any arrangement - but not in THIS song. Her vocals overlay the horns and are 100% in control of the tone. I listen to an ordinarily expressive sax being FLATTENED - STEAMROLLED - by this singer's whoooa-ooohs because she's got The Tone Control. This is such an amazingly great arrangement decision, too, to let the horns 'reduce themselves to mere background' while her vocals express Full Character. I love hearing from a sax player on THIS one song above all else.

If you listen to Screamin J Hawkins live version you see him going primal like he's possessed. Angie emulates all of it in the way a 9yr old could. She doesn't sound like Screamin J, not even close. So in the end she reels in crazy Screamin J and puts more of a form to it.

As a fellow sax player (and in my case, clarinets too), I've accompanied numerous vocalists (mostly in choirs, pit orchestras, and jazz bands). Yet I've never performed with anyone that compares to Angelina. She is SO instinctively good: technically capable, musically intelligent, with a remarkable, unique voice (even at this age). I have to agree with all your comments, especially thoughts like "she's next level" and "she's better than many professionals -- even at this young age." I'm glad you found her, and hope you react to many more of her 200 or so videos on YT (which includes several original songs).

Romeo, sir, here is the story about this video, as I could gather from different sources: AJ was 9 years and 2 months. Her parents rented this studio and band for her. In Scandinavia she already was a superstar, but not yet well known. It seems her dad, did the renting as he has another name (Gerry Slattman). AJ came in shooke hands with everybody. I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable!... Oh Lord... what is coming the world is not prepared for but we as fans have been on the edge of our seats and will remain there as we wait. No hurry. We want Angelina to do it her way when she is ready. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... I hope to go out of this world listening to the most beautiful voice ever created for man just as Angelina came into it to fulfill her purpose, what she was put on earth to do, sing for the whole World... and Me! Love you reaction my friend...Did you know that it's her own arrangement. Morissette yes but on a rather more conventional way. Wondering around AJ's world , you will see that her versality is like none other. Wrote at 11 3 songs "What is life" "Oslo" " Shied" and lately "7th Heaven" and " Million Miles" in memory of her granddad" .Morissette is a great singer but IMO AJ is a true genius.

It's not a whistle tone. She does it by drawing in air across the vocal chords. I've done it but it hurts like hell. A vocal coach would tell her to not do it, and I don't think she has since, because it can damage your voice.

Yes this is amazing. Angelina inhaled that high first whistle note and it was spectacular! The whole performance is epic: she and the band are on fire. Let people only listen to the audio and ask them to tell as much as they can about the singer. I don’t they will end up at a nine year, singing barefoot and keep abreast of a full band. She also worked on the arrangement: the paper she hands over at the beginning were some last minute changes she came up with. She called it her list of wishes and of course they were granted. It was inspired on the version of Screaming Jay Hawkins (the guy on the candle). She performs barefoot for a beautiful reason. When she was 6 she met a girl in the streets in the Middle-east without shoes and scarred feet. Angelina gave the girl her shoes and since she performs barefoot in remembrance of that girl and to raise awareness of poor kids all over the world.
