At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on RU-vid went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. I think if you view the performance as a whole and that she sold all out to express this version of the song. I mean what 9 year old who arranged the song in the first place, that in it self stands alone in skill level. That wasn't the whole thing she invested not just emotionally, but physically as well. A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. The part of this performance you noted as sounding a little bit on the childish side is actually a nod from Angelina to the wild iconic original by Screamin Jay Hawkins. Hawkins does a demonic laugh with four staccato sounds, and Angelina changes that up a bit with her hey-hey-hey-hey, also with a rising staccato intonation. Angelina actually tames down the Hawkins version of this song, melding perfectly with that great band behind her. Angelina is nine here and this is her own arrangement, giving me one of my two or three favorite music videos of all time.

Hey H, if you listen again, you'll find that the Janis Joplin "scream," as you described it, is actually done on the inhale. Much more impressive than a "regular" scream. This means she can shape her throat to make make the desired note inhaling.

This is such an incredible performance. Not just for a 9 year old: many 19 or 29 olds would be proud to be able to do this :-) Angelina is an amazing artist! She, 17 now, released an EP during the summer called ‘Old Enough’: her family wanted her to have a normal childhood first so perhaps that’s what the title is referring to :-) Just a few weeks ago she released another single called ‘Our Time’. All of it is uniquely her with a lot of sass and positive vibes and energy. I’m sure you will enjoy those as well for your own private listening pleasure or to react to.

It's ironic that you'd point to the "Hey-hey-hey-HEY; watch out!" as the part that sounds the most childlike, since it's the only part that's a direct homage to a performance by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the composer of the song. I see what you mean in terms of her timbre, but I don't think she had any intention to sound like an adult. It's just the techniques she uses that fool our ears into thinking at times that it's an adult singing. Nice reaction, H!

Thank you for featuring Angelina a second time, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RU-vid, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Very nice reaction and appreciation of this very special young lady who wants to sing for the world, but with love and kindness as her rock from which to launch her career. There is something in the water over there in Norway that produces beautiful children with beautiful voices, who love to sing.

You should go to the original 1956 screaming Jay Hawkins video and you will see what AJ was doing and arranging her version (at 9 years old no less) this will interduce you to her way of thinking and her way of recreating a cover,, she does this on most of her covers making them her own while she gives tribute to the original singer... you will see it in AGT 2020 (age 13) Bohemian Raposidy and Yellow Brick Road, then again at age 16 when she recreated Elvis suspisous minds when she made a music video tribute!
